Title: Mid to late 30's and still "Chasing the dream"??
Post by: Alex23 on November 09, 2008, 10:55:12 AM
I see many of them on a daily basis; living the full blown 'lifestyle', weights and 'meals' (haha oh brother) comes first, rarely have a career and even if he does comes sloppy second, living paycheck to paycheck, absolutely no savings whatsoever other than the money he piled for his "next cycle"... no kids and usually with a desperate ugly older women , sponsoring his selfishness and submitted to his lifestyle (could she do better?)

Have you ever stopped for a second and thought about what you could do with all that time spent trying to 'make it? And even if you make it, what's the prospect? Is it sustainable? Enough to build a financial future?

What happens when you hit 40 and realize you have neither a career nor the "body" you so insecurely which you had wrapped yourself into  :-X ? Go back the "school" for the 4th time?

I'm 30yo, have both a career and partner in a successful consulting business. I have a Master's degree in Computer Science. I love bodybuilding but it's just a fucking hobby, not a "lifestyle".... when work pops up, "lifting weights" takes the backseat in a heartbeat...

I love how the "no pain no gain all sacrifice for my goal" of 80's early 90's has "inspired" many; I specifically like how they blindly and stupidly live by it without weighting the pros and cons...

Nice post. Couldn't agree more. I love training but I won't let it override my personal life &/or work. Sometimes you gotta do what you goota do.

Where does the "lifestyle" come into play ???

there is no need to live the 'bodybuilding lifestyle'  ::). you go to the gym for 60min 4-5 days a week, and after that you go on with your life.

that's how I do it, I have a job and a wife, I don't LIVE bodybuilding
I don't get 20 chicken breasts a day, lift 2 sessions a day
it's only muscle, it'll go away when you stop working out for a week or two anyways

I agree somewhat. Are they happy, If "living the lifestyle" makes them happy, why comment? Are you happy?

I met one inmate that was huge and shredded, and about 40 yrs old, but looked 30. the man was a happy as a wolf in a slaughterhouse, yet he was just arrested for missing a court date. And chances are he ain't rich neither. But he was laughing and joking. Happier than I seen a lot of people who make 6 figures.

Now, I if they are like , "Bro, I can't make payments on my house, my car's been repo'd, so now I gotta find a way to get to the gym, bro, can I get ride till next week?"
Then I can see what you are talking about. Dude has his priorities out of order, and therefore the lifestyle needs to take a backseat to real life.

Some recent late 30's tools encounters:

2 baldzy muscle bears from the gym shopping for a mini-fridge at Costco to put their GH in...

Having a business dinner with the VP of R&D, guys from Pentagon and state department... and a late 30's tool from work; nice classy place, the tool whines about not finding anything on the menu, pulls out a tupperware with his shit in it... worse part is you have to know that he trains 'cause it doesn't shot...

depends on your level and industry/sector but down here for commercial products a senior engineer with decent skill set it's somewhere between 100-150k + Bonuses and/or stock options...

I think whatever your dream is you should try to do whatever you can to reach it.  If your dream is to have a lot of money then do whatever you can to get money.  If you are striving to get a pro card then something other than money probably motivates you.

But that's dependent on location, right?
Are you in the valley?

I spent 8 years there including grad school. Moved to San Diego last year. Salary scales are relatively the same... at least at my level.

I worked in the bay area for a little while before the dot com crash. Crazy salaries in those days.

Jan 2000... I was at Informatica and hiring kids out of college; would offer them 85-90k, pretty much market... and they would turn it down claiming they had a higher offer from pets.com or some other dot shit... I would simply smile, shake my head and walk away....

so many talents lost....  ;D

I think I can recall a bimbo or two making 100k and bitching about not enough stock options.
A year later, they could wipe their asses with their stocks. ;D

if they even had a job... I remember losing a couple of guys to Ariba "disgruntled employees"... , shit stock, shit company; a year later (nov. 2001) massive layoffs hit them and they came back crawling.

Bittersweet.

there is no need to live the 'bodybuilding lifestyle'  ::). you go to the gym for 60min 4-5 days a week, and after that you go on with your life.

Exactly.  I always laugh at these people who are obsessed 24-7 with anything, really.  You spend any more than an hour in the gym,  you're either trying to squeeze too much into one workout, or you're piddling around too much talking to other people, resting between sets, or--in "kyomu's" case--spending too much time in the sauna giving rubdowns to muscle "daddies" ::)

they've got 2 Whoppers for 4 bucks at Burger King right now.

I sat down and did the math.  According to my calculations I could enjoy 4 Whoppers for 8 bucks!

Lee Priest said something similar a few years back. Pretty much said he'd be an incredibly successful doctor if the same focus/attention were put towards something more useful than bodybuilding.

Older guys should work out and stay in shape but understand "the dream" is over. Even if they 'win' or place well, what do you really have to show for it?

Living a healthy lifestyle should be the goal.

Does Alex23 really care about these wasted lives or is this yet another self-congratulatory thread for Alex23?

Doesn't apply to me, I agree with some of what you say. I think bodybuilders who carry tupperware everywhere are embarrassing for example. I just don't think you give two flying fucks about whether someone is wasting his life. These threads are just a way for you to talk about how successful you are in all facets of life. You have everything, money, bright future, wonderful wife, a Hummer, an amazing natural physique, and etc etc. Not only that but you are also "Getbig Commander in Chief" with the most gimmick accounts out of anyone. Fantastic.

Delusion plain and simple . Unless you're doing it with an athletic goal in mind, including a local show, there are no differences between you and your local crack shooting junkie.

Now comes HRT; I firmly believe in it if the goal is to remain healthy and prosper from your late 40's, early fifties and on. There are environmental factors that will bring your hormonal levels down prematurely.

I love it how some guys on here feel the need to post whatever is on their mind at any given moment.

As if whatever comes out of their mouth is important, and needs to be heard by everyone.

Alex23, give it a rest bro.  Didn't you "retire" from here anyways?

Why would you ponder? Those with lives dont. Get on with yours lol

Why does it bother you so much how one lives their life?  Obviously you have a chip on your shoulder about something?  Do you feel like you have to prove your success to us on this board?  You must be somewhat obsessed with the hobby, being able to find the time to post over 7k times, you spend alot of time paying attention to these individual that are so called "chasing the dream" you obviously couldn't reach.  Good luck with your succesful consulting business. :P
