Title: Have you ever bought a bodybuilding magazine?
Post by: Method101 on December 15, 2008, 02:13:49 PM
I hate to say it, but years ago when i was getting into training etc, i didn't know wtf i was doing when it came to lifting weights but i knew i wanted to be strong/big... i saw flex magazine on the shelf with titles like "3 exercises for Big arms" and a picture of some huge guy on the cover and i thought that all i had to do was use the exercises and my arms would get like the guy on the cover(hahaha).

so i got a few issues of Flex and i admit, i did learn how to lift weights properly, but after a while i got fed up reading about "gossip" Etc. and i discovered that the internet is far better source of information on training/nutrition. lol i remember reading about Mike Matarazzo before he had heart problems.

It never once occured to me when i bought them how gay and wierd it must have seemed for a chubby 12 year old to be buying Flex magazine,..  :D

when i was 13  stopped lifting weights completly, i was fed up of getting hardly any results and i realised that all the "pros" were on steroids, but atleast i lost all the fat i was carrying..

I just started lifting weights again about 1.5years ago.

The End ;D

Actually, FLEX and Muscle & Fitness are great magazines when it comes to being a source of training and dietary knowledge. Granted they have the same pitch / format every time (grow gargantuan guns, get cannonball delts etc), but they do tell you the proper way to lift weights as well as give advice on form, rep range and so on. Some of the guys here keep saying that they don't talk about juice, but how could they? And most of the times they always talk about how the pros have elite genetics and have a look only a handful of us can attain and that too, only with a lot of time, effort and discipline.

And while the internet can be great for the amount of information it contains, you also have to bear in mind that a lot of it is by people who are absolutely clueless and inexperienced. There are some guys here who do the same - act and give advice like they know shit when they don't.  Up until the mid 90s, before the internet really kicked off, the mags were the best way to keep up with bodybuilding as well as getting advice on lifting and nutrition. Along with Arnold's encyclopedia, of course :D

Does American Curves count? What about Muscle & Fitness Hers? Oxygen? ("It's for my girlfriend.;)")

I'd be very surprised if anyone on Getbig hasn't bought a few bb mags in their time. Ironman was my favorite.
Then it became clear that they were all literally product "catalogs." The routines, etc... are just fillers.

Seeing a muscular man on the cover and then buying it is not by "accident".  :D

Because they'd ring up the magazine, look at it and say, "You want to look like that?"  :D

I used to buy them after I got outta high school, I only knew football training not bodybuilding and getting ripped. Followed the nutrition plans and training programs for about 6 months, got ok results. Then I wised up and found some real bodybuilders who knew what they were doing and haven't bought one again.
