Title: Are Christians "Holier-than-thou?"
Post by: Butterbean on November 03, 2008, 08:37:03 AM
Some seem to be and some do not.

Not sure of the author:

  When I say..... "I am a Christian"
I'm not shouting " I'm clean livin "  I'm whispering " I was lost,  Now I am found, and forgiven.

  When I say..... "  I am a Christian "
I don't speak of this with pride.  I'm confessing that I stumble  and need Christ to be my guide.

  When I say ...." I am a Christian "
I'm not tring to be strong  I'm professing that I am weak,  and need Gods strength to carry on.

  When I say ..." I am a Christian"
I'm not bragging of success.  I'm admitting, I have failed,  and I need GOD to clean my mess.

  When I say.... " I am a Christian"
I'm not claiming to be perfect  My flaws are far to visible  But God believes, I am worth it.

  When I say...."I am a Christian"
I still feel the sting of pain,  I have my share of Heartaches  So I call upon His name.

  When I say...." I'm a Christian
I'm not Holier than thou,  I'm just a simple sinner  Who received God's good grace,
  Some-how.

        Amen and Amen

Matthew 5:3-12

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons[a] of God.

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

I don't know STella.
It depends. They're no better or worse than anyone else probably.
But one thing that strikes me as odd is that so few Christians really even seem to TRY to embrace a Christian lifestyle.
Eg, George W Bush's reaction after the 9/11 wasn't: 'We have to forgive. Love is the message'
Instead he thought that starting a few wars and killing bystanders in the mean time was a-ok.
The weirdest part of this is that most Christians in the USA supported going the aggressive route against the terrorists.
To this day, Obama, a confessed Christian has said that he plans on killing Bin Laden.
Not much of the Christian message of love and forgive there.
Plenty of Christians not only supports long sentencing for crimes, but also supports the death penalty.
Very few Christians take a big chunk out of their salary and goes down to the ghetto and hands out cash or aid to those in need.
Some may pay a little bit to their own church, adding to that churchs wealth.

So Christians are not worse than any other.
It just blows my mind that so many people calls themselves Christians when they clearly disagree with the gospel of Jesus.

u know, i maybe ignorant, but from what i see, christians basically say:

"i am a worthless peace of shit who is no better than anyone else, I know nothing in life, I am weak, meek, and stupid...All I care about is dying since after death i shall meet "the One", definition of which evades me, but i do not question, because I am weak and meek and stupid, and as long as i read the bible and go to Sunday church i shall be spared from the frying pan of hell...."

honestly, from repetitive interaction w/ believers, this is the only postulate that really emerges, to mind mind...

sorry if i offended someone, but i honestly wish some Christian could disprove this view with concrete reasoning (not by quoting the scripture, which any monkey can do"

I would have to say for the most part they seem to be.

also i went to a church service with a good friend of mine this past sunday..why does going always increase my disbelief? im being objective here. everything they talked about was so general in regards to Christianity, no substance what so ever. i honestly think that western Christianity has been watered down so much to attract believers that its too diluted and doesnt resemble what it once was. honestly i think that people go to church to be seen going to church. i asked myself if these people would go to church to truly praise God if they knew no one else would be there or no one knew they went to church..would they still go? i dont think so. that in a way is dishonest imo. the principle reason they are going is not genuine. i look around at all the people who dont know the basics of Christianity, yet they call themselves Christians?

i honestly believe that religion is a private thing.  But most 99.999999% that i know are nut cases.  I am tired of people saying that they are "blessed"  or that they are walking with Jesus or God or whatever. Or that I need to find this or that.  Or that "X religion" is the path.  I think that most people i see/know are religous due to upbringing (brainwashing) and go through the motions believing they are right and don't have the mental fortitude to think for themselves.

To answer the question posed by the subject title, in a nutshell, based on what I've seen by those who profess it...

YES!!!

honestly im not committed or was not committed to any particular denomination. I went to a Catholic elementary and a Baptist high school. Neither school practiced anything different from the other nor did they explain what the differences were between Lutherans, Catholics, Baptists etc. The main theme they preached was the basic "He dies for your sins, water into wine, Noah's arc, walked on water, betrayed Jesus, accented into heaven three days later" jargon. im sure Catholics dont believe Lutherans or Baptists wont go to heaven right?
The service i attend/attended was full of great ways to live your life without any substance about Christianity, probably because most people in attendance would get lost and are only there to make themselves feel better. Its selfrighteous.
separately they can thank God for all the blessing they have yet dont ask why He allows other people and kids to be raped and tortured for generation after generation.
