summer of 1980, you don't see upper bodies that thick even on today's wrestlers.

I saw Tony Atlas back in his prime in 1985 at George Eirmmans gym in Vegas. He was there along with the Road Warriors, (Animal & Hawk, ) and Hulk Hogan. This is back when Hulk Hogan claimed he had 24" arms. When Tony walked into the gym he dwarfed Hulk Hogan, aswell as both the Road Warriors.Even George Eiferman said that is the biggest man I have ever seen.I asked Tony if he thought Hulk Hogans arms were 24" , he said hell no.Tony told me, why dont you get a tape measure and ask him to measure them.Tony said I bet you $100 he wont let you measure his ams.So I went to the front desk, and got a tape meaure, and walked up to Hulk Hogan and asked himn if I could measure his arm.He said "dont bother me when I am working out'.lol.He wasnt even training he was just talking to some guy by gthe locker room.Tony Atlas just laughed and said I told you so.Tony then said, Hulk Hogans arms arent near 24" they are probably more like 21".At the time Tony Atlas was right around 285llbs, he is 6'2" had a 30" waist, a 60" chest, 23 1/2" arms, and 31" thighs.I remember this quite well because I was only 17 at the time, and just started training.Tony Atlas was one of my mentors, and some one I looked up to.Evertime he would come into town to wrestle, I would see him at George Eifermans gym, heck all the wrestlers training there. The gym was only like 1500sq ft, but it was really old school & hard core. All the equiptment was old, the dumbells were rusty, and the machines were chain driven Nautulus.
I will say this if Tony Atlas was about 22 years old now, he would definatly be a future Mr Olympia, he has amazing genetics. He was 285;bs back then using very lil anabolics, and getting 3 hours sleep a night. He said he would wrestle, then go drinking & chase girls til 4-5 in the morning, then go workout at 8 oclock in the morning. Then wrestle again that night.Imagine if Tony used GH, Insulin, Primo, Winny, Anavar, Cell Tech, Nitro Tech, and Hydroxycut?????????? man he would be a monster, lol .I was just joking about the Cell Tech, Nitro Tech, and Hydroxycut, you got to laught at Muscletech, lol.But just imagine if Tony Atlas had access to todays tchnology, and ate 6-8 meals a day, and rested??????? He would be a total freak. The only anabolics Tony used was Test and D-Ball, and not much of each.He told me the doses, and I was wow. Most guys today use more in one week then he used in 2 months.I talked to Tony last month, he still can bench over 500 lbs, and he is 54 years old.

Unfortunately Tony was there before the 80s wave of publicity and money in wrestling, and didn't have any gimmicks. Hulk was a big guy but nowhere near the same calibre physique as Tony.

Great story. In Hogan's prime, before all the surgeries (back surgeries, knee surgeries, hip replacement, neck fusion), he was a legit 6'6" guy who weighed between 305-330 pounds. His arms were supposedly 22" at their LARGEST, which I have NO problems believing. Today Hogan is about 6'3"-6'3.5" and his arms were actually measured at 20" recently on a talk show. He's a shadow of his former self (height wise), but he is more cut than he was back in the late 70's-early 90's.

Tony Atlas was a true monster.  One of my favorite old time wrestlers.  He's still super strong and jacked too.  Those old videos bring back so many memories.  That's the same card at Shea that had sammartino wrestle Larry Zybysko in a steel cage

Polychronopolous , the truth is back then they didnt have the anabolics they have today.Just look at the Mr Olympia competitors from 1983-1985, most of them were right around 200lbs .You had Samir Banout, Lee Labrada,Chris Dickerson, Frank Zane, plus many more. All had great physiques, but by todays standards would be considered small. If those guys were on the drugs, and the technology they had today, they would have been alot bigger and alot better developed.
Back then they didnt have the anabolics, technology, supplements,or gyms they have today.Tony would tell me he would go into a town to Wrestle, and half the time they couldnt even find a gym to train at.Back in the early 1980's there werent as many gyms, and if there were they didnt have good equiptment or even heavy dumbells. We take for granted these days, how many gyms we can chose from. When I started training in the 1985, I had 3 gyms to chose from in Vegas, and only one of them was a bodybuilding gym, the other 2 were fitness clubs ,that had racketball, & basketball courts.I had to drive 45 minutes after school to go train at George Eifermans gym.I was a senoior in high school , so when I got out of school I would go train.
My point is back then they didnt have good bodybuilding gyms, protein powder, or even good hormones for bodybuilders to use.Thats why the bodybuilders looked good but werent very big.Today the "so-called" natural guys are as big as the pro bodybuilders were back then.Today's most Mr.USA, or Nationals competitors, would kill the old IFBB pro from back then.
I talked to Tony, and he is a very honest and straight forward man.The only things he used was the 2 things I mentioned earlier, thats it.What else was he going to use??????????? There wasnt much else out there. Just imagine if he used GH, Insulin, or even Primo. He would have been a monster.

They had better anabolic steroids back then, the steroid situation was better. The anabolic steroids you mention were available in the 70s. They all had been developed by then... in the 60s actually. No new steroids were developed after that, pretty much. Winstrol released in '62, Anavar in '64 and so on.

The point about GH and insulin is valid but other than that the drug situation was better.

Yes these anabolics were indeed invented, but alot of people didnt know about them.Plus the availability was a little difficult.I talked to Tony Atlas, and alot of bodybuilders from the early 1980's, and they didnt know about Winstrol , Anavar, and Primobolan.I know some of the IFBB pros did, but not all of them.Plus the dosages they took were very ,very low.Back in the 80's 500 mg of test a week, was alot.Plus the knowledge of steroids wasnt as in depth as it is today. In my post, I didnt mean the steroids werent invented, they just werent much knowledge about them. They didnt have the internet, and the few people "in the know" didnt tell others.I started training in 1985, and  you didnt hear alot about Winstrol, Anavar, Primobolan, and GH was something everybody thought Arnold took that why his jaw was bigger.
When I trainined at George Eifermans gym, there was a good amount of guys who used anabolics, I would find syringes in the bathroom all  guys used was Testosterone, D-Ball, Finajet, and Anadrol 50, thats it.
Most of the guys would who used Anadrol 50, would talk about it giving nose bleeds, from squatting heavy.
Guys Like Tony Atlas who trained in the early to mid 1980's and alot of them didnt know about Winstrol, Anavar, or Primobolan. Most of them just took testosterone, and D-Ball tabs.Plus they didnt use as much as they take today. Like I said before, 500 mg of testosterone a week was a good amount back then.I have talked to alot of pro bodybuilders today, and its not on uncommon for them to use 2000-3000-of mg of test per week, even more.

a 1980's bodybuilder getting ready for a show, drug use
Testosterone, D-Ball, Finjet, and Maybe Winstrol ( if they knew about it)

Todays bodybuilder getting ready for a show
First 6 weeks Sustanon 250, Primobolan, Insulin, GH, Decca, or Eq, Winstrol, Anavar, Clen, Cytomel,ECA stack,IGF1
The last weeks for a show
Fast acting testosterone like Propinate, or Suspension,Primobolan,  GH, Anvar,Winstrol, Cytomel, ECA stack, IGF1,Masterone,then the last week, Cytodren, and a diuretic
If it wasnt for people like Dan Duchaine, who was a human geuiny pig bodybuilders wouldnt know what they know now.Back then alot of bodybuilders had no clue what they were doing.

Danimal77  You are right there was some freaks out there, but not nearly as many as there is today.Back in the mid 1980's a 180- 190lb bodybuilder could hold his own at the Mr Olympia, but today they would get killed.
Today if you dont weigh atleast 215lb-225 lbs, you most likely wont make the top 10.David Henry who won the 202 & under Mr O  looked awesome got 15th place in the open class.Today the average Mr Olympia competitor weighs between, 230-240lbs.All the top guys weigh 235lbs plus.Dexter 235lbs, Jay 270lbs, Phil Heath 230lbs,Dennis Wolf 270lbs.,and Tony Freeman 275lbs.

It's scary how much height Tony lost. He was once a legit 6'2" and is being dwarfed by a legit 6'1" Mark Henry there. Same thing happened to Hogan (who went from 6'6" to 6'3"), Piper (who went from 6'1.5"-5'9"), Billy Graham (6'4"-5'10") and the list goes on. Wrestling DESTROYS the body and all the surgeries to repair the body take INCHES off of their height.  :'(
