My Mac laptop is never turned off.  When I am not using it, the lid is closed and it is in "sleep" mode until I open it again.  It is always plugged in.  I only turn it off (or use battery power alone) when I am traveling or transporting it.  That said, the laptop is my secondary computer;  I use it mostly in bed and do most of my computing on a desktop machine.

I have never had a problem with my current Macbook or my old Powerbook using it this way.

I have only used a laptop for the past 10 years or so.  I love mine now with the 17" screen.  I rarely turn my off too.  I close the lid and let it sleep.  I usually have to wake it up with my finger print reader.  I have a laptop cooler base it sits on to keep it cool.  It makes a ton of difference in performance.  I found out it really slowed down when it got hot.  I do turn it off sometimes when I leave just in case cause I heard about battery fires in some laptops.
