"All technicians, taking it too seriously"
-King Arnold
-
Everyone says that Arnold wasn't any where near of his 74' form.... but who on that stage was?
Mentzer and Zane were really overated considering they were the fav to win that year.
yip yip

when are you competing Alex?
When oil, speedos are not a requirement.
-
Platz was featured more than any other in that film because he was the only "Arnold's ass kisser" that year.
Theres was a moment with cameras around, when Tinerino flexed his abs and told Arnold "what do you think"?
Arnold looked intimidated as Tinerino was the sharpest that show all he could say was "looking good "
Too bad they didnt show that on the film.
-
I sensed a lot of bitterness and resentment from you, after your brother in law Glen competed.
He married Flexington's sister?
-
Platz was definitely impressive in 1981 and 1982, but again, like many (Casey Viator, Danny Padilla, Bertil Fox, Robby Robinson) he was overlooked.
-
did anyone else catch the elbow wrestling match between arnold and roger walker during the back double bicep comparison?pretty funny
-
Who is that guy that's accompanying Arnold everywhere at that show? Kind of reminds me of a Yes Man, if I'm to be totally honest. And the JB thing just wasn't that funny-you can tell Arnold is not feeling his best and is trying to compensate elsewhere.

all that 'psych out' stuff regarding Arnold is overblown.
Most of his fellow competitors were not affected by it, especially in 1980

Enter Mike Mentzer. ;D

Oh yes, the fellow Arnold could not look in the eye.

Mentzer was barking like a little dog and Arnold knew it.

I'm telling you, much of that Arnold psych out malarkey did work on lesser competitors...not the Zanes, Sergios, Yortons, etc....why did he not 'psych out' the only three fellows who bested him in competition?

Now, I assume this is the "Arnold could not look in the eye" pic you're referring to...

Of course to Arnold all he hears from Mike is blah blah blah...you're the best...blah blah blah. ;D
It's a moment in time where Arnold just brushes Mike's comments off his shoulder and puts Mike in his place followed by a "five" from Samir - who I'm sure approved of Arnold's OWNING. ;)

The fact would be that if not for Ben Weider's interaction, Mentzer would have taken A's head off of his shoulders.
And THAT was written in the 1980 M&F contest report.
Nuff said.

That was back in the day when competitors could actually wear street clothes on the day of competition and even backstage. What were they using for tan back then? And why do competitors looked totally washed out in today's comps unless they paint themselves black or are black and the competitors back then looked fine despite being much lighter?
-

One: It did work on Zane, as you can see in Frank crack up at a joke Arnold told him when onstage.
Two: None of it worked on the three you mentioned, at that point in time, due to Arnold not having that part of himself "in shape" yet. Arnold admits to losing these games in 'Education of a Bodybuilder' when he talks about Sergio walking around in his butchers coat backstage, ignoring Arnold. Right before the two went onstage, Sergio says "Check out these lats, baby" and flexed. Arnold defeated himself right then and there, he admitted.
Later Arnold would learn how to defeat their minds as much as their physiques too. He never competed against Yorton again, I've already given the Zane example- though Arnold beat him onstage a number of times after the encounter of Zane besting him. And Sergio, I don't have any examples of, but in the long run Arnold didn't need to have any, since Arnold won over Sergio many times anyway.
Arnold did psych out his opponents many times over. From Lou at the breakfast prior to "Pumping Iron," telling Zane jokes onstage, or not looking at Metzner and getting under his skin as a last minute tactic to rattle him. It worked for Arnold.
