Title: MADE on MTV with Peter Putnam
Post by: Laura Lee on November 01, 2008, 01:40:54 PM
Peter "PUMP" Putnam is trying to get a kid ready for a contest on Venice Beach ... in 8 weeks.  This kid is such a whiner "I have to think about bbing every minute of every day".  Waa waa waa.

Cody just said it's bullshit, lol, and just walked out of the gym.  Tells Putnam "I want you to kiss my ass".

Time to get waxed.  ;D

Anybody else watching?

I think this particular show would have been better with as a two parter and had Cody training/dieting for 16-20 weeks or longer.  It would have been nice to see him really make a noticable transformation and decide if he really wants/is commited to such a lifestyle.

hey what makes you a special guest, not being a dick just asking.
There used to be a board here where you needed Pro, industry person or special guest designation to view.....kinda like only people w/access to the time-out accounts can view the time-out board.  I think you were determined to be a special guest if a pro or industry person asked Ron to make you one or Ron knew you supported fitness, figure and/or bodybuilding by actually going to shows.

I thought it was funny that he trained and semi-dieted for one week then went on vacation and expected to be able to eat what ever and do what ever because he was on vacation (again...he had only 8 weeks before a show).  But I am glad that he got to somewhat understand that it isn't all that easy to decide to be a bber.  I went on to the MTV site to see if he continued...but they had nothing on him.

And yes, Ava looked great, she always does though.

Seemed a kid like that would have went along better if Peter had been more positive toward him.  I agree with you Laura on Peter making fun of the kid, not very classy.  Maybe that's what MTV wanted though, a tough guy coach.

I think MTV loves to promote drama (as do most reality shows) because those watching it love the drama, but if you really want to help someone...no matter what it is they are aspiring to be "made" into...you don't make fun of them and as they say "you get more with honey than you do from vinegar".  I believe you need to be tough, but you also need to offer praise and give possitive support.  I think if someone thinks they are doing well, they find it more fun and offer more and work harder.  If they think they are doing bad and are teased...they are going to give up or become difficult, as shown in most of MADE shows.  I can understand that the coaches get frustrated but they also have to realize that these kids have no idea what goes into becoming what they are asking to be and there is usually not enough time to do so (6-8 weeks is the amount of time they have to become what they want) and unfortunately they don't usually continuing with what they were MADE into.  :-\

Newspaper article on the show
Dalton native pumped about MTV reality show
Jamie Jones

You can’t turn a teenager into a bodybuilder in eight weeks. Especially a teenager whose diet consists of greasy Southern fried food. Definitely a teenager who has never picked up a weight.

You can, as Dalton native and bodybuilder Peter Putnam learned, give that teenager a glimpse of a bodybuilder’s lifestyle and show him the motivation needed to succeed in the sport — and in life.

Putnam will appear on MTV’s reality program “Made” on Saturday at 4 p.m. as a coach who has two months to prepare teenager Cody Hammon for a bodybuilding contest at “Muscle Beach” in Venice Beach, Calif. While new to bodybuilding, Hammon wants to improve his self-image and confidence level and become physically tougher.

“It was not necessarily transforming his body into a bodybuilder because that was not remotely a possibility,” said Putnam, a 1995 graduate of Dalton High School. “However, his success would be defined by him being able to complete the challenges, not quit, actually make it to the competition and be able to go out and have confidence in himself.”

“Made” takes ordinary people who aspire to be extraordinary with the help of a “coach.” A prissy teenage girl wants to be a BMX racer. An overweight high school student wants to be a tri-athlete. An introvert wants to be a professional wrestler.

The project started with a call to Putnam from MTV producers — who admitted knowing little about bodybuilding — to pick his brain. After several phone calls and interviews, casting directors asked Putnam to try out for the show as the coach. They thought Putnam, who has appeared on the covers of several bodybuilding magazines, including Flex and Muscle and Fitness, would lend credibility to the program.

Putnam has been a bodybuilder for several years. His athletic background reaches much further as a member of the Dalton High School football team in the early 1990s. In 2007, he won the light heavyweight class at the USA Bodybuilding Championship in Las Vegas, the same city where he and wife Jessica were married.

It also helped that Putnam lives in Knoxville, Tenn., which would allow him to make the filming schedule. The majority of the show was filmed in Jackson in west Tennessee with additional shooting in Daytona, Fla., Huntsville, Ala., and Venice Beach.

Filming began in July. Hammon received a package in the mail with a pair of Speedos and a note from Putnam. He was to go to an empty theater and sit in the front row. The lights dimmed, the spotlight hit, the music began and the curtains opened to reveal Putnam posing.

“The whole journey begins,” Putnam said.

Putnam called the experience “an accelerated course in Bodybuilding 101.” He had to teach Hammon to eat meals of lean protein and healthy carbohydrates every two to three hours. He had to show Hammon proper weightlifting techniques. He had to inspire his protégé through hours upon hours of cardiovascular work.

“It blindsided him,” Putnam said. “He had no idea this was a part of a bodybuilder’s lifestyle.”

Hammon put up a fight and was at times reluctant to embrace the daily grind. He wanted to live a normal life, but at the same time aspired to be a bodybuilder.

“It was taking a blank canvas,” Putnam said. “You can’t give a kid a crayon and tell him to draw a Picasso. The issue is if they don’t even want to hold the crayon, you’re not going to get anything out of them. That’s kind of where it was, a constant battle and struggle; he was being subjected to often intense, grueling situations.”

Hammon may have lacked a chiseled physique at the end of the eight weeks, but he did lose 20 pounds.

Not to give away the entire episode, but Hammon makes it to the bodybuilding competition. He also gets to tour the offices of Joe Weider, who co-founded the International Federation of BodyBuilders (IFBB) and created the Mr. Olympia competition. Weider also publishes Flex and Muscle and Fitness magazines.

That was a plus since Hammon is considering a career in journalism — just in case his bodybuilding career falls through.

I missed parts of it but MTV always finds these effeminate chubsters who want to to do the seemingly impossible. They had a low test chubster on last year that wanted to be a Triathalete  ::)
The dark haired broad wanted him to practice posing on the beach which was very cunty of her! Top competitors don't pose on the beach, why the fuck would she ask that of a guy who's only been working out for 5 weeks?  >:(
The funniest thing wasn't the wimpy kid, it was the fact that EVERYONE this kid was taking advices from was JUICED TO THE GILLS but no mention of the S word.
Epic hypocrisy!

It's hard to argue with anything you wrote here.   Maybe it was part of the Mtv order, for him to be a dick to the kid.  If Puppy Putnam spoke to any getbigger like that, he'd like get a new asshole torn verbally, due to his own drug use, mocking a natural.

Just to clear this up I believe you are talking about Ron Harris, Ron auditioned like every trainer at the Golds Gym in MA where Ron trains out of. It was purely convenience for the producers. Many people auditioned around the country, MTV sends out talent scouts and Peter happend to be contacted Directly and beat out hundreds of other dude who auditioned.

It's hard to argue with anything you wrote here.   Maybe it was part of the Mtv order, for him to be a dick to the kid.

Also required to choose the absolute gayest, weakest, whiniest kid for every episode.

I think they should do another one where they actually give the kid steroids behind the scenes and see what happens.  Same kid or no, makes no difference.

That kid was like AssHoleLick when he met Avesher at the gym.  He just didn't belong.  But at least he tried.  Something AssHoleLick won't ever do.
