so their waists are smaller than their shoulders? What's the point of that??
-
Samir was unequaled that night
-
Fox best ever showing - I went to a seminar of his in 89 and he was still bleating about not winning and how the Weiders had it in for him :-\
-
I never realized how gay it really gets when the free pose session starts.
-
Fox. Can't blame him or others for complaining, the results obviously impacted careers.

You think he won in 83?

You think he won in 83?
Prob deserved top 3
-
Fox EASILY should have won in 1983. Sammir should have been runner up and then Lee Haney. After that maybe Makkaway and then 180 pounds Frank Zane.
-
Real bodybuilding, real muscle.
-
Bertil Fox owned the competition that night.
-
I think Sammir has the Trophy and the cheque from that nite :-\

maybe they didn't believe in quadriceps back then? :)
Obviously not...probably not one guy over 230lbs
hahahah....what tiny tits!!
-
Samir is clearly the best if you watch the individual routines.
-
Damn - Haney looked tiny in that video.
He was I believe 230 pounds
-
What is that the midget olympics?
-

Yeah, but imagine if Dorian Yates walked out while they were posing. And then - BAM! - Ronnie Coleman.
Now who's your 1983 Mr. Olympia, Ronnie or Dorian?

Dorian ;)

Bertil Fox owned the competition that night.
Actually Im shocked that he doesnt look as HUGE next to Frank Zane... and Frank is 5'9"
-
Samir was the rightful winner that night, but he`s lucky that Jeff King was in the AAU.
King had one of the best builds on the planet in `83 !
-

They didnt believe in huge skull, jaws, hands, feet and guts given by HG, I mean you cant Bodybuild forever.....
-
Yeah, but imagine if Dorian Yates walked out while they were posing. And then - BAM! - Ronnie Coleman.
Now who's your 1983 Mr. Olympia, Ronnie or Dorian?
Ronnie would have had 12 inches calves (with what was available in 83')
Yates about 14 inches arms ......
-
Fox was FORCED to lose 20-25 pounds of muscle from the 1982 Mr. Olympia to the 1983 Mr. Olympia. The judges said he was TOO BIG in 1982 at 230-235 pounds onstage. 1983 was the last year of the small men. When Haney came back to take it in 1984 he was well into his 240's and began to push the envelope of size.

Yeah Jeff was way ahead of the game

Yeah Jeff was way ahead of the game
So was Bertil Fox.

He was sharper than Samir, had more size and fullness and the same or better aesthetics. The best combo of size and balance. Samir's legs were underwhelming.
Everything else equal, Weider liked his winners to be articulate and polite. Clearly a factor in the decisions.
-
Damn - Haney looked tiny in that video.
Haney had serious balance issues including terrible legs there.

I agree about the fullness and size , conditioning NO way

They're standing there side by side around the 47 second mark. Samir's clearly not as cut nor as full. He also has mediocre thighs both quads and hams, as can clearly be seen around 1:58. Calves pretty poor too. Thus less balance.
Fox and Zane were the two best.

FOX should have come in #1 and #2.

Yup, it's obvious to anyone who knows BB. Just more IFBB BS that too many here and elsewhere seem oblivious to.
-
Bertil Fox destroys that tiny tit "Lee Haney".

Bertil was Increadible in 1983

Bertil was Increadible in 1983
wow i have bought the same autographed pic of bertil at the 1983 olympia
-
The music during the free posedown sounds like a John Holmes movie soundtrack...but otherwise, great physiques!
-
Bertil was Increadible in 1983
He had a set of arms as large as Ronnies (that was 25-30 years ago) and I would dare say that they were even better balanced (HUGE BICEPS AND TRICEPS). They were on the record of being officially measured at 22".

Great arms and should've won (in a fair contest) but let's not get carried away not the same size as Coleman, who also big tris if not as noticable in side poses.

The Fox

The Fox
Great work Sam, by the looks of those early Photo's, Bertil was pumping iron from a VERY early age, that MM from the 1981 Pro World is Fantastic.
-
The Fox
These pics are not Bertil at his best. The first couple of pics are him at a VERY young age and the rest (against Sergio) are a VERY food deprived Bertil who was FORCED to come in thinner and thinner because of the judges and man did he lose a shitload of muscle as a result of that. Bertil was at his best and BIGGEST in 1982-1983. By the mid-late 80's he was a shadow of his former self (having lost INCHES on those arms, chest, legs, etc...).

2nd place in the mr O 1983 weighed 160lbs. Makkawy. 160lbs...

He claimed to have 18" biceps.

And Franco claimed 19"

That video is depressing. I hate to say it, but that's how bodybuilders should look. The waists are incredible. The vacuum during a front double biceps pose is a lost art. As much as I personally dislike steroids as a lifetime natural (obviously), I have to say that they really hit the best mix at that time. If bodybuilding had stayed with that look it might still have had some non periphery coverage like it used to.
