Yup. In fact, all the extremely rich I know did so through nose to the grindstone hard work, starting their own businesses and making them work no matter what. Of the three closest to me, the one with the most education is the one that flunked out of college-the other two didn't go at all. There's also Bill Gates...let's not forget him.

I think the education itself is not that important, more the better chance of getting to meet the right people. Many startups are spin-offs from unis.

But now, everyone goes to college so it really isn't like "Higher Education"- rather it's Grade 13-16

it is a fact that most people with degrees work for people who don't have them. school teaches millions of people the same thing, so no way they can all be unique. wealthy people get that way by thinking differently from the masses and taking chances - trying things that haven't been done.

If their ideas go bust after 20yrs they have nothing to fall back on. Get your fuckin degrees otherwise you may end up in big shit one day. Trust me on this, you need something to fall back on. Otherwise you need to go back to uni in your 30s or 40s :-X

good point, but if you are making great money you should plant a certain amount into solid assets and savings and still live like you are not making great money. after a point, once you have more than you will ever need you can take chances and live more excessive.

yep there was a guy in our area that dropped out of high school and was homeless for a while.he went on to start his own basket company.longenburger baskets.he's dead now.but he was a millionaire with his company and lots of real estate.there headquarters building is a giant basket.

It sounds like the thread starter is a kid trying to decide if he should go to college or not, and trying to convince himself that he's going to be better off financially by not going. It seemed important to point out to him that his odds of success are going to be greatly improved by going to school, and that a few examples of uneducated guys who got rich is a poor basis for his decision. Besides, most people who went to college look back on those days fondly, so it seems like a good way to transition into adulthood while developing a well rounded intellect and marketable skills.
Fwiw, I didn't finish college and I run my own business. I'm not broke on the bones of my ass but I'm a helluva long way from being rich or even well off.

this is a myth started by jealous poor people who feel bad about their own lack of ambition. working for someone else, even if you make $250/hour has a limit that will keep you from getting rich. anyone who is rich due to money that is not "clean" spends their life worrying about the IRS and tax evasion.

There are far more successful people that went to college than not. Sure, you can find a few exceptions to the rule, but the majority pf people who make a good loving went to school. School teaches you how not to fuck up.

What's important is IQ, motivation, and education in general (college or otherwise). Kids with Post Graduate Business degrees are a dime a dozen these days. Their natural intelligence and motivation are what separates the successful ones. Some places might not hire you without a degree but a lot of smart people are self employed.
How many degreed kids even come remotely close to the the Weiders? Thats not to say all other things being equal a degree won't give you an edge. But brain talent is like bodybuilding talent. If one could get a degree in bodybuilding they're still not going to come remotely close to Phil Heath.
A college education can definately help but how intelligent are you and how hungry for success are you?

Thats cool. I have been on both sides of the fence. I feel I am better off now than I was before. Thats said, I am certainly not saying that you don't make some valid points in your posts.
Further more, a lot depends on what major you decide on when you are in school.

Well.. this only works by what you define as success. If you define success as an academic success well then you are correct, if you talking in terms of financial gain, you are dead wrong. The data that college graduates make more then non college graduates is based on a study from the 1960s. The most current census actually shows very peculiar results. If you do not major in a professional degree (IT, medicine, Law, pharm, etc), then your income well be the same as a non college graduate. Ironically from my own anecdotal experiences, any one with intelligence and some hard work can make any small business flourish. I will give you an example. I went through undergrad, medschool, and a 9 year residency, and my pay has one down every single year since I have been an attending. 5 years ago, I used to make close to 600 a year, this year I am set to make only around 400, and I am seeing more patients!! However, I have a buddy who owns subways, 7 -11s, and dry cleaners, clears well over 4 to 5 million a year. By the way, he is a proud graduate of only 10 grades, but a very hard worker. He had 3 jobs while in high school. Took him 10 years to buy his first franchise, but since then he has not looked back. Lesson learned is to work hard in small businesses because in America people will always value a good hoagie and a tasty slurpy over health care any day.

I agree with everyone on this board that you are definitely more likely to make a substantial amount more $ if you go to college.however I am making close to 6 figures and never stepped foot on a college campus.most of my friends that went to college make 20_30 thousand less and have ridiculous student loans.I guess there are exceptions.

education is great, but the type of education you need to become mega wealthy isn't in any schools. Robert Kiyosaki states that school of any kind teaches you how to be a good employee, not a good investor, which is required to be rich. does your banker ask for your report card, no.

Drew Kaplan (who I’ve met) started his business (DAK mail order catalogue and later DAK.com)while in high school, put himself through UCLA and became very successful in the process. Jay Abraham who I worked for, never went to college and has been a very successful and wealthy consultant. Tony Robbins never went to college.
