Title: Do you think $43.00 a month is too much
Post by: Karl Kox on December 05, 2008, 11:56:27 PM
I trained at metroflex for a few months but $43.00 a month seems a little high to me.  So I went back to my old gym even though it was all the way on the other side of Dallas because the owner only charges me $20.00 a year.

I really think there are more factors at play than just a monthly rate.  Hours and who else will be working out at said gym are very important to me.

I agree they are both open almost the same hours.  I train by myself at both places most of the time

Amazing rates, 20.00$ year, you lucky guys in states.

Here I pay 350€ special year offer, if you pay monthly will be around 60€.

And no way gym like yours.

Where are you at?

No but the owner is a real nice guy.   I'm sure he gives a few of the guys who have been there for a while the same deal.  It's a small place , sorta like Metroflex.

That's pretty cool. I envy you; here in San Diego, the corp. have taken over; LA Fitness, 24hrs... not more mom and pops gyms :(

I wish thought, I like these smaller places and bring in good energy when I'm around.

$43 is a lot for anything in tx.  metro looks hardcore but run down. must be the ronnie factor.

worst - 24fit, it's just nothing good to say about weight training...just all club membership through usa...so if you move around, there is somewhere to workout

best - betterbodies, they keep the fitness club theme but put some money and space 5000sqft> into free weight area and separate it from the children stuff.

2nd best - world's gym, it's a good setup if it is small... but watch for the owner. i paid off the last 4 mths of a membership i had...just to get rid of the b###h that ran the one i got suckered into.

3rd best - home gym, had a nice $1200 setup with about 600lbs free awhile back. it's easy to keep a 3on/2off type schedule  w/out messing w/other parts of your life.

do 3 days a week at 24fit. will have to do.  $33 all club.  other stuff is at least a 40 min commute now to and from.

As long as gas prices stay reasonable, it probably isn't a bad idea to stick with the old gym.  I suppose the Dallas traffic is the worst part of the puzzle.

Karl, I think it's an ok price.  At Gold's in Gurnee, IL...is $100 down and then 58 a month.  If you don't want to pay the 100 up front, then it's 68 a month.  At Powerhouse in Waukegan, I'm paying 42 a month, no initiation fee.  Up in Milwaukee at Animal House Gym (where Art Atwood would always train) it was 40 a month, no contracts..nothing just bring in a check or cash each month which was awesome.  It was in a warehouse...all Body Masters and Hammer Strength equipment...nothing fancy, but lot's of equipment.  So I think what you're paying is pretty decent.

Gurnee, Waukegan, Milwaukee?  Dude, you must be making millions of dollars a year living in those fine areas.

It's just cheaper cost of living up here.  We can purchase a nice home (around 2800 sq feet) for 250k-ish out by Lake Villa.  At the same time, some friends of ours purchased a townhome in Carol Stream for 275k thats a fraction of the size.  Granted there's a commute involved, but you can get a better home for the money up here.

I have to fork out $64 a month.  :(

But it's all relative. It's a fairly expensive part of Sydney and obviously people are willing to pay that much. And in the last 12 months quite a few new gyms have opened up in the area, but they don't really appeal to me.

My gym is very basic but has everything i need. No saunas or spas, classes or shit like that, just basic machines and lots of free weights.

I was going to say the same thing about Phoenix Alex.  From what I can tell, there are no more hardcore-type gyms.  Just LA Fitness, 24-Hr, Golds HEALTH CLUB, etc.  I really miss the Davenport, IA.  Two really good hardcore gyms.

In Lubbock I paid $842 for a year membership @ bodyworks for me and my wife.  The membership includes access to 4 different gyms around town, all of which are pretty nice.  It's good for me because sometime I get tired of training at the same gym.

Zack Thomas has a gym in Lubbock but it sucks compared to Bodyworks

It costs a lot to run an independent gym, especially when you don't get a lot of phantom members (they sign up and you never see them).

$43/month is pretty average for a decent gym IMO.  See if they have a Discount if you pay a year up front.  Otherwise, you can go to Ballys or 24hr fitness...which may have specials and can be cheaper, but you have to accept that kind of soft atmosphere.
