Title: Mickey Rourke, The Wrestler
Post by: bradistani on December 05, 2008, 11:43:26 AM
Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler has been getting rave reviews from critics everywhere. Especially for Rourkes performance (tipped as a Oscar nomination worthy), which going by what I've read and seen on the trailer, looks fucking awsome.

I can't fucking wait to see this.

Also lovin' the Springsteen song he wrote for this film.

In theaters: December 17, 2008

Genre: Drama

Director: Darren Aronofsky

Cast: Mickey Rourke, Marisa Tomei, Evan Rachel Wood

Back in the late 80s, Randy The Ram Robinson (Mickey Rourke) was a headlining professional wrestler. Now, twenty years later, he ekes out a living performing for handfuls of diehard wrestling fans in high school gyms and community centers around New Jersey. Estranged from his daughter (Evan Rachel Wood) and unable to sustain any real relationships, Randy lives for the thrill of the show and the adoration of his fans. However, a heart attack forces him into retirement. As his sense of identity starts to slip away, he begins to evaluate the state of his life — trying to reconnect with his daughter, and striking up a blossoming romance with an exotic dancer (Marisa Tomei) who is ready to start a new life. Yet all this cannot compare to the allure of the ring and passion for his art, which threatens to pull Randy The Ram back into his world of wrestling. Director Darren Aronofsky presents a powerful portrait of a battered dreamer, who despite himself and the odds stacked against him, lives to be a hero once again in the only place he considers home inside the ring. THE WRESTLER had its North American premiere at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival and won the Golden Lion at the 2008 Venice Film Festival.

the trailer is AMAZING. brought a tear to my eye

I could not see nic cage playing the lead in this movie (as he was the initial choice for the lead role)

If mickey rourke doesn't win a oscar, it will because hollywood doesn't want to give its most prestigous award to someone portraying a "phony rassler"

Darren does an amazing job channeling life on "the indies" for the aging "superstar"

Oh yeah, totally on both counts. Funny, cause the first thought when I saw Rourke was, "shit, DDP". Then, the whole daughter thing, was Jake all over again.

I hope that most people are familiar with Rourke’s earlier acting.   He also had a small but trenchant role in “Body Heat,” playing a jailed bomber.  Also, “The Pope of...” had perhaps the best work by Eric Roberts.
Rourke was on his way to the top when he did “Year of the Dragon.”  Bad choices ensued.
I think the French love him almost as much as they love Jerry Lewis.

Awesome film, Gallo called her 'a girl' after working with her. She took it really well and said she's glad she did the movie. I liked her better all curvy than the skinny bitch she is now! Same for Lohan.

great  flick----one of my favs

have you see Gallo's "Brown Bunny"---------not many liked it but it was one of the most intense films Ive ever seen------teh flow and rythm of the movie is really slow in the beginning but actually adds to the overall feel of the movie when you get to the end.

Domino and Sin City are some great current works of Rourke. Raw, gritty and a strong performance.   But than again, maybe he is just playing himself. Those indie films, like the Wrestler, always seem to bring out the best for any actor. Also the best story lines. May be hard to find the film anywhere unless you town has a smaller "art" movie house. Usually by college campuses.  Could have a general release though. Check out Amazon and see if they are selling it soon. Or even try a bittorrent, who knows you might get lucky.

Eric Roberts, when does he ever stop over acting.

Mickey Rourke, the star of the outstanding movie The Wrestler, will be participating in WrestleMania 25. The event, which is the largest WWE show of the year, takes place on April 5 in Houston, TX. It looks like Rourke will be involved in an angle with Lionheart Y2J "2008 WWE Superstar of the Year" Chris Jericho. In a recent interview with Access Hollywood, Rourke said:

"The boys from the WWE called me and asked me to do it. I said, ‘I want to.’ I’m talking with 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper about it. The nicest thing has been the whole wrestling community embracing us. The movie was about their world. Chris Jericho, you better get in shape, because I’m coming after your a**."

By "a**" I'm sure Rourke meant "ant". It's a widely known fact that Jericho is an avid ant collector and it would be dastardly of Rourke to steal his prizedformicidae. Okay, I totally made up that last part. Still, it's pretty cool that Rourke will be part of WrestleMania 25. His movie is a fairly accurate -- and certainly powerful -- portrayal of the dysfunctional lives many wrestlers from the '70s and '80s led (and more than a few continue to lead). It's appropriate for the star of a critically acclaimed wrestling movie to be part of the biggest wrestling show of 2009.

Yes I know Mick and if this was prior 2007, he would of kicked the shit out of Chris, but know he's a calm mature man..... with nothing to prove. 8)

the trailer is AMAZING. brought a tear to my eye

I could not see nic cage playing the lead in this movie (as he was the initial choice for the lead role)

Actually(Not trying 2 b a smart ass) But Mickey Rourke was always the original man intended for the role..but was coping w/ many issues..hence Nicholas Cage stepped in and sucked..so they ended up getting Mickey back
