Title: Does Defense Win Championships?
Post by: Dos Equis on January 23, 2009, 12:18:04 PM
I guess we'll find out.  Arizona had the fourth ranked O.  Steelers had the top ranked D.

the cards O would not be ranked that high if they played the steelers schedule, heck they wouldn't be in the playoffs

What about the Niners, Cowboys, Rams, Pats, and Colts?  I'd say their offenses were probably more responsible for their SB wins.

Off the top of my head, I can only think of about four teams in recent memory that great Ds, but only average Os:  Bears, Ravens, Bucs, and Giants.

all of them had very good defenses

the colts defense was ranked low because bob sanders and freeney didn't get healthy until the playoffs

Yes they had good defenses, but it was their offenses that were running up and down the field on everyone.

Also forgot to add the Steelers from a few years ago:  great D, average O.

all of them had good defenses with the exception of one: The Ravens in 2000 had one of the GREATEST five defenses of ALL-TIME.

go back and look at who were on the teams and where they were ranked. the niners had a very good defense people forget that. all those teams you mentioned had good D.
Bob Sanders and Dwight Freeney broke out that year.

Yeah I know they all had good Ds.  I was saying their offenses are what actually won the games for them.  Niners had a very good D, but they had Montana, Rice, Craig, Taylor, Jones.  The Cowboys had a very good D too, but they had Aikman, Smith, Irvin, Novacek, and a brutal O-line.  The Broncos (who I didn't mention) were led by Elway and Davis.

Sanders ("the eraser") and Freeney are studs, but the Colts D was a sieve all season.  Worst in the NFL against the run.  It wasn't until the playoffs that they got their act together, but it was Manning, Harrison, Wayne, etc. who I think were more responsible for their Super Bowl run.

Yep. The offense always overshadowed the D, and thus the glory.

The 2002 Bucs defense would be in that top 5, I hope.  ;D

The BUCS offense was ranked 24th (lowest of any Super Bowl Champion team). And in Super Bowl XXXVII, it was the first time that the team with the top defense faced the team with the top offense.

BUCS 48, Raiders 21!!!!

Not really.  Theys stunk all year and stepped up during the playoffs.  But, you're right, the D won them that sb.

I'd say it was a draw.  The Steelers don't win without the defensive TD or the O driving down the field at the end of the game.

Arizona's D played as well as its O.

Most of those teams had real good defenses, the Colts always had a good offense but didn't win it all until their defense improved.

Good defense stops good offense all the time in every sport. Now a great offense can beat a good defensive team.
