Title: Abcess Strategies.
Post by: DIVISION on December 18, 2008, 09:36:57 AM

I notice alot of people like to cut open their abcesses and drain them.

When I've had swelling from localized infections, I simply let my body fight it off and let it heal in time.

If your immune system is strong enough, there's no need to cut or drain.

Whereas if you cut it open, you'll leave a scar and possible muscle damage aesthetically.

You cut open a muscle, it's going to look deformed when it grows back.

Some of you meathead bodybuilders need to think about these things before you slice and dice.   :-X

I agree.  Mine have always gone away with time.  Hopefully I'll never have one bad enough to have cut open.

Also, if it get's that bad, wouldn't it make the most sense to first try to draw out the infected fluid with a syringe and then let it drain before cutting?

antibiotic shot + oral anti biotics.   sat in bed for like a week with a heating pad on my quad.

I shot some prop in my booty and kept hitting scar tissue, so I foolishly did not inject all the way in and did a pretty shallow injection. Sometimes prop can swell me up a little and my booty had a big red lump for over a week... it scared the shit out of me, especially after seeing abscess pictures. I just let my body fight it off and it was fine.

If it were more painful and more dangerous I would have gotten it checked out and took antibiotics. My mom's an ER nurse and said it wasn't anything to worry about. I just worry that someone would rough house and maybe give me a charley horse or something after injecting and end up with a hematoma or something. I was so fucking paranoid. But seriously, don't operate on yourself. It's tempting to try to drain it but don't slice it open or anything. Beef up your your antibodies and it'll get fought off just fine. Let the professionals do the operating if need be. :-X

People are quick to blame dirty gear when alot of those are sterile abcesses from guys shooting too much gear over and over in the same quadrant.

This is also very true. Sterile injection practices need to be performed each and every time.

I know that I wouldn't want to risk all my years of hard work and dedication all because I was being sloppy while pinning.

It'll depend on how long you let it fester. Could be oral antibiotics, IV antibiotics, draining & repacking it.

I am always on anti biotics so I think that might help a little.  Sites that have swollen up due to cheap UG gear go away within about a week.  I had one scare about two years ago and Ajr helped me through it, it eventually went down and everything was fine.

What bodybuilder slices open their abcesses? Aspirating with a needle yes, but never heard or seen a bb cut themselves with a scalpel or whatever. If you're talking about a doc doing it I think the best advice is to let the doc decide if it's necessary.

Exactly. I've known guys who've let shit grow for a week or more. Then they end up having minor surgery to have the fucker drained & then they go through weeks of repacking.

I have a buddy who's had to get a few abscesses drained. The way he talks about it is the same way someone talks when they get a common cold or something.. he just shrugs it off. Hopefully he doesn't run into severe complications one day. Just one nasty abscess requiring surgery would have scared me straight if I were him!

I got some bad swelling from Trenax amps, but I let it heal on its own.

You should know your body well enough to know whether it's getting better or getting worse.

On YouTube.com, I saw a few videos of lifters who were aspirating but I've seen photos of lifters who sliced open a muscle to drain.

I would question a doc who wanted to cut open a muscle unless he was actually cutting out dead tissue.
