Title: DHL stops domestic shipping, 9,500 jobs lost
Post by: CQ on November 10, 2008, 08:04:30 AM
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Global delivery company DHL announced Monday that it was cutting 9,500 jobs as it discontinues air and ground operations within the United States.

DHL said its DHL Express will continue to operate between the United States and other nations. But the company said it was dropping "domestic-only" air and ground services within the United States by Jan. 30 "to minimize future uncertainties."

DHL's 9,500 job cuts are on top of 5,400 job reductions announced earlier this year. After these job losses, between 3,000 and 4,000 employees will remain at DHL's U.S. operations, the company said.

The U.S. job market has been bleeding jobs all year. The Labor Department said nearly 1.2 million jobs were lost in the first 10 months of this year, with 240,000 jobs lost in October alone

Though gas prices are down significantly, deisel prices are still fairly high.  Most shipping vehicles use deisel.  Wonder if that is one significant factor.

If they can put off declaring it a recession, just a *little* longer, they get to blame it on the new guy, right?

If you don't work for DHL, then why do you care?

Sounds like the best option to me.

Doesn't affect me in any notable way.

however, I know a few ecommerce programmers who have all their systems automated to calculate and print using DHL integration.   I'm sure there are hundreds or even thousands of people who will have their businesses disrupted as a result of their shipper going belly up.

Also there are 10,000 people (DHL employees) who are out of work and who will now be suckling at the *teet* of unemployment $, which you and I both fund, Hereford.

Yes exactly, unemployment benefits, these people are consumers so as they spend less, possible long term impact if they can't get jobs and turn to crime or not to be rude the kids have issues, related businesses like small diners near old offices will suffer, the trickle down effect mean many things mean they indirectly affect us all.

Now to be self centered, I was glad they didn't stop international as boy do I kill DHL that would have cramped my style >:(

DHL job cuts devastate Ohio community
Residents in Wilmington, Ohio, knew DHL was going to cut jobs, but Monday's confirmation that the company's hub there is going to close has delivered a devastating blow to the community. "They're taking away everything from me -- my family, my friends, this whole town," says a weeping Sherry Barrett, one of more than 8,000 DHL employees facing layoffs.

Man, that sucks.  I feel for her.

This affects me greatly.  I ship DHL with my most popular items....the Turbobells and the Total Trainer Elite Gyms.

This is very unfortunate because it will certainly raise the prices of shipping now that I will only be able to use UPS now.
