Title: My impression of the nationals
Post by: Howard on November 23, 2008, 02:58:50 PM
I left this yrs nationals feeling better about bodybuilding than I have in years.
Ed Nunn is incredible and will do damage in the pro ranks , right away.
Woman's winner S Blenks was an ideal female BB type and did a fanastic posing routine.
Overall, this show was an incredible event and had some great physiques on stage.
I was able to spend a few minutes chatting with IFBB athletes rep Bob Chic at the BB.com booth.
Bob was with his lovely wife and I even saw Bob's baby girl, who he hugged and doated on. Bob is a class act and seems to be a new loving Dad.
I was lucky enough to speak with AMI -VP and co-promoter of the Olympia weekend Robin Cheng.
Sharp guy  and with him on the job it is obvious why the overall production value of the Olympia has improved . Obviously, they want to keep the hardcore BB crowd. But they want to make an effort to reach out to those who are fans of other sports (like MMA) but would relate to BB.
I think this along with the new subtle judging trend , will help grow BB.
I am going to attend my 1st Olympia ( ever) next fall and look fwd to the experience.
With the big pro winners of : Dexter, Freeman, and Heath the sport is moving towards a more overall package as the winning ideal. Nobody should confuse this as move to have a Mr Olympia that looks like muscular swimmer or Bowflex model.Muscle is always the main currency of BB. The 21 st century champ has plenty of muscle on their individual frame. BUT, like Dexter and new nationals champ Nunn, they also have great shape, balance and separation to their physiques. Granted , drugs will remain a constant as part of the contest prep for elite level shows. However, despite what some 'roid gurus may declare, drugs are NOT the end all-be all for a winning physique now. After seeing the top pros of 2008 along with the winners of the 2008 nationals we have moved in a better direction as a sport.
Some may not ""get it" when it comes to the subtle nature of this new , comprehensive package trend.
Anyhooooo, it was GREAT to see Ron , Issac and the rest of the usual suspects last night.
I had a great time and look fwd to an even better 2009 BB year.

Not hating on you but who asked for your "impressions" and since when your "impressions" are valid?

It is a BB board, I am a long time fan and judge and was at the contest. Nothing more than that, why do you ask?

I ask because many here believe they know about bodybuilding. Do you have any certificate to prove your claims of being a "long time judge"? Or you are just another spectator?

I actually am a current NPC "A" level judge and judge our state meet every year and a few other shows.
I was an AAU national judge before that. Even if I was just another fan, I see no reason they can't post their impressions as a spectator at this BB contest , same as anyone else.* If you go to the Georgia-bodybuilding.com site and hit on meet results you can see my name as judge for the NPC Ga state and Atlanta contests.*
I attend lots of BB events, and if you want to meet me and say hey and have others voach for me, than have at it, doesn't matter to me. I just turned 50 and enjoy the sport as a fan of many years.
If you ever come to a show and see me ( pic) say hi and introduce yourself.

I dont really trust websites which are not official ones. I would really like to see a certificate that proves your judge condition. we all know the "friendship" in the industry lead in being a judge without having any knowledge, and with that, the NOT NORMAL placings some competitors get.
Just in case you are wondering what am i trying to say: I say the judges are bought , thats why theres no credibility anymore.

http://www.georgia-bodybuilding.com is the official Ga NPC web site.
You get certified to be an NPC after passing the written test and getting an 85% when test judging at 3 shows.
Look, you can think want you want about the judges, that is is your opinion.
How many actual  contests have you been to as a fan , promoter, judge, volunteer or competed in?Just curious where you got your current opinions from????????

Nice book Howard.  Seems to be a bit out of place on a board like getbig.

Im glad we are having a rational discussion BUT i have the impression you cant really supply evidence about you being a LEGIT and CERTIFIED and RECOGNIZED judge.

Also, the bodybuilding judges are all bribed, thats how it works, most of them are bums, people that kill time in bodybuilding forums, in contests, n such, and since they dont have any decent job, they take all bribes. And please dont tell me you didnt know the floor for bribes start at us$200.

I dont want to believe that hence the reason im asking for a certificate that prove your claims. You can have your impressions but people cant ask you for a certificate that you should have? Or am i right when i said the judges are chosen due friendship?

Give Howie some credit (he shortened his post here compared to his post over at MD!)
My nationals report/overview

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I first saw last nights nationals winner, Ed Nunn, when he won the NPC regional Ky Muscle show last Nov. It was obvious then, he was a future star in BB. Unlike some nationals winners in past yrs, Nunn is ready for the pros now . He will be in the running for the Jan 2009 Ironman Pro. I ran into Tampa , FL Pro Marcus Haley on the way out and asked him what he thought about Nunn. Haley said; " He is the real deal and going straight to the Ironman to give us all hell". Marcus really sums up the level of Nunn's physique last night on the nationals stage.
Overall, the current trend is towards physiques that have great, classic lines over sheer freaky mass. Current pros like Dexter, Heath, S. Samuels , Freeman are the new breed of top pro , that have plenty of mass ON THEIR FRAMES, and also have classic lines and separation. Nobody should misunderstand this and think muscle mass will be marked down. The winner of a modern , major BB contest won't be confused with the physiue of a swimmer or Chippendale dancer. While drugs will remain a constant in elite, hardcore BB; it is NOT the trump card to put you in the winners circle. No question, you need mass and cuts to win, but you also need to be very conditioned with overall balance.

The rest of the super Hvy class, was good but was not close to Nunn.
We all know about BSA and his conditionaing putting him out of the top 5.
Trey Brewer also came in with a lot of hype and while improved , ended up in 4th. His upper body looks very different from his legs ,which are world class right now. Like BSA, Trey is a big man and needs to dial in the separation and it appears he began THAT process with his prep at this show.
I was sitting beside 3rd place SHvy Kulco's mom (Gerry, a pretty redhead )and his gf when he was on stage. It was fun to see them cheering , on the edge of their seats during the super's posing routines. She told me the 23 yr old Kulco is a fireman . The kid looked great and has an ideal pro kind of physique. He just needs more refinement and density.

The Hvys came down to the expected battle between Libatore and Alvisi.
They were BOTH in great condition and it was a battle, but Lib has better overall lines and head to toe balance at this point. Unlike Nunn, Lib should wait a yr before he tests the pro waters and add a bit more size/density to his already near perfect symmetry.

The Lt Hvys was, in my opinion, the closest call of the night. Peter Putnam has wonderful lines, ideal symmetry and full round muscles. However, he was not 100% dialed in and not nearly as sharp from the back compared to the other 2-3 top Lt Hvy's. If Putnam now, "tries to blow up for the pros" he will ruin the best thing about his physique. With his structure I think he should concentrate on being a top under 202 lbs class pro. Putnam is a classic poser and showed grace, and charisma at the night show.

The middle wts class was won by pre contest favorite Guy C. I was sitting in row 4 , sec C , right behind his Mom, and family . They were heartwarming to watch as he won this class. Guy had VERY deeply etched lines on all sections of his physique. I think the class was a lot closer than many would think however. Guy will need to thicken up and add more depth and density to his ripped nationals MDWT winning physique if he wants to content as an under 202 class pro.Once again, it was nice to see the joy and family bond all come toether at Guy's moment of personal triumph.
Bodybuilding could use a lot more of THAT!. You have a GREAT family Guy, and I bet holiday family gatherings are a lot of fun.

The wlter wt and bantam wts were close divisions and a case could be made for any of the top 3 places as a good winner in the wlter wts.
Marvin Ward was the class of the light wts. As Lonnie teper said ;" Marvin Ward, the human statue". He suddenly broke into tears of joy upon winning this class. It was a sincere emotional display of being overwhelmed, at the moment of victory. Anyone who thinks that a physique like Marvin Wards is due (mostly) to drugs should have their head examined.

The womans hvy and overall winner S Blecks was incredible and ready for the pros , right now. Her posing was graceful and combined with some classic old school gymnastic static strength poses. She was a real pleasure to watch and I was lucky enough to get my pic with her.
Female BB has some ideal female physiques entering the pro ranks now based on the class winners at this nationals. They seem to combine being a bodybuilder with a feminine look.

The Grand Hyatt ATLANTA Ballwoom is an ideal venue for a BB meet. Granted ,the historic FOX theatre down the street ( site of the 1979 Mr America) would be better, but overall the set up was great. The vendors were in the back of the ballroom with wide rows and easy access . One could visit the booths and not miss any action. Pam Betz, main promoter along with our own Ga NPC Chair, Ty Ropeman Felder put on a first class event. The stage was tiered and very well lit ,with plenty of room to hold the larger classes. The ht of the stage helped with visibility considering the flat ballroom floor and reg chairs for the audiance.
I was able to speak with several of the usual suspects , that inhabit most major BB events. I got a kick out of seeing and briefly chatting with MD;s own Jumbo Polumbo. Dave looks real healthy, laid back and fit these days.
Current female pro and local ATL chriopractor Mimi Jabalee introduced me to the lovely Collete Nelson. Collete is a stunning beauty in person with pretty eyes and a 1000 watt smile.

I was able to spend some time chatting with IFBB athlete rep , Bob Chic at the BB.com booth. Bob was there with his lovely wife and I even got to see him hugging his beautiful baby girl. Bob Chic is a class act , and the kind of image I think we need more of in BB. Bob went out of his way to give BSA some sound advice and encourage him to stay in the sport. He used his own personal story of taking 13 yrs to turn pro as a great example for not quitting after one nationals defeat.Bob also looked to be a very loving dad as well. Bravo Bob!
While talking to Bob, I was able to meet AMI rep and Olympia promoter Robin Cheng. Robin is a sharp guy and even answered my question about why FLEX put a couple MMA fighters on the cover.
I was able to provide my 2 cents about the direction of BB and learned a lot from listening to him. I just got my DvD box set of the 2008 Olympia and feel that the production value of the Olympia is now outstanding. I will be attending the Olympia in 2009 and want to thank Robin for taking the time to speak to a "regular guy " fan like me.

Jay Cutler was working a booth and seems determined to bring back the 2001 Jay . If he does, he could be the first Mr Olympia to win the title back after having lost it on stage. I am sure Dexter and some others will have something to say about that however. I ran into Ron Aviden ( getbig) and Issac of Lift Studios. Both are funny guys that share my passion for BB. One booth had some hot babes that were passing out these sex stim /natural viagra tab samples. They were quite flirty and really good natured. Obviously, I took a few samples and will try it out hehe.

I saw MD's Steve Blechman sitting in the press pit, but was unable to have a chance to speak with him. I always enjoy getting his take on a contest. I am sure he will have some good coverage and critiques in a future MD.
This show was a great chance to meet/greet many of the top pros , away from the tensions of competing in a pro show.
Dexter had a steady crowd at his booth, and remained busy with the fans. I managed a good pic with S. Samuels ( the matador). He was dressed like a movie star and is real charasmatic in person. I am now a converted Samuels fan. David Henry was nearby and being one of my favorite pro physiques, I snapped a pic with him on my new I-phone. David looked massive in a tight, long sleeve shirt.
With pros like this ,the under 202 class will be always be a hit with the fans and the class with remain in demand by many.
One of the great perks of BB, is that unlike many other sports, fans like me have access meet some of its' top pros .
1995 NPC Nationals champ don Long was working a booth. No longer an active pro due to kidney problems, Don looked healthy and seemed happy to be around the sport he loves.

Needless to say the 2008, NPC nationals in my backyard of ATL was a great show overall. It is refreshing to see the trend towards a total package as the winning formula. The only problem issue is now with the figure div being combined with the BB at the nationals. I like the figure class, but the current huge number of figure entrants make it a basic logistics problem and tends to make the night show a bit too long.
I left the show feeling more positive about BB, then I have in years.
Howard

Look like GARBAGE!

I had my I-phone camera and got some nice shots.
I enjoyed the show and came away with a really positive feeling about bodybuilding.
I felt like blogging about it , and know only a few % will read it over on MD, but also know I need to keep it short on this board.
You are pretty cool Mike, and walked the walk as a bodybuilder, plus you have a smokin' hot wife :D.
It is my impression that the most negative folks on the boards are the ones that never go to a contest.
Granted I get cracked on by plenty here at GET BIG, ironic how they rarely debate the content of my posts.

Everytime I see Ron A at a contest we crack up over the nature of some of the posts here at Get Big.
I have a really laid back sense of humor, love BB and never give most of this crap a 2nd thought
I always kid my physics students and tell them they ought to get credit for just being locked in a classroom with me as their teacher and have to hear me ramble on about physics for 90 min  :P

Look benz, if it really bugs you contact NPC Ga chair Ty Felder care of his address on the Ga NPC site or contact the national NPC in Pittsburg or come and meet me at a show, etc.
If that is not to your liking....oh well.
BTW, when was the last time you even went to a BB contest? Just curious, no biggy

i will answer ALL of your questions as soon as you answer mine, which is only one: Where is your certificate that prove you are a real+legit npc judge?

No need to mention names of g4p guys, just answer if theres any certificate or not.

Mike, Howard .... Thanks for the above posts. Although I may not agree with everything you posted, I got to admit that it's good reading posts from guys who know what they hell they are talking about.

Good judgement on Chick too, Howard. In all the years I've know Bob, he's always been a class act. And now he's a great dad too!

And for you who might be doubting Howard, he definitely is a certified NPC Judge.

Take that from me - the guy who knows all and never lies when it comes to truthfulness - Or something like that.

Benz by asking for a  "judges certificate" proves you know nothing about how you become a judge in the NPC.
Just so you will know here is how it actually works:
1. You take written test given by your state NPC chairmen.
2. You then have to test judge and get an 85% score for 3 contests as an UNofficial judge.
3. Each yr you get an NPC card ( opt for the reg BB member card or a slightly less expensive NPC officials card).
4. You are placed on the certified judges list with the office of your state NPC chairman.Based on your experience ( yrs as an active judge) you get rated C, B or A. I have an "A level" judging rating in the Ga NPC district.
I judge the Atlanta and Ga state meets each yr for NPC ga state promoter Ken Doc Neely.
Our head judge is Doug Jerry  and I have served on panels with well known bodybuilders such as masters nationals champ, IFBB pro George Thurmond .
5. The promoter and state chair pick the panel for various meets in your geographic region based on seniority and availibility , etc. I have been invited to judge in various meets outside of my state as some promoters want to remove any chance of a "hometown" judging bias.
6. National judges have to test judge at the national level as well and then are put on the national NPC judges list.

Now if you think we all get bribes, and know a different selection process for NPC judges please inform me. Oh please  give us all some names , places and contest dates where judges were bribed.
Who bribed the judges , what is the name(s) of the judges, what was the amount of $$, etc.

Thanks and I agree, Bob Chic is a class act and great example of what BB should be about.
Mike A is hardcore BB and like me has a sense of humor here on the boards.
I sure as hell don't know everything, but on Bb I know a lil' something and love the sport.

I swear to GOD I laughing my ass off over this pic of an NPC card request.
I am not sure but this has got to be off the wall attempt at humor on your part.
Maybe you can contact all the national judges and BB's that were at the show last night and they can scan their NPC cards for ya as well  :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D.

Benz, you have wierd sense of humor, but I think your digs are kinda funny in an odd , off the wall kinda way.
Take care. see ya around, and do you ever go to any shows? I was just curious, nothing more?

So, theres no way to prove you are a valid judge unless i call ty. Is (770) 452-8582 still a valid number? Do you think he will be bothered if i call him at 1 am to ask him if you are a judge?

And yes, i go to shows, why howard?

Thanks for your observations and opinions.  Some of us aren't blessed enough to be able to attend these shows and really appreciate you taking your time to write down what you saw and your opinion.  Then again you have some of us that just want to sit back at home typing on their computers all night and trying to give everyone else a hard time.  I, for one, am a true fan of the sport and I appreciate the info.  Thanks again.

I don't go to as many shows as I would like due to time, $$$, etc.
I spent many past years just getting by and didn't have the bit of extra $$ I now enjoy.
I am no rich man, trust me, but thanks to many years experience and a couple grad degrees, my teaching salary has risen over the last 20 yrs.Plus, I am not raising any kids and only have my wife and 2 dogs.
The get big board is a fun blog/forum and I enjoy it.

Now you know how my physics students feel, after listening to me for 90 min.

Summary: Howie went to the nationals, saw the show and talked to some fellow musclehedz.
He saw Ron and Issac and they tried to avoid him but he was too obnoxious so they paid Bob Chic to talk to him. Bob was  with his wife and kid anyway and kinda bored, he was ok with baby sitting Howie for a bit.

Also, don't forget the list the number of gay 4 pay posing sessions and otherwise,
that were utilized to finance contest preparations.

I looked decent but not any " legend of the sport"  needless to say  ;). I am 100% certain to do the NPC over 50 Nationals this summer (July). Bix posted a few pics  of me at my best a couple weeks ago here on GET BIG.
The price paid to compete is the DIET and I am ready to pay up and look ripped by July 09.
Thanks again, Howie
