Title: Squats at the gym?
Post by: flexingtonsteele on January 28, 2009, 07:57:24 AM
Do u guys ever see anyone doing them. Because i sure dont! If it wasnt for the leg extension and leg curl machines, I dont think anyone would train legs at all.

Is this just at my gym or is this all over?? I mean these fagbags dont even leg press

Discuss.

we have the leg pressers, and some old fart squats 135 and spends 45 mins of his hour long workout stretching in front of the squat rack. Other than that no.

You mean the racks that people do curls, upright rows and shrugs out of? Because I squat out of them....I just thought they were used for those other exercises and I was the one going against the grain.  ;)

Spoke to this dude the other day.....said he's doing his first show in a couple of months. Thing is, he doesn't train legs. He sure trains arms and chest though....

4 kids were doing squats yesterday.  The oldest was probably 16.  They set the bars of the power rack 6" below their upright position and were banging out hardcore reps with 185.  Funny, they never hit the bars once, so their entire range of motion was ~4".

Even in our gym,the proper deep squat is peformed by Paco and me only.
Here I say I certainly brag about myself now.

Smith Squats are all I can ever do as there is always someone doing something useless in the squat rack. I prefer the vertical leg press anyway.

In my gym I see a lot of guys doing moderately heavy leg presses, around 7 plates....when finished they go over to the squat rack and do squats with no more than 90kg (198lbs).  Each to their own, but I find it odd.

This is one of my biggest pet hates...waiting for the squat rack, while someone is using it for something other than squats!!   :-(

I squat regularly and use proper form - below parallel. But I can count on the fingers of one hand how many other people I see doing them. And even less who do them properly.

I usually train in my basement or some of the various gyms at work.  My wife joined a commercial gym that use to be a world gym.  She kept asking me to work out in the gym.  I started out squatting in a power rack.  The gym was filled with about 70% women.  On the power rack next to me a little hottie put 135 on the bar and did full range down to the floor squats.  If memory serves me right she worked up to 185 cranking out the reps.  I never see men using squats and if they do they put something like 405 on the bar and proceed to do less than half squats bragging to anyone that would listen about how deep they go.

Cut them some slack, they're "bodybuilders", not weightlifters.

thats cool, i remember seeing hide at the arnold last year, and i was so suprised, by how small he was, like his arms arent that big, he's not that wide or nothing, but when he steps onstage its a different story .

i guess that just shows u how much of an illusion bb is.

Of all the guys I've seen there, only a few were "big", most of them are short and are surprisingly not as large as they look on stage.

it was crazy, i did front squats today, and i had this skinny lil' asian twink stare at me for atleast 10 straight minutes in amazement, like he had never seen them done before.

after he was done staring at me, he then began to do a combination of deadlifts, clean and presses, and calf raises all in one movement lol with two 10lbs on each side!! oh yea all with horrible form.

sad man, just sad.

Maybe if they got rid the leg extention and/or smith machine, people might squat more.

Theres only one squat rack at my gym, one smith machine, one power rack, one hack squat and 2 45 degree leg sleds.  Theres also one of those hammer squat lung things.  Most days there is no wait for any of this equipment, but then again i lift usually around 130 pm when theres maybe 15 - 20 customers in the whole gym.
