Title: Rashad Evans talks tactics
Post by: Dreadlord on January 05, 2009, 03:48:27 AM
Rashad Evans is getting a lot of heat because of his showboating during his UFC light heavyweight championship fight with Forrest Griffin at UFC 92. In case you missed it, after Griffin threw a flurry of punches, Evans shook 'em off, blew him a kiss and then grabbed his crotch.

He explains what he was thinking via fightline.com:

"When [Griffin] got off his little flurry on me, and he gave me everything he had, I was like, 'Oh man. I've seen every trick in the book,'" Evans said. "And I knew that there was nothing he could do to really hurt me. I felt all his power, and I was like, 'Man, I've got this. I've got this now.' And I wanted to let him know that [he] can't hurt me. It's going to be a long night from here on out.' It was just a little fun. Me and Forrest were sitting there smiling. I'd hit him with a good shot, and he'd give me a little smile or something. We were just going back and forth. When you're in the gym or something like that, it's just some stuff we go on with a little trash-talking and stuff like that. It's nothing personal. It's just getting into the fight."

Personally, I don't think it's a big deal. If Evans wants to blow kisses, grab his crotch or do cart wheels in the cage, I don't really care as long as he's giving 100 percent and puts on exciting fights.

But, by doing things like this he's really shooting himself in the foot if he wants wants to be liked by all and respected as a professional, which it seems he does.

In interviews Evans comes off as an intelligent thoughtful person. He wears suits to press conferences, he's well spoken, and he refrains from expletive-filled rants like his boss Dana White. Outside of the cage, he does everything right.

But, inside the cage he does Sanford and Son impersonations, crotch grabs and taunts his opponents. And this is the version of Evans 90 percent of MMA fans are basing their impressions of him on.

In nipple-tweaking news, you may have noticed that Evans didn't do his customary Team Jackson nipple tweak before his fight with Griffin. Evans and his teammate Keith Jardine had some pretty funny things to say about how they thought the lack of nipple tweaking affected Evans' performance.

From MMA Weekly:

According to a superstitious teammate, that's why Evans lost the first two rounds against Griffin. "I didn't do the nipple tweak," said the UFC light heavyweight titleholder. "Jardine pointed it out. He said, 'Know what? I think that's maybe why you started off slow, man. You didn't get the nipple tweak in.'

"That's exactly what I get," added Evans. "I realized after the fight started that I didn't do the nipple tweak. I was like, man, what's going on? I lost my mojo."
