Title: Mental Training
Post by: TBUNZEE on December 01, 2008, 05:32:23 PM
Comming from a psychological background I am just wondering what type of mental state do most of you train with.  When I was younger I blasted the "angry tunes" like Mettalica, Danzig, Iron Maiden, DMX, etc. to get me pumped and focused on angry energy to blast through weights and sticking points.  My old quote was "I PUNISH MYSELF TODAY TO PUNISH OTHERS TOMMOROW" which created an angry get thr F out of my way attitude when training (without being a dick about it in the gym).  Lately countless articles have highlighted that this so-called negative energy is wasted and drains physical limitations.  Supposedly you should focus on positive energy and mental rehearsal of lifts before doing them, such as "I can do this wieght and envision yourself doing it before you attempt it" blah blah blah, as taught in sport pyschology priniciples.  I still believe to this day that when I blast the "pump up" tunes and get a little aggressive and angry I fight harder on my lifts.  Just wondering if anyone has thought about that aspect and how do you set yourself up mentally before and during workouts....Please comment

Imagine that you're a pony. One of the my little ponys. And that it's a beautiful day and you ride on a rainbow.

FLAGADJONES.....Read it correctly dumbass "it was my old quote" from high school days.  I am also not sure how you can judge me from the comments and am not sure why this is a bad post.  I guess you never think mentally about workouts and only physically so stay on your limited planes of thought and stop reading any post I create in the future.  Thanks for comming out pal....
Title: Visualization and YOUR MINDSET BETWEEN WORKOUTS

I do use visualization. It prepares you for the movement neurologically and I consider it half of the warmup.

Put both hands on the bar and leave them there. Close your eyes and imagine yourself pumping out solid reps smoothly. No struggle, the triumph of strength. Do that for like 7 seconds. (Note: Some may tell you to imagine doing the weight as if it's very light. This doesn't work as well as being more realistic and can be dangerous. Just imagine the reps being "solid," "smooth," and "steady.")

It should be mentioned that your mindset BETWEEN workouts will have a greater bearing on your progress than anything. You must FEEL like you're progressing, like you're growing. Then, when your workout comes around, you'll KNOW you can do it!

Buy the book "Ironmind: Stronger Minds, Stronger Bodies" and utilize it.
It's by Randall Strossen, author of Supersquats:

i can observe that you're an insecure lad who seeks aproval and attention like so many others on here as previously stated in otehr threads, cause you're the one who feel the need to expose his life stories, pictures and thoughts on the internet.

You morons have the choice between exposing your life, or not. And you choose to do it exposing yourself to strangers judgment. Tough shit retard, if you didnt figure it could happen.

Now excuse me if i'm criticzing your life because you exposed it and cause i'm not saying what you would like to hear. It only proves you're a bitch who has troubles dealing with human relationships and go apeshit like a kid when people think you're a moron.

Wow a great answer without any bullshit or dumass comments.  This is exactly why I joined up here.  I am going to def. check out this book.  From behaviour modification and sports pyschology training I took in university it seems as though this is the way to go.  Very intelligent answer and good recommendation for a smart read.  Thanks Soundness.....

What's the big deal dude? You don't get to meet many people off line who are into the whole bodybuilding thing and with whom you can therefore, talk about things like this. Besides, he's just posting a couple of pics and asking what people think - no different than movie buffs analyzing various aspects of a movie or it's actors or whatever, or anyone else discussing indepth things they are into with other people who are interested in the same thing.

No one who has posted pics here has said that they'd off themselves if they get judged harshly or that their life depends on what the resulting opinions are going to be or anything. Maybe you are reading into it too much.

Glad to help, TBUNZEE.  ;)

You'll love the book. It's great because the chapters are short and incorporate stories on how certain people utilized certain techniques. The chapters are only about 4 pages or less (small print), so if you don't have time you can read one really quickly and it will fire you up! There are 60 chapters, too, so tons of content. I love the book because even if you feel like collapsing into your bed you can read a chapter quick and its message will flutter through your head the entire night. That is a very good idea, to read a chapter each night before bed.  :)

Guys guys.. lets try to be positive here and help eachother... we're all brothers of the iron !

Myself I will experiment during a 6 week period with different music each week... and record and analyze the result... with music from Metallica to Britney. Metallica can give me that extra anger... but it might also sap my strength when I get reminded that Hetfield sounds like a whiny bitch.
Britney might not be as heavy... but maybe the thoughts of a hot MILF will put me in the "zone"

Time will tell.

if you want smart answers from smart people dont introduce yourself posting pics of your tattooed retarded physique and face sporting a 12 y/o cage fighting kid 's attitude.

I guess the same shit happens to you in real life when people see you for the first time.

Bluto that would be an awesome experiment.  Listen to "angry music" like Metallica for a couple weeks vs. Britney and record your weights and progress to see how it affected your lifts.  I am very interested in the reults so If you actually do it make sure to get back to us as Im sure many others on here would be curious as well.  Cool thought bud....

Wow is FLAGA actually posting a real positive comment or is he being sarcastic ?  So much hate towards me for no reason gotta make me think he's got some problems as it came from nowwhere and wasn't warrented from anywhere.  I have no hate in my heart for ya just wondering where it came from and why ?  Im off to chill with the gf but appreciate the smart, positive and intelligent comments from others on this thread.  For FLAGA keep being immature and stuck inside your narrow-minded world....Also your hating so much on a young guys physique makes me wonder what you look like....Keep it real and have a good night ya'll.....peace....
