Post by: JediKnight on December 02, 2008, 02:08:50 PM
Hey Everyone,
I am thinking of getting a treadmill for my home. I will spend alot if needed, but I would like to get some suggestions on some good deals. I also want it delievered and put together for me. Can anyone suggest a good company that maybe has wholesale prices. Thanks.

I would look into the models that Sears carries.  They have good treadmills and will assemble.

Might want to check out 2ndWind.

No matter what you decide, test it out for at least 20 minutes before purchasing it.

We just bought a treadmill for the house too!  It's pretty much a gym quality machine (you definitely need to have the room for it).  It's a Gold's Gym Cross Trainer 600. We love it!  We just roll outta bed and jump on it.   :D

Precor is THE BEST... I am SOOOOOO jealous that you have a Precor elliptical!!  I love their ellipticals and their bikes, so I imagine the treadmill is good too.

Oh.... Hi Jedi!  :)

I like Precor.  My elliptical is a nordic trac.  I like it, albeit pricey  :(

From the service side, precor treads are so so. Their ellipticals are great...the 546 and 556 have been a staple for awhile now....hell, there are still gyms that have the old school 544's on the floor.

As far as treads go....you get what you pay for. think of it as a car....its a big purchase......dont expect to drive cross counrty in a $300 car you bought at a gas station. Same thing goes for a tread....spend the extra $$$ to get something that isnt going to break down and die in a year or two

whatever you buy....cheap or expensive....MAINTAIN IT!!!!! decks and belts need wax (most do at least), tread belt wear and need changing, motors and lower boards should be vacuumed and blown out periodically...its like the car thing again....change the oil, get new tires, periodic tune ups...

do your research before buying, and TRY the product out first. some have better shock absorbing systems, some have wider belts, automatic wax systems

******if money is no object....and from a satisfaction standpoint....go with a LifeFitness treadmill.****** They have a HUGE line of commercial, light comercial treads that are outstanding. their quality control is great....and they have strong warranties. precor is good as well, im just not a fan. too expensive to fix....constant problems, kinda fickle treads in my opinion. woodway's are great....just waaay overpriced.

also remember that if you put a commercial tread in your home....most need a dedicated 20amp circuit...otherwise it will eventually pull too much amperage and fuck up the tread....and always pop the fuse

you can also look at places like global fitness and fitness equipment source and grab a remanufactured commercial treadmill for about 1/2 of what they would cost...

It was 22 degrees this morning where I live.   >:(

I love walking outside for cardio.  I'll do it in dry weather above 45 degrees.

I wrote this awhile back on this site.  Maybe it will be helpful.

Don't be fooled by horse power ratings.  What you want to look for is CHP not HP rating. That's continuous horse power rating.  You might see a treadmill that rates itself at 2.0 hp when it only has a CHP rating of 1.0 hp.

You need at least 2.0 for a running treadmill.  2.75  CHP is what I recommend.  Good treadmills cost a lot.  Cheap treadmills break and feel like junk to run on.  Maybe walking is okay but you can instantly tell the difference when running.

You might be able to find a usable cheap treadmill for around $700-$800 but I doubt it.  One of the original running treadmills is Pacemaster.  They have a model that sells in stores for about $1700.  Another good brand is True. I own the cheapest one and it cost about $1800.  Lastly if you can afford it is Landice.  They are expensive.  All brands can have problems even the best mentioned.  You can put the odds in your favor though by buying quality.

Don't be confused by treadmills talking about how fast they can go.  In general they all have the same speed claims.  My treadmill goes up to a 6 minute mile.  The incline goes up to 12 degrees.

Also don't think you need a display board that looks like the control panel for a space ship.  Keep it simple.  You need a speed button and an incline.  My True model shows you running around a simulated quarter mile track that is the standard distance for Track.  You need to change between miles per hour and how many minutes it takes to run a mile.  No one in track says they are going for a 10 MPH run pace.  You will hear let's keep it at a 8 minute mile pace.  MPH is meaningless for serious runner.  It's a nice feature to have both on a machine.

Most guys using a treadmill on this site don't give a damm about running but just want to get ripped by doing cardio.  If you see yourself just fast walking on a incline a cheap  one might work.  If you like to run regular spent the money.  Walking fast on a treadmill on an incline is tough work.
