Title: Q for ONLYME -- Neck training, Barbarians
Post by: MarvinEderFan on January 03, 2009, 11:26:31 AM
I'm a big fan of the Barbarian Brothers. As most people know they were big on training their necks.

But just how prominent were their necks?

I am considering buying a neck harness...will that suffice for neck training?

Thanks bro.

After Keith measured their necks, the Barbarian Brothers, Nolan Ryan, Larry Hagman, and Pat Benetar hopped in Onlyme's 1982 T-bird for a quick lunch at the 4 seasons before a Charity dinner at Madonna's house.

The specific neck training should only be used if its lagging seriously behind other body parts and shrugs should help em out but the basket thing is junk I have tried it and its awkward as hell, you have to warm your neck up like crazy before and its a serious neck injury waiting to happen....I would def. never buy one or use it at a gym ever again...

Yes it is for people who have pencil necks and who never train them.  It is normal for people with this affliction to say this.  Also its pretty common for people who can't develop their neck to say things like this.  Man I am happy as hell I was never one of those types.

I love these.  Lets me see.  I have met Nolan Ryan yes, Larry Hagman no (but Bill Daly was a good friend), Pat Benetar no (but did a commercial with Whitney Houston), not a 1982 T-Bird but did have a beautiful 1967 convertible Firebird and I hate the Four Seasons here but like Roy's and never been to Madonna's house for a charity party but I did go to go to some fancy house in Boca Raton for a charity affair.  I think I covered it.  Give me some more I love talking about this stuff.  Oh I never measured the twins neck but mine here is 21".  Lets see a pic of yours. ::)

Damn straight, show some respect people!

Yes a Gillette Commercial I did with Don Ross not Liz Taylor and I never did anything for the SPCA but alot for the Special Olympics.  Isn't that where I first saw you compete my jap friend

Thanks for the replies Dodger and OnlyME.

Obviously training the back of the neck is easy. You lean forwards and extend you neck up and down.

How about the other way? Bending the neck forwards? Can this be trained easily with a neck harness too? And basically, is a neck harness all I need?

I read One of them/they (forgot which) did 265 for 8 on barbell curls with less cheat than that.

On NO BULL Peter mentions David first getting Weiders attention when he was quite young and he did a spontaenous 50x150 lbs on DB rows. OBviously both brothers got a lot stronger later.

TommyW, can you say something about HOW to train neck?

Will using a harness alone give me the results?

IMO... using a harness alone can give you a huge muscular neck, BUT with a machine or two, you can take your neck development to absurd levels.

My original/1st harness workouts:

1) Standing neck raises 5 x 20. Place your hands against a wall and keep your feet approx 4 feet from the wall (as if you're being searched by a cop).
2) Reverse neck raises 5 x 20. For this movement you MUST be able to lean backwards at approx a 25-30 degree angle. You will have to hold a rope or a bar that is attached to the wall so you are not pulled over backwards. Awkward at first, I know.
3) Flat bench neck pump reps 5 x 50, slow and controlled. Lay flat on a bench with your head hanging completely over the edge of the bench and simply do neck raise reps, slow and controlled. Then flip over so you are facing the ground and do reverse neck raises, slow and controlled. This is a very short ROM movement but it helps with the pump.
4) Giant set those 4 movements.

With that harness routine, my neck was 20 - 20 1/4' at a bodyweight of 220. Later with machines, more weight, anabolics and an evil plan to have the biggest neck in the world, my neck taped at 22 5/8" at a bodyweight of 272.  ;D True story.

I trained my neck since I was a sophmore in high school.  Heavy training came later though when I started using heavier weight.  My traps were very big and tend to blend in with my neck pretty good anyway.  It just seemed to grow.  My arms, neck and calves were all 21".  I didn't really train it for any reason but just to train it.  I would do it sometimes when I needed to rest cause I could sit down.

I just saw a video of me taken back in the mid 90's with my daughters.  I am going to get it digitized so I can post some of it.  I am in a tank top and it amazes me my neck and shoulders in it.  I veins going across my shoulders and I was huge.  I didn't even realize I was that big but that video makes me look pretty good.
