Selling steroids online nets Chandler man 22 years

A Chandler man was sentenced to 22 years in prison by a federal judge in New Haven, Conn., Tuesday, for manufacturing and selling steroids on the Internet.

Edwin Porter, 42, pleaded guilty in June for conspiring with two other Arizonans to buy more than a kilogram of raw steroid powder from China, manufacture anabolic steroids and then distribute them to people around the country through MySpace.com, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney Office in the District of Connecticut.

The investigation, dubbed Operation Phony Pharm, was headed by the FBI's Healthcare Fraud Unit in Connecticut. The initiative goes after sites that sell drugs over the Internet without a doctor's consultation or legal prescription.

The trio set up a MySpace.com account under "anabolic-ss" and an Internet Web site called www.anabolic-superstore.com.

Tyler Lunn and Matthew Peltz have also pleaded guilty to steroid distribution charges. Lunn was sentenced to five months in prison; Peltz has not been sentenced.

The comments section shows how little people actually know about AAS and just go by what the television tells them to believe.

22 years is ridiculous for that crime. Murderers get less time.

Sure, but hey, it's not like it's not illegal or anything. Face it, they want to make an example out of people like that, so that the "soccer moms" will be happy and believe little Timmy is going to be safer now.  ::)

The idiot who wrote that article made a "tiny" error.  He got 22 months, not 22 YEARS.  22 years would be insane.

This whole matter is still CRAZY 22 months or just under two years at 55,000 to 75,000 per year to hold someone in jail is LUDICROUS. Add in the cost of the sting operation and all of the court costs and cops etc and you're talking well over 200,000 dollars to arrest one man...and he didn't even get to sell the steroids he "SUPPOSEDLY" was going to make.

I hate the whole "make an example" philosophy when sentencing someone. The time should fit the crime.

Not surprising, I think it's something like 60% of our prisons are filled with non-violent drug offenders.  He was cutting into someone else's income that's why he was taken down.

Two Chandler men and a Phoenix man have pleaded guilty to one felony count of conspiring to distribute anabolic steroids through their Internet-based business, the U.S. District Attorney's Office announced Tuesday.

Edwin Porter, 42, of Chandler, was sentenced Tuesday to 22 months in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Mark Kravitz in New Haven, Conn., and three years of probation for his role in planning to distribute the performance enhancing drug.

Porter had pleaded guilty in June, and his business partners, Matthew Peltz of Chandler and Tyler Lunn of Phoenix, pleaded guilty to the offense in August.

The men's business was investigated by the FBI.

According to court documents, the men conspired to purchase more than one kilogram of raw steroid powder from China and manufacture the anabolic steroids at Porter's home or Lunn's apartment in Phoenix. They then planned to sell and distribute them to customers through a MySpace.com profile and another Web site, according to the U.S. District Attorney's Office in Connecticut.

Lunn was sentenced to five months in federal prison in September, and Peltz will be sentenced in January, according to Tom Carson, spokesman for the U.S. District Attorney's Office in Connecticut.
