Title: Today's Polls, 11/3 (PM Edition)
Post by: MattT on November 03, 2008, 04:30:05 PM
With fewer than six hours until voting begins in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire, the national polling picture has cleared up considerably. Barack Obama is on the verge of a victory, perhaps a decisive victory, in the race for the White House.

The national polls have all consolidated into a range of roughly Obama +7. That is right about where our model sees the race as well, giving Obama a 6.8 point advantage in its composite of state and national polling. Our model notes, however, that candidates with large leads in the polls have had some tendency to underperform marginally on election day, and so projects an Obama win of 6.0 points tomorrow.

Far more important, of course, is the race for 270 electors. It appears almost certain that Obama will capture all of the states won by John Kerry in 2008. Pennsylvania, while certainly having tightened somewhat over the course of the past two weeks, appears to be holding at a margin of about +8 for Obama, with very few remaining undecideds. Obama also appears almost certain to capture Iowa and New Mexico, which were won by Al Gore in 2000. Collectively, these states total 264 electoral votes, leaving Obama just 5 votes shy of a tie and 6 of a win.

Obama has any number of states to collect those 5 or 6 votes. In inverse order of difficulty, these include Colorado, Virginia, Nevada, Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, Missouri and Indiana. Obama is the signficant favorite in several of these states; winning any one of them may be fairly difficult for John McCain, but winning all of them at once, as John McCain probably must do, is nearly impossible.

McCain's chances, in essence, boil down to the polling being significantly wrong, for such reasons as a Bradley Effect or "Shy Tory" Effect, or extreme complacency among Democratic voters. Our model recognizes that the actual margins of error in polling are much larger than the purported ones, and that when polls are wrong, they are often wrong in the same direction.

However, even if these phenomenon are manifest to some extent, it is unlikely that they are worth a full 6-7 points for McCain. Moreover, there are at least as many reasons to think that the polls are understating Obama's support, because of such factors as the cellphone problem, his superior groundgame operation, and the substantial lead that he has built up among early voters.

McCain's chances of victory are estimated at 1.9 percent, their lowest total of the year.

He is Canadian. He can't vote, he comes here to gloat because Obama is running away with it. This is the same guy who thinks Dubai is in India and all of a sudden he is interested in American politics? ::) He is just another racist.

Hahaha... Dubai in India? Seriously?

UAE bro... UAE.

I will say this... It does show why the US is the greatest country in the world... No one in the US gives a crap about the Prime Minister of Canada, much less what the election outcome will be... but people certainly do care about who will be the next President of the United States of America.

It's like being the most popular kid in school and having everyone try to sniff your jockstrap after practice just in hopes your ball sweat has some magical properties.

Actually has more to do with the impact USA has. No diss to Canada, but whoever gets in it's pretty assured they won't go around vagrantly bombing nations worldwide.

If a nation sticks it tentacles into 80 over nations with military bases alone, then others will poke into their business. And really, posting an opinion is far less impacting then airplanes with bombs killing folks.

Canada is seen a peaceful nation, what they so as little impact to the world, same with many other nations. They aren't an aggressive nuclear powered nation that routinely invades other nations, which the US does no matter what excuse is given - they routinely invade other nations as their history shows.

So by coming onto an AMERICAN forum and taking cracks at people we respect is the way to handle it, huh? You think MattT calling McCain names on here everyday is classy? The little fucker won't even refer to him by his proper name. If he wants to speak American politics, he should show some respect.

It must suck knowing that despite the hours upon hours you invest in trying to push for a guy on a forum because he's black like you, in the end you have no say in the matter and can't even cast a vote. L-O-L.

MattT, will you and Will be spending your honeymoon in Dubai, India?

I must say, Hedge has been on fire since he got back. Systematic dismantling of MattT in one post in this thread.

MattT and Jag may not be able to vote... but they sure can influence the outcome of the election.

The debates here on Politics, as well as on the main board, have influenced many.  We learned a lot about the candidates.  Matt might never vote here, but he can show why he likes obama to hundreds of potential voters here.

If you think anyone that has posted here for more than six months and knows that the guy posting once claimed to have business investments in Dubai, India will listen to anything he says, well then you're an idiot. Same goes for Jag.

And in the end, their racism and nuthugging of Obama for being black still won't get them a vote to cast. L-O-L.

With all due respect Rob, MattT is an idiot. Nobody here respects anything he says. He's bordeline retarded, and he's only borderline because he's in Canada. Here in America he would be considered officially retarded. He's an idiot, plain and simple, and he comes here making up lies to try to impress us. He's nothing but a typical stupid racist who cares about OUR election for one reason, a black man is running.

I don't think we're being fair with

Much of the topics have been domestic economy.
And we all know what MattT's strength is -  INTERNATIONAL business and venture - particularly Asia and India.

There is a lot of BS in politics board, but there are a lot of breaking news stories here too.

I posted the John Edwards affair story 9 MONTHS before the mainstream media got around to publishing it.

A lot of other stories come out here too, before they are covered by CNN.

If a meteor was about to crush the earth, or some other terrible thing, and it wouldn't benefit the govt to put it on the news (IE: mass chaos) --- it would end up on getbig pretty quick.

No offense Hedge, but several of these guys don't have a problem with you posting on American politics but it's supposed to be taboo for Jag and Matt?  I'm a little lost at where they justify that....  Personally I have no problem with people from other countries commenting in our politics.  When we stop trying to influence the world through force and countless other means, I'll demand commentary on our politics be citizen only...  As I see it now, they have a legit interest in what happens in America.

No, I just think that foreigners should respect our politicians, particularly those who made the ultimate sacrifice and layed their lives on the line for our country. MattT calling McCain names 10 times a day is disrespectful to all Americans and especially our troops who are dying every day fighting for our country. You ban me for telling you to mind your own business on here, yet you allow a pos Canadian to bash a former POW? Where is the logic in that? Like I have said before, there are a few of you, and I am including you, that are so excited about a black president that you have made this place unbearable for the past several months. You guys pick on Coach for his every opinion, because he is white. Most blatant racism I have ever seen.

Show why he likes Obama? All he does is cut and paste and call McCain names. That's it. He takes what is already a very watered down political board(this is a meathead messageboard after all),and dumbs it down tenfold. He is too stupid to have an opinion, he just gloats because we(not him) are going to have a black President, like somehow that validates his existence.

If you want "foreigners" to respect your politicians, ...maybe you ought to vote in respectable politicians.

As for Mccain, he didn't make the ultimate sacrifice, ...his decrepit arthritic shell still fogs a mirror... for now.

That excitment you incorrectly read as being over a "Black" president, is actually excitement over the possibility of a President who isn't a certifiable madman. People pick on Coach because he's an idiot, not because he's white.

You have an entire litany of reasons and factors in front of your face and the only thing you're able to see is race.

what does this question have to do with the post you quoted?  Jag is racist because she supports the black guy according to some of the idiot thinking here.  She was posting from a left of center viewpoint before Obama even entered the election.  Can't very well call her a racist because she supports the candidate that matches her political stance best, can you?  So your question is a red herring to my post.  and yes, there is Obama bashing from non American sources here, but I'm sure it comes more from the other side because Obama seems to be pretty popular in the world.

Yes. That make sense.

Well lets see, ...what do Matt and Jag have in common that Danielson would find so objectionable?

Eureka! I think we have it! Danielson, ...what do you have against Canadians? {lol}

did you hit your head?  I'm still not understanding why it's ok for say Nordic and you to post and not ok for Jag and Matt?  All of these people including you have been accused of absurd statements but nobody is saying you and Nordic can't post, they're saying Jag and Matt can't post.  you don't see a malfunction here lol...

Thank God we have a gas pill peddling whack job and a gay 4 pay midget looking out for the world! ::)

You said it! You could so far worse.

You could have a senile ambien addict nicknamed the songbird & a vapid moose hunting barbie doll running things.

I don't see a double standard.
Nordic posts here as well, CQ too. DeeDee used too as well.
Neither of them are US citizens.
Never once seen them take heat for being foreigners.
But they don't post drivel like: ' 'McSame' sucks. Holla! '

Look harder :-\

I still stand by 3 points:

1 - Unlike many people, I follow much of the world. If I can speak the language of a nation, I most likely have a working knowledge of their politics, if not a detailed knowledge. Many people care not what happens outside of their borders, I've lived all around the world and travel worldwide so have an interest in all the world.

2 - US is very interventionist. Military bases worldwide, invading nations, in my lifetime alone they've invaded my region many times, and occupied my island till I was 15 - not to mention the non-military issues. It is fundamentally nonsensical to expect a gov to go around the world killing folks and interfering all over the place and expect the world to say nothing.

3 - US has stuck with me tax, and years still occur they try it again. My husband was American, and since I live in a tax haven the US gov seems to think that I must pay them, despite me not being American and at no point even trying to become one. When they cough up my money back and stop expecting me to pay them, I will be less inclined to care.

I agree respect should be shown, and I personally generally do. That is something all people could consider though, the lack of respect shown to many nations is there. Canada is slammed day and night, Europe etc.

I know you directed that question to CQ, but I can't help but to laugh out loud.

Were you asking her about being happy to have the protection of, or protection from the US?

Who the heck would want to invade them? Do you think the rest of the world operates like some countries?

The protection of the USA     pfff, ...what they need is a little protection FROM the USA.   :-\

Uhhh, no. "Protection" is the *last* thing we get from the US. :-\

USA is the *only* nation in modern history to ever use military force in us. Only one. Not even had any wars with each other. We had European nations invading us like 150 years ago, but in modern history only the USA has acted with force upon us.

United Nations and over 100 nations have condemned the USA for multiple acts of invading us, fact.

They twist it with the generic "bringing freedom" [we are all democratic apart from Cuba ::)] but common sense would say people don't like to be killed and why democratic free nations need "freedom" god knows, but it sells well to the US public. The fact that say an island may have a combined military force of 1,500, or even a force of 600 with *no* guns  has never stopped the US from bringing marines, navy, airforce here to "fight" us. :-\

Recently [was recently in news?] Venezuala and Russia had combined exercises in our waters. The last, and I do mean last, thing we think of the US military for is "protection". We have made moves since the last military action [1984] from the US againest us and forged alliances with the EU as well as South America to help protect us.

Some islands [he very poor ones] suck up to the US for aid. Rest of us do not.

There seems to be a double standard...

I think Hedge is pretty objective on these boards.

MattT, on the other hand, is not.

I'm not Grenadian actually, not like the US hasn't invaded quite a few islands here, Grenada is just more well known.

And people wonder why the US is not respected. The response to coming here, illegally invading us and KILLING US - it that we need to get over it. And at least you're honest, we know full well it was a training exercise.

And I hope no one thinks I am wrong, when I point out we *glory* in the fact that the invaders managed to kill like a dozen of themselves. Epic fail - invading a tiny nation with like 1,500 "soldiers" bringing your marines, navy and air force and still managing to kill themselves.

Here's a tip: Never discover oil ;)

It has been discovered recently. The timing co-incincided with Russians and Chavez military joining up in our waters. Also for the first time in our history we personally have armed our forces, first time weapons allowed in. We're aren't that stupid ;)

This crying about the US being an interventionist society really cracks me up. Every superpower is pretty much like this. Russia, China, England, etc. You do what you need to do to secure your country's place in the world.

Yes, we could stop intervening and watch China and Russia take over. Yes, that'd be grand.

The only reason we don't hear about all their atrocities is because they have this wonderful concept of censoring the media and only letting out what they want the rest of the world to see.

How do you, Comrade?  ::)

Hey dipshit Hugo, it is racist in MattT's case because the guy's from Canada, cannot name one of Obama's planned policies without consulting google, and is only worshipping the guy because he's black like him.

Oh wait, it's only racism when white people do it. My bad! Modus Operandi for coloreds!

shit, if I ran a small country and we found oil, the first thing I'd do is burn/nuke/ruin it in some way.

Bearing in mind, one thing in our favour we are a "territory" not a country so technically our defense is the duty of our parent nation. Last time the US squeeked into my island and occupied us was in the throes of WWII, our European parent nation was a touch, uh, busy at that time. As of now, they maintain navy ships around our waters to protect all their territories here, plus we maintain relations Venezuala and Cuba and for what it worth [which is not much lol] we have combined forces of multiple islands, which is cheesy as hell, but whatever.

Should be fine, and as we are a peaceful, democratic, economically strong, never had a coup or anything of that kind it will be very hard to "sell" the "bringing freedom" line.

Yea, go ally with Russia and Chavez.

See what ole' Kim Jong Ill and Admedijenadadafefe are doing these days..

They are *not* invading us, that we know. Never have.  In the end same as you all feel you have to protect yourselves, so do we. And of course, we have the fact that we can't, our entire population doesn't even number the amount of troops you have on one base. Even if we armed every man, woman and child, we're flat out doomed. Bane of a tiny place.

Suppose I said about 9/11 "Was a good training exercise for Al Queda and Americans need to get over it". [which I wouldn't] ppl would think I was wrong. Same difference of what was said to me. :-\

Killing, unprovoked attacks etc are all wrong. Anyone who truly feels superpowers have some right to go around killing folks but gets upset when their own people get killed has a huge double standard. Kill, but not be killed. Personally, I dislike it all, and wish peace was more prevalent worldwide asd alutruistic and improbable as that is. :-\

I never said they have the right to do it, but castrating the USA for doing it and turning a blind eye to the fact that China, Russia and others do the same exact thing (the Russians being just as brutal as most terrorists) is what gets me. You and others act like the world will miraculously get better if the USA stopped intervening. Wrong, we would be replaced by China, Russia or someone else looking to extend their power gap.

I've never seen you once make a comment or post about Chechnya or Tibet or a multitude of other Russian/Chinese territories.

Berzerker, you're a racist for even thinking that  :D

Of course I am. Blacks can't be racist, just retarded.
