Anyone remember Tom Varga? I trained with him in the late 80's. He turned pro for a brief time, but didn't do much. Tom had a very complete physique.
-
Damn. a BIGGER version of him could win the Mr O a few times.
-
He is a personal trainer in St. Louis. He runs a lot now and still has big legs. My first impression though was," Wow, this guy is short!"
-
dude, take this shit to match.com. we're not hooking you up with your lover here.

i see him sometimes driving, he's a personal trainer here in STL, he's ALOT smaller but still fit and in great shape from what i can tell, drives a little white car with the name of his business on it.
-
Varga's training pictures were used to illustrate a lot of the POF articles in Ironman during the early and middle 1990s.

the guy actually looks very good these days, in very good shape, the drug bloat, thickness and size is gone but i'm sure he makes a pretty good living, cars are a stupid determinant of wealth and success, worst investment you can make.

That's why I keep my Lambo's in the garage most of the time. I feel like such a dick driving them around.

You are right cars are a terrible investment, but sometimes you have to make bad investments if it makes you happy.

Tom was very strong as a teenager. At ~170 lbs he could bench press 315x20 and 405x5. In his early 20's and around 210 pounds, there were powerlifters at George Turner's Gym in West County. They had every joint in there body wrapped and were wearing suits squatting ~500 lbs for singles. Tom walked up tp their squat rack, no warm-up, no wraps, no suit, and squatted 500lbs to the ground for 5 reps. Then just walked away, they were speachless.

George is a character, was Jeff King training there when you were up there?
-
Jeff King trained at George's Iron Factory in Lemay. I worked there for a short time. But, it was after Jeff had left. Phil Williams was training there at the time.

George had some great gyms back in the day, he'd kick people out for nothing, clinking db's together at the top of reps was a definite no-no. ;D
-
I still cringe when I hear someone drop weights thinking George is coming out and going off. When this happened in his gyms the whole place would get quiet waiting for the hammer to fall.

man can you imagine if George owned a gym today, he'd be throwing people out left and right, there'd be no music, no TV's, no dropping weights, hahahaha, he'd be out of business in a month. ;D

TOM USED TO TRAIN WITH RICK WHO WENT ON TO OWN THE GOLDS IN ST LOUIS FOR QUITE A FEW YEARS.. they had some crazy workouts rick used to tell me.. as for turner.. what a nut.. great gym though..
-
Some pretty good bodybuilders came out of Rick's Gym. It was a small harcore gym before he bought the Golds franchise.
-
One of the most symmetrical bodybuilders ever.

i'm pretty sure he did, he's one of the best bodybuilders to come out of this area ever, i'd say him and Erpelding are the two best to ever come out of STL.
-
If Erpelding had Tommy's work ethic and drive, he would be a top pro.

mark has got a good shot,he's as good as say putnam, without the publicity, his build backs it up,good arms ,delts.

actually i think Mark is way better than Putnam, much better back and upper body in general, legs about equal, problem is Mark just can't get the publicity that Peter does, Mark has the largest arms pound for pound that i've ever seen on a human being in my life.
-
I first saw Mark guest pose as a teenager at a mid-nineties Mr Saint Louis BB show. When I heard a teenage was the guest poser I was disappointed. Then Mark came out and blew everyone away. We had never seen a local teenager that looked like him. I think it was a couple of years later he tore a quad and was a huge setback.

yeah the quad tears were bad but he came back from it and hopefully he can get that pro card he's been chasing for years, did you train at Rick's old gym?
-
No, I lived right down the street from Rick's gym. But, at the time I trained at Turners West. For some reason I didn't get a good vibe from Rick. I've been trying to remember the name of that gym?
