For the last 8 years the printing presses have been going non-stop..
US currency is going to lose a lot of it's value soon...Might as well put in extra money in hard assets

the change is that he's putting a trillion in the pockets of Americans with stim checks and 3-4 million new jobs.
bush and paulson, on the other hand, put a trillion into the banker's hands and they are legally NOT TELLING US where the $ is going.
The $ has to be i nterjected into economy - both parties are donig it. I personally perfect where obama is sending the $ - to americans

Yes, but his plans call for 1.2 trillion this year. Am not even sure wether I am for or against his stimulus package actually. Just wanted to see want some of my fellow Getbiggers thought on this.

Come on 240... did you praise Bush when he did the rebates? Or bash it then, only to praise it now. It will not stimulate the economy because all people are going to do is pay down debt they already have. It will make the bankers and creditors happy....hmmm, wonder who Obama is trying to make happy?

Hey bro i like what Obama is doing...
However, I don't think you understand the extend of what transpired in the past few months...The credit market were literally frozen, due to their Lehman collapse, and a 65 billion dollar money market fund breaking the Buck...This lead to runs on Money market funds, where large corps borrowed in the short run..Those bank bail outs were very much needed, since there was virtually no liquidity left in the system
The banking system was on the verge of callapse
it's not like the market would correct itself in this situation

I'll take that as a yes. Did you vote for him because you believe his liberal ideas and/or because of the color of his skin? I'm curious.
I can tell you one thing, proposing to tax more to give to people to get them to spend again is pretty stupid. Ever notice how every time he speaks the stocks drop? His pick for CIA director is just one of many stupid decisions we will see.
Rob, taxing me and giving trillions that my grandkids will pay for is not a good solution. There are jobs, but people don't want to work them. People became too good to work in certain areas and would rather stay at home, collect federal aid and bitch at the government. Bottom line, you don't work you don't eat. You don't like it, join the military. Decent pay, good benefits. There is always a way to get by.

That is one of the big problems with the way the rates are now. . . . . they can't go any lower. . . . so if this doesn't work it would be impossible to increase "liquidity" from the rates. This shit better work or we could be in big trouble.

Opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one.
The changeover from the worst administration in history can't happen fast enough, the economy's in a tailspin with Bush and others having been big contributors to problems, now having done precious little to date to effectively address anything. The Paulson and other bailout monies were poorly spent.
-

I too my bush check with a smile, and i'll take my obama check with a smile.
these 2 were GOOD things - we got more of our damn $ back.
on the other hand, giving 2 trillion bucks to banks - to secretly use as they pleased - was some serious bullshit. Bush did it 3 months ago swearing it was that or collapse/martial law (yse, some congressman said he used those words if it didn't pass)
3 months later, we're still economically fvcked. If they had given that 2 trillion to americans, you bet your ass it'd be being spent right now.
-
the thing is the Banks aren't using this money to lend..They are using it to clean up there balance sheet, or de-leverage or whatever the new term is..They Have a bunch of worthless securities on their balance sheets
-

Poorly spent money, there were no stipulations to make them loosen lending instead they've used it internally.
-
No oversight on the bank bailout was most definetly a mistake. Seriously, supposedly you have the brightest people in america working in D.C. How the fuck do you give out billions of dollars and not think about making sure the money is used properly?

It's hard to say rob what Americans would do with that money..Considering the fact there have seen there home values fall drastically, and there 401(K)'s values plummet...My guess is they would put the money under the mattress, where it wouldn't stimulate the economy..You know the multiplier effect..
Another guess would be americans would use that money to pay down debt

but why only hold Bush personally accountable? The only bump in the road was the Republicans who voted it down the first time, but the Democrats ram-rodded it thru. So why not share the blame?
It's as if everyone is assigning so much blame to only the Bush admin, that everything will magically change when they are out....which is complete bullshit.....but it's what got Obama elected.

The republicans were there the last 8 years, you can't escape that with your myopic view of the world. The republicans are part of the problem right now, doing squat to effectively deal with the crisis, thus the economy is still deteriorating further. Bush and admin were the dumbest fucks on record, Obama is clearly bringing in smart competent people to take over the insane asylum. Unfortunately it's late in the game after so many years of this poor management.

if they pay down debt, then the banks would have $ to spend.
if they spend even 10% of it on consumer goods (and you know the stupid half of the population would run to the mall with it) we'd see a tremendous bump, just as we did last summer. That econ stim package from bush - the second tax return - was an awesome bump for 3 months.

Pick a president based on the slogan "Change"? Good choice. Let me guess, he has charisma and has a nice smile?
I'm really glad that my kids, grand kids and I will pay for the stimulus that Obama wants. Here's an idea, cut domestic spending which is a huge part of the budget. I have no problem drawing down troops in Iraq but the money we piss away here for illegals and able bodied welfare recipients, among other things, is costing much more money and has been for a long time. Cut off all aid and services to illegals, force welfare recipients who can work to work at least 40 hours a week (then the government can cut some of that spending while still providing aid) and you could see better results.
-
Helloooo.........shit didn't start hitting the fan until the Dems took control of the senate 2 years ago.
The dollar was steadily weakening since 2001, Joe.
This shit doesn't happen in a vaccuum. We borrowed a lot of $ for this war, and suddenly the chinese aren't lending it to us anymore.
-
Sometimes our legal system boogles my mind. There are literally thousands of illegals in the California prisons that I am paying for with my tax dollars! Yet we have other hippie americans protesting that it is not right to just deport these people for commiting crimes!?
WTF ???
-
there needs to be another stimulus package, this is simple economics.
Should it go to the banks, to hoard?
Or should it go to Americans in the form of a check and new job creation?
They're going to make one no matter what - you have to jumpstart thigns or face a death spiral of supply/demand.
Obama wants to give the $ to americans - bush wants to give it to corps.
Does anyone here really wnat to bypass a 500 check and 100 to 400,000 new jobs in your state, so that Citibank can add another 300 bill to its coffers?
-
Just to make it simple to understand for those who don't:
-Bush administration: some of the dumbest people available(ie condi and rummy in influential positions); collectively mediocre, like Bush. Expertise only in getting re-elected.
-Obama: some of the smartest people.
-Spending now: established economics, universally agreed as necessary after the mistakes of the depression.
It really is that simple.
-
I'll ask again, why is the whole stimulus to the banks package ONLY be blamed on Bush? The congress and senate pushed it thru. Democrats leading the charge, yet it's ALL Bush's fault. It's this idiotic view of "President has all the power" that allows the real turds in Washington (Congress and Senate) to keep getting re-elected even thought their only interest is the pork barrel politics of their own state.

Exactly, Bush proposes but Congress votes. They are to blame.

Seriously. All the ESL spending, Medical benefits, and public school spending we pay for those assholes is eating at the CA budget big time.

EXCELLENT POST. Everybody is looking at Obama as being some kind of savior, sorry ain't going to happen. The president is not the sole purpose of why our country is in the shitter, people don't realize that congress makes this country tick. They make laws, they pass legislation. People put all the blame on Bush and his administration. Not fair, but that is just my opinion.

The bailout to the banks was heavily favored by democrats, who have the majority in congress (particularly liberal dems). Bush signed off on it so he is responsible as well, but the democrats are mostly to blame for poor oversight of the financial bailout money...our tax money! We should all be pissed. It was the fiscally conservative republicans and some of the blue dog democrats that opposed the financial bailout in that form.
Barney Frank and paulson are the brains behind these bailouts, place most of the blame on them. Honestly, Bush is not smart enough to have orchestrated this failure by himself. I do fault him because a good leader picks smart and experienced people to listen too. The president cannot be everything. Hopefully Obama will choose more wisely.
-
in the end, the only real "change" that occured is that a black man is now in charge.
Too bad people are now going to figure out that it doesnt mean he 's more or even as qualified/capable/apropriate for the job as a white man...
It was all about electing A BLACK MAN for the fun of it and nothing else. Everything that has been said about the stupidity of those who voted for him just because he's black has already been verified and it will only get worse, cause soon people will understand that BECAUSE he's black he's LESS qualified for the job than a white man.

barney frank has been calling for investemnts in infructructure as an economic stimulus and also somethin the usa should have done anyway for yearssss... since that bridge collapsed in the mid west somwhere a few years ago.

$500-600 stimulus checks to individuals didn't work to stimulate the economy last time and there is zero reason to think the result will be different this time.
Giving rebate checks to people who don't pay federal taxes is also a bad idea, those people will not provide the kind of economic stimulation we need.
A few General ideas:
Cut corporate taxes (we have the second highest corporate tax rate in the world). Make some tax cuts permanent to boost confidence, inject $ where its needed but with mandatory oversight, transparency and direction; cut trade deficits; stop pushing welfare/dependence programs; handle illegal immigration and provide a path to citizenship for immigrants who are productive; invest in infrastructure and new technology; increase nuclear power; change the culture of entitlement the younger generation has.

your pretty mcuh just promoting the same ideas which bush and co have been preaching.
"trickle down economics" is a nice theory. in the real world it doesnt work.
listen to alan greenspans last testimony. he came to the conclusion, finally, that the free market is flawed and trickle down doesnt work. why? because in that economic theory, the issue of the tendencies of humans is not taken into account.
the idea is thatless money payed by the top, equals less money payed by the bottom.
NO.
doesnt work that way, not with HUMANS at the top.
when the top pay less, that means they make more. it doesnt mean the bottom pays less.
-
The only problem with infrastructure spending is that its more of a mid-long term investment...but still wise. I'm sure that Barney Frank has good and bad ideas, the financial bailout in that form was a bad idea. The conservative repubs and blue dog dems tried to warn us back in the fall.
I will wait to see the details of the Obama proposal but so far these bailouts have been an uter failure and waste of our tax money. Bottom line is that we need to stop the excessive gov spending and get the f out of Iraq! That war cost us greatly. For those that said we went in for oil, we've seen no benefit.
-

They'll spend it.
They'll run to McD, walmart, target, the mall, MetroPCS, the Ford dealer, etc etc.
If someone doesn't pay income taxes, they're broke bitches. You give them 500 bucks, IT AIN'T going under the mattress. If they could do that, they wouldn't be broke to begin with. It's going to be spent quickly.

Run to a Ford dealer? For what?
-
Thanks for a civil criticizm. The debate is good. There is no one right answer.
There were many other ideas rather than trickle down economics in my post. Also, Bush did few of the things I posted. He spent like a crazy liberal. The key to a strong economy IMO is a strong middle and upper middle class with an environment where business thrives and jobs are created for all. That definitely doesn't happen from the bottom up. People with $ should be given incentives to spend and invest. I find great fault with multimillionaires and billionaires and creating more of them and I understand the progressive tax system we already have.
Corporate taxation is even more important than income taxation. We have the 2nd highest corporate tax rate in the world and some wonder why companies move out of the US?
-
Run to a Ford dealer? For what?
to buy a car. People might get their $500 check and they might to put a down payment on a car. If you give checks to 200 million people, and even 1% of them buy a car, you just sold 2 million cars.
-

Maybe but I highly doubt it.
-
Why don't you take it one step further and give a tax credit for buying a car from Ford, or whomever. That way you control what the money is spent on. Again, the stimulus checks didn't help last time and there's no reason they would this time. We must change the systems that have failed. Many of the lower income people I know used the stimulus check to pay bills, not buy cars.
