Mike Bell Passes Away
 12.15.2008

The “Mad Dog” suddenly passed away…

"Mad Dog" Mike Bell, who recently was featured in the film Bigger, Stronger, Faster, has passed away at the age of 37. Mike Bell was the brother of producer Chris Bell, and wrestled primarily in the northeast and on the west coast.

Bigger, Stronger, Faster was a study of steroids in sports, and was produced by Chris Bell. The film focused on his older brother Mike, as aspiring pro wrestler, and his younger brother Mark, who was a world-class power lifter and also did some wrestling.

411 would like to send our condolences to the family, friends and fans of Mike Bell.

Wrestler featured in movie "Bigger, Faster, Stronger" suddenly passes away

"Mad Dog" Mike Bell, who was featured in the movie "Bigger, Stronger, Faster," the heavily praised movie on anabolic steroids in sports, passed away this afternoon.  He was 37.

Bell was the older brother of producer Chris Bell.  Mike wrestled in the Northeast and the West Coast, as well as being an enhancement wrestler with the WWF.

The movie "Bigger, Stronger, Faster," was a study of steroids in sports, as well as within Bell's family in looking at his brothers, Mike, his older brother, a pro wrestler with goals of making it to the WWF, and Mark, his younger brother, who also did some pro wrestling and was also a world class powerlifter.

damn.....only 37.

What was the cause of death?

I hope it wasn't a heart attack or anything.....that would be kind of ironic in a sad way.

true

maybe steroids did kill him who knows, but we can't forget he was obese and possibly abused other drugs

plus powerlifting really strains the heart

If I remember correctly I herd Chris Bell on No Bull radio saying Mike was in rehab for a while.

Mike made it to the WWF in the end but didn't last long. He got stiff on the guy you don't get stiff on, and paid for it. Bigger, Stronger, Faster is a great movie, though.

Saturn is a jabroni.  Guys like that would have never lasted back when my old man was around.  But back then all the wrestlers took care of each other

True, it was a stupid thing to do on Saturn's part, but he was actually a good wrestler back in WCW and ECW. He had an amazing three-way match with Chavo Jr. and Eddie Guerrero one night, when he was part of The Revolution. Him and Eddie actually had a few battles back in the day, both amazing workers.

Someone gets the irony from the last sentence of Bigger, Stronger, Faster:

"For me and my brothers steroids are not the problem, they are just another side effect of being american." ::)

Neverthless, RIP, always tragic when somebody has to die that young.

In  the movie he looked like one unhealthy mofo.  In my opinion, he was a dead man walking..

In actual fact, the whole family(3 brothers, a mom and dad) were fat and disgusting....the typical American family!

Look, his mom looks like Keith. She is a heart beat away from a masssive heart attack herself.

The drug abusing power lifting brother may also be the next to die.

And for the record 'people die' they dont 'pass away'.

I suppose it is sad when a loved one dies.  However, some people have a death wish and mourning them is pointless.

Those who abuse steroids and other illicit substances know the risks.  In some cases death is inevitable.

Now on a side issue: I think the hapless powerlifter is a heart attack waiting to happen!  They abuse every substance available to them, eat like pigs, grow clinically obese and then keel over and die....

Are we meant to weep for these pathetic individuals?

The gene pool has a way of dealing with this form of sickness!

In life, we revere those who respect life.  It is a waste of tears to mourn these fat useless pigs.

They have brought all this misery onto themselves by way of an undisciplined and selfish lifestyle!

Mike, in his own way, was really crying out for help!  Unfortunately no one heard him!

Look around.  How many steroid users are screaming in the dark?

Open you eyes.  Who is listening to the fat and disgusting obese pigs, who are eating themselves to an early death?

My point is, people find there own way dying.  It is a crude form of natural selection.

How he die?

i wouldn't be surprised if he offed himself-

he and his old lady were having problems and he seem like a bit of a train wreck to begin with. maybe they split and he just ate the wrong end of a Remington.

too bad- he seemed like a genuine and ok guy too. his mom will take it hard- pretty emotional woman who cares greatly for her family.

This is what I was thinking for possible causes of his death.  Mike seemed to teeter on and off the edge of stability throughout the film.  If it wasn't suicide, you all are in an extreme delusion thinking steroids didn't at least contributing in agravating a preexisting medical condition, etc.  Healthy men don't just drop dead at 37 except in the rare medical case or two, which you all can't claim everytime this happens, which seems like every few weeks.  :-\

Also, claiming other illicit drug usage (like it trumps that of steroids) and using older living bodybuilders as solid proof for the safety of steroids are also a great delusions.  If you want to hear how you all sound, it would be like me saying that "Well Ozzy and Keith Richards are still alive so recs used in great quantities are perfectly safe if used right".  ::)

Early in the film he says, “I went from being a guy who used steroids, to a guy used steroids & pot.  And I still needed to escape reality so I started taking ecstasy, cocaine, acid, pain killers…”

He attempted suicide about 10 years ago because he couldn’t deal with his failure in the WWF.  Can you imagine trying to kill yourself over that?   ???  I feel for his family, but people really need to aim higher.

I worked with Perry Saturn at a nightclub in Saugus (called the rockpile/was a "rock club" part of "The Palace")
He was going to Killer Kowalski's school at the time (along with another guy we worked with "John" who later became his "tag-team" wrestling partner)
i never followed wrestling but Perry was a pretty tough individual, one time we had a "problem" with some New England Patriots and had to throw them out (complete with Perry using wrestling moves/looked like a "suplex" to me)
the guys were talking about calling the police and Perry said to them"your gunna look real funny in court explaining to the judge/jury how a little guy like me threw you all over the place!"
(these guys were all much taller/heavier than Perry)
needless to say they never called the police

Are you american?
Most of the american population is fat, and thousands of them die every year before reaching 40 yeras old, wothout ever touching a steroid... They eat too much, drink too much or smoke too much... Every year you get to have lots of space on an plane... but that doesn't matter because when you go to any restaurant they are there occupying space and you won't say shit to any of them... That's the side effect of being american...

Not enough to kill myself.  And certainly not if my "profession" was WWF wrestling.  Perhaps Mike’s (and your apparent) regard for WWF wrestling as a “profession” is part of the problem.  Anyone who would take that particular activity so seriously is in need of career (and maybe psychological) counseling.

To be sure, not everyone can be a brain surgeon or astronaut, but to conceptualize wrestling as a “profession”--one worth dying over is clearly the mark of someone who, at best, lacks perspective and is perhaps mentally unbalanced.  :(

As I said, people really need to aim higher.

Team,

I have some bad news. My oldest brother Mike passed away today. Details are coming at me slowly but don't be upset if I don't share them with you.
As most of you know my brother suffered from addiction and deppression. To me how he died is not important, i'd rather think of how he lived. He was careless with others feelings and with his own body at times. He didn't always do the right thing, he made one bad decision after another. But nearly everyone who has ever met my brother would never forget him. Either because he was loud, rude, funny, emotional or maybe he even kicked their ass. People could relate to Mike even though he had a crazy side to him. Nearly everyone I ever talked to, who knew Mike was touched by him in one way or another. Even people who never met him who saw Bigger, Stronger, Faster were touched and effected by him.

I loved and idolized my big brother he will be missed but never forgotten!

RIP Big Brother I know you fought your heart out to get better.

thats to bad...... i remeber from the movie his dad kind of forcasted a suicide, it would be tough though being that old having given all of yoru life up to that point for wrestling and not making it happen. the feeling of having no real world skills for an actual job must have been heavy, But really till there is an offical report on what the cause of death was there is no point in wondering although wiht that post his brother put up saying how the cause is not important plus the dads prediction all point to a sad ending

Whether it was steroids, recreational drugs, obesity, suicide, or whatever, we are all going the same direction sooner or later, one way or another, brothers in death.  That is why, for those who might be wondering, it's bad form to speak ill of the dead.  Ask not for whom the bell tolls.  It tolls for thee.

My condolences to the Bell family.

Dude, he's writing about his brother for Christs Sake.   To Mark, he very well may be a hero and a victim both..

When I watched the movie, my wife and I both made the same comment---Mike was a trainwreck waiting to happen.   He mentioned illicit drug use above and beyond anabolic steroids more than once in the movie.  He also mentioned "getting clean".     Its a bad situation.

I think we can all say that Mike was showing signs of depression on Bigger, Stronger, Faster.  He was obviously a terrible wrestler & actor.  So it seemed pretty apparent when he was 'being real' in the interview, he was really in a very bad place ticking down.

Dude I hope you write a book.  My buddy could contribute a lot of stories.  He said Fritz was cheap and screwed some guys out of their territories around Texas.  His karma was family tragedy.  He said Bill Watts was decently fair.  my buddy had a gimmick to come out with a chain around his neck being led my midgets dressed up as altar boys.  My buddy was 6'4 300 lbs at the time.  Bill watts wouldnt go for it.  He said Kerry Von Erich was so high and zoned out one night they had to carry him in and then Ric flair had to make him look good and wrestle him for a 60 min match.

Pro wrestler Mike 'Mad Dog' Bell found dead at 37
The wrestler's struggle with substance abuse was featured in the documentary 'Bigger, Stronger, Faster.'
Associated Press

Mike "Mad Dog" Bell, a former professional wrestler whose struggle with substance abuse was featured in the documentary "Bigger, Stronger, Faster," has died. He was 37.

Bell was found Sunday at a Costa Mesa live-in rehabilitation facility, his family said.

An autopsy was conducted but investigators couldn't immediately determine the cause of death, said Dan Akin, a supervising deputy at the Orange County coroner's division. The coroner is awaiting the results of toxicology tests, he said.

Chris Bell, whose 2008 documentary examines the steroid use of his two brothers, said Mike Bell had long battled with his addictions to prescription painkillers and alcohol.

"He was always wrestling, he was a personal trainer, he was always pushing his body to the max," Chris Bell told the Orange County Register.

"You can't really blame wrestling, but it's kind of the lifestyle," he said. "You have a couple of painkillers to get to the next match, have a couple drinks night to night and it gets out of hand."

Bell wrestled on World Wrestling Entertainment's "Monday Night Raw" as a "jobber," a fighter who takes falls to promote others.

"Although Mr. Bell was never under a WWE contract, WWE extends its deepest condolences to the Bell family," the organization said.

Why do people always insist that we “respect the dead”--especially someone who is recently dead?  Isn’t it more important to respect people when they are alive and can actually appreciate it?

If a guy is an asshole, a drug abuser, a body builder, or muscle escort (or all of these things) and he suddenly kicks the bucket why should we suddenly show respect for him?  If the guy doesn’t show respect for other people (or himself) when he is alive why should the living respect him now that he is dead?

I’m not showing respect for anyone in death that I didn’t respect in life.  8)

You dont have to show respect, but why would you show disrespect on a forum where this guys brother might possibly see it?  Mark Bell (the younger brother who owns supertraining gym in sacramento) is actually a really nice guy and I'm sure he reads this forum from time to time.  It just seems kind of an asshole thing for you to be saying these kinds of things.

Your post reminds me of a situation that occurred several years ago on a different board.  A bodybuilder/escort croaked and several guys were making catty comments about him on an escort site that he used to frequent.  His sister, of all people, logged on to say that she and her family were very distressed by the nasty messages and admonished the posters to stop their hostile commentaries.  Apparently, she found her way to the site by looking at his computer.   Alas, her comments were not welcome.

Why, various people wondered, would she (and members of her family) be trolling around reading messages on an escort board?  Didn’t she have better things to do with her time than trying to police the conversations of people she did not know and would never meet?  The fact is her brother was a whore and no John was going to suddenly sit up and respect him just because he recently died.  Her concern for her brother would have been better shown by steering him out of escorting and other self destructive behaviors.  Was trolling message boards really the best way to handle her grief?

I felt bad for her loss and the flack she took on that board, but what did she expect to get from a bunch of johns?  Real sympathy? ???

None of this is necessarily a reflection on Mike Bell, but it does represent a potentially similar dynamic.

We have a saying where I come from,  “when someone shows you who they are . . . believe them.”  ::)

I dont think Mark Bell would come on here looking for sympathy, and I am damn sure he knows his brother had issues, but what do you gain by saying negative comments about his dead brother, of whom you probably knew nothing about??  By the way, your comparison of this to the escorting site is totally irrelevant.
