I think it's just that we have seen a lot of impressive "x-weeks out" pictures of various competitors over the years, which seemingly show great improvements. Then, on contest day, the competitor looks about the same as he always has on-stage. Dennis James, Phil Heath, Alex Azarian, and others come to mind. Fair or not, many have become somewhat jaded to these gym shots.

That said, Marcus does look really good in these pics.
