Who were the toughest guys outside of the ring?

And do you have any good stories on this topic?

The first one that comes to mind is my godfather Dick Murdoch.
He was a tough bastard and strong as shit too. When I was a kid we stayed at his ranch in Amarillo TX.
he was trying to give one off his horse a shot for some reason, and the horse kept jumping.  All of a sudden Dickie hit this poor horse in the face and knocked it out I swear to god !  He hurt his hand  but he was able to give the horse the shot.

I am not just saying this cause he is my old man but the real Karl Kox was and I have to say at 77 years old is still a tough SOB.  I have seen him in his old age whip lots of ass.   There are too many stories to tell now but when he was wrestling he caused all kinds of riots being a great heel.

Danny Hodge
This guy was a silver medalist in the Olympics a golden gloves champion and was very strong and he was a small guy.  He could shake you hand and drop you to your knees.  When he was wrestling he was in a car wreck and his car went of a bridge into the water.  With a broken neck, he kicked the window out of his car (under water) and crawled up the bank to flag down a truck. When he recovered he still wrestled.
He is widely known for his incredible hand strength. He could break pliers all day long with one hand.   Even in his old age at all the Wrestling reunions we would have him bust apples with one hand.
It was known that if you had to wrestle him and he wanted to stretch you there was nothing you could do about it.  I could go on and on about this guy.  But if you ask anyone in the wrestling bussines who was the toughest back in the day they would say Danny Hodge.

Yeah, i've heard tons of stories about Haku. A lot of shoots talk about Backlund having retard strength. He seemed like an unassuming guy and people would give him shit, and he'd take thm out in 10 seconds. Martel tells a story like that in one of his videos.

Haku was a bad ass dude

HE'S SOME BACK ROUND ON HAKU AND HIS CRAZY WAYS

Fifita made a name for himself outside the ring as the toughest wrestler of his era and is known for allegedly biting off noses, and knocking people out with one punch, slap, or headbutt. Even renowned hardman Bad News Brown said in interviews that Fifita was without a doubt the most vigorous. Bill Goldberg has also called him the toughest man he's been in the ring with. His one time manager, Bobby "The Brain" Heenan said in a shoot interview that Haku was "the toughest man I've ever met in my life." In 1987, Haku had a backstage fight with Jesse Barr (who wrestled at the WWF as Jimmy Jack Funk) which allegedly resulted in Fifita gouging one of Barr's eyeballs out, causing Barr to later wear a glass eye. After this fight, Fifita had a reputation that steered wrestlers away from backstage confrontations.

In the book Arn Anderson: 4 Ever, Anderson cites an event where Fifita pushed a cowboy through two sets of doors with one hand - and a conversation with The Barbarian about who was tougher. The Barbarian just shook his head when Anderson asked who would win in a fight between him and Fifita and stated "Meng's the man."

He also had an altercation with Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake after Beefcake complained to WWF management that Tonga slapped him too hard during a match. After WWF management informed Tonga, he immediately went to the locker room and grabbed Beefcake out of the shower, and began choking him, lifting him two feet off the floor. Other wrestlers were hesitant to break it up, so finally Hulk Hogan (who Tonga respected) was called in and was able to calm Tonga down.

In an interview with Alex Marvez, Fifita was asked about one of his legendary fights. Fifita stated his favourite was one that "cost him a lot of money." He was at the Baltimore Airport Hilton bar with Sivi Afi when five men started laughing at them and said, "You guys are the fake wrestlers on TV." In response Fifita replied, "I’ll just show you how fake it is," and reached over and grabbed one man while three others jumped on him. As they repeatedly punched him he knocked Three of them out and then applied the Tongan death grip one of them and then Fifita bit the nose of the man he initially grabbed and spat it out. They saw him spit out their friend's nose, and before he could fight them, they quickly evaded. Months later, he saw on the news that he was being sued $2.5 million for the incident.

Well, technically you could probably put Ken Shamrock in there, since he did wrestle.

He probably could have easily taken any of those guys in his early 1990's prime, another legit tough guy who took some beatings.

Albeit a gimmicky choice, cause he didn't wrestle for too long.

Ken Shamrock Vs. the Nasty Boys

By Frank Dusek

I wasn't in the motel when the fight happened. I was running South Atlantic Pro Wrestling at the time so it was my responsibility to find out what happened.

Ken was in bad shape and left soon after the incident to recover. He never had too much to say about the entire affair. He took one whale of a beating. His head was swollen to the point that it almost didn't look human. His entire face was a mass of purples, greens and shades of yellow.

According to the Nasty Boys, the trouble started over a girl. After a show, Ken went to the Nasty's room to "have it out" with Knobs. Knobs was in bed when Ken knocked so Saggs answered the door. According to them, when they opened the door, Shamrock burst into the room and jumped onto Knobs, beating the daylights out of him. If I remember right, Knobs did have a black eye and some swelling the next day.

It has always struck me as odd that a man as accustomed to fighting as Ken Shamrock obviously is, wouldn't take into consideration the fact that his opponent's partner might not just stand by and let his friend take a butt whipping.

According to the Nasty Boys, Saggs joined the fray and the two quickly got the better of a much smaller Ken Shamrock than the one in the WWF today.

Just like Shamrock, the Nasty Boys aren't strangers to fighting and once they got Shamrock down they smelled blood they went into a blind rage. Shamrock lost consciousness as the Nasties continued their assault on the prone Shamrock putting the boots to his head and face.

All the commotion brought out Robert Fuller who was staying in the same motel. It was Fuller and the Pit Bulldogs (Rex & Spike) that talked the Nasty Boys out of throwing the unconscious Shamrock off the balcony to the cement walk below.

I don't know if Ken Shamrock and the Nasty Boys have been on the same card since this happened, but I would hate to be in the way the first time they met.

I doubt either Ken Shamrock or the Nasty Boys have forgotten.

Reputation

The Nasty Boys have a reputation of being very stiff with their opponents.[2] They have also been involved in several legitimate fights with other wrestlers also ribbing (pranking backstage) them:

    * UFC mixed martial artist Ken Shamrock had an argument with the Nasty Boys after they harassed his friend and his friend's fiancée in a nightclub. Later that night, Shamrock went to The Nasty Boys' hotel room to continue the argument, but was hit from behind and beaten. Shamrock confronted Saggs years later in an airport, but decided not to attack him after sufficiently intimidating him.
    * The Nasty Boys fought with Ric Flair in a Manhattan nightclub, with Flair being thrown out of the club as a result.
    * In 1994, The Nasty Boys faced Cactus Jack and Maxx Payne in a series of wild brawls,[2] which Payne later described as "not far away from gladiator days".
    * In 1997, a match between The Nasty Boys and The Outsiders (Scott Hall and Kevin Nash) degenerated into a shoot. [3]
    * On Nov 20th, 2007, on their return match to Smackdown, they worked stiff with Dave Taylor (who is a seasoned veteran) and newcomer Drew McIntyre.[4]

he was defiantly Strong as shit.

In 1983 then WWF wrestlers, olympian strongman ken patera, and masa saito tried to persuade staff at a mcdonalds in Waukesha, Wisconsin to reopen and serve them after the fastfood restaurant had closed for the night.
Employees refused to open up for the hungry pair.... so an irate patera, a former olympic weightlifter had no trouble picking up a large rock and hurling it through the restaurant window. The pair didn't hang about and immediately scarpered before the police could arrive at the scene.
The rozzers did manage to track the wrestlers down back at their hotel room.... and this is where the real fun and games began!
The two grapplers had a huge brawl with the cops, in which a female officer suffered a broken leg, and nine further officers were injured.
Whilst the pair were convicted on separate counts of battery in june 1985, Patera was also found guilty of stoning the window of the Ronald Mcdonald eating hole.
Both men were sentenced to 2 years in the slammer.
Despite the scandal vince gave Patera another run in the WWF in 1987 once he'd served hard time.

HERE'S SOME FUN READING

The Vince McMahon that you should know.
The evil genius behind the World Wrestling Federation's empire is really a softie who donates millions to charities and works tirelessly for the Special Olympics.

WWF mastermind Vince McMahon is living an All-American rags-to-riches story, going from a youth spent in a North Carolina trailor park to a multimillion-dollar mansion in Greenwich, Conn. And along the way he's overcome such adversity as abuse by a stepdad, dyslexia, and attention deficit disorder. But he also has his demons and admits he: Used steroids and encouraged wrestlers to use them cheated on his wife Took illegal drugs.

Now he's on the hotseat for promoting sex, violence, and vulgarity on cable's highest-rated shows, but he insists he won't stop. "People should pick on MTV or some of the other shows that are more graphic than us when it comes to sex or violence," he blasts.

Though 53-year-old Vince Kennedy McMahon is the man viewers love to hate----he plays the WWF's evil CEO on-camera to the hilt---he's well-respected by the local community. "The McMahons are extremely generous and community-minded folks and we at the Special Olympics consider them part of our family," says Marylou Iannone, an official with the Connecticut Special Olympics. Wrestling photographer Mike Lano says McMahon is involved in lots of charity work that he tries to keep quiet.

"He's been a major supporter of two organizations for retired wrestlers, the Cauliflower Alley Club and the Ladies' International Wrestling Association, both in terms of money and sending talent to their fund-raisers," adds Lano. And Tony Spinelli, business writer for the Connecticut Post, says McMahon tries to do everything he can for the community. "He and Linda's commitment to us here includes keeping WWF wrestlers involved in charitable fund-raising and boosting the spirits of sick children by visiting hospitals whenever time permits," he explains.

Even though McMahon's net worth is estimated at more than 1.1 billion dollars, he came from humble beginnings, spending his early years in a Pinehurst, N.C., trailer park with his mom and a series of stepdads. He didn't meet his real father, wrestling promoter Vince J. McMahon, until he was 12. "My life as a kid could not have been any more screwed-up than it was," he says. "My mom was married five times."

McMahon, who was dyslexic and also suffered from attention deficit disorder, reveals that one of his stepfathers used to "beat me unmercifully," but the little guy never backed down. "You'd think I would've learned to say to myself: 'Vince, back off,' but I never did." When he was very young, McMahon recalls being awakened one night by his mother's screams, only to see her being pummeled by his then-stepdad. And his stepfather often turned violent toward Vince, using screwdrivers, wore or a pipe wrence to administer frequent beatings.

McMahon finally met his real father and was in awe of him---and fell in love with the business of wrestling. After graduating from East Carolina State University with a business administration degree, Vince went to work for his dad, announcing and promoting local shows around New England. When McMahon's father started pondering retirement in 1980, Vince pleaded with him to let him but the business, but his dad didn't think he could raise the money by himself. The scheming son led his father to believe he was lining up investors to back him, but what he and wife Linda were secretly doing was lining up credit at various banks, taking out loan after loan.

In 1982, McMahon became sole owner and chairman of Titan Sports Inc., in Stamford, Conn., and named Linda as its president and CEO. They now have 500 employees and to help out the firm's working mothers, Linda put a day-care center, Titan Tots, right on the premises.

But as the company became more and more sucessful, it took toll on his marriage. "I got wayward from time to time, not just in terms of extracurricular activites as far as my marriage was concerned, but I was dabbling in drugs in the '80s, as well," he admits.

They were also rocked by a steroid scandal, when the government prosecuted him in 1993 on charges of conspiring to provide steroids to wrestlers and possession and intent to distribute steroids. He admittied in the trial that he used steroids and knew of their use by his wrestlers--including top grappler Hollywood Hulk Hogan--but insists "steroids were not illegal at that time." He pleaded innocent to all charges and was only convicted of conspiracy to defraud the FDA.

Meanwhile, McMahon is enjoying his on-camera role as the evil boss who's slowly turning into a good guy. The new man viewers love to hate? Vince's 29-year-old son Shane, who's following in his dad's footsteps and will someday run the company. And keeping the WWF a family affair, 22-year-old Stephanie is also part of various WWF story lines. "Hopefully in the future," declares Vince, "a lot of little McMahons will be involved, too!"

Benching 650lbs in the late 60's early 70's and he hit some guy at a club here in AZ back in his bouncing days so hard, that the dudes eyeball popped out ;D.

I had the pleasure to hang and workout with the guy after his liver transplant and he is still one bad ass........ esp for his age.

I can't believe I almost forgot this guy.  Al Hayes

he was very nice. Him and my old man were close. My dad would sit with him all day at the nursing home up till the day he died.

I bet this guy has been a smart ass all his life. I'm sure he's had his fair share of altercations.
he's actually a pretty cool, quiet guy, at least he was circa 2000-2001, used to see him all the time at the old Ultimate Gym here in St. Louis which has since closed.

William Regal is also one that comes to mind.
He started off wrestling people out of the crowd when he was like 16 years old.
