Hill Republican: Stimulus aids illegal immigrants

WASHINGTON (AP) - The $800 billion-plus economic stimulus measure making its way through Congress could steer government checks to illegal immigrants, a top Republican congressional official asserted Thursday.
The legislation, which would send tax credits of $500 per worker and $1,000 per couple, expressly disqualifies nonresident aliens, but it would allow people who don't have Social Security numbers to be eligible for the checks.
Undocumented immigrants who are not eligible for a Social Security number can file tax returns with an alternative number. A House-passed version of the economic recovery bill and one making its way through the Senate would allow anyone with such a number, called an individual taxpayer identification number, to qualify for the tax credits.
A revolt among GOP conservatives to similar provisions of a 2008 economic stimulus bill, which sent rebate checks to most wage earners, forced Democratic congressional leaders to add stricter eligibility requirements. That legislation, enacted in February 2008, required that people have valid Social Security numbers in order to get checks.
The GOP official voiced concerns about the latest economic aid measure on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss it publicly.
Republicans have already blasted the package for including what they argue is wasteful spending and omitting tax cuts for wealthier people and businesses they say are needed to jump-start the anemic economy.
Not a single Republican voted for an $819 billion version of the plan when it passed the House on Wednesday.
GOP senators arranged a midday news conference to voice their concerns.

Has anyone read about FDR when he had complete control of Congress? This is very similar. Lots of shoddy legislation is going to get through because the American voter is blinded by words like "hope" and "change".

I'm not going to put all the blame on Obama...its the far leftist congressional democrats and Pelosi that are just out of hand and pushing their weight around. I feel that Obama would do a far better job with a more balanced or republican leaning congress. The lopsided balance of power is allowing the lefty democrats to push their extreme agendas, which is not good for the economy or for most of the country.
This is exactly the concern many people raised when they said the power swung too far to the left. Big democrat majorities in the house, the senate, a far left speaker and a liberal democratic president. Pelosi is a disgrace. Far left liberals are so bad for this country...its become clearer and clearer to me. Don't like the far right loons either, but they are far from power and influence right now. I think Obama has a great skill at compromising...but he's basically compromising between the far left and moderate democrats right now and the far left is more powerful.

I'm willing to bet there are countless Mom & Pop grocery stores in LA, that might be hurting for business.
I betcha they'd want illegal aliens shopping in their stores giving them business, purchasing American made goods from their shelves that keep American workers employed. You can't cut your nose off to spite your face. Like it or not, part of the population is made up of illegal aliens. The more money they have, the more money they spend, and the more it stimulates the economy, keeping people employed, and keeping businesses and manufacturers in business.

Illegals avoid all other taxes and its not at all fair. If I didn't have to pay Federal, state, local, medicare, rita, property tax and the rest of it, I'd have a lot more disposable income to spend too. No way in hell should they receive the same rebate on paying sales tax only.
Illegals harm government taxation twice because the employer avoids paying their 1/2 of payroll tax then the illegal doesn't report earnings and pays no tax on that $ either. The rest of us pay somewhere between 25-40% total taxes of earned amounts when you add all the taxes together.

Maybe because I work over 60 hours a week and have to pay for this garbage with crazy high taxes to people who refuse to get off their lazy asses and improve their lives.

Matrix, its a big deal. This is the largest package of government spending ever. More $ than the Iraqi and Afghanistan wars combined. If we don't pay a great deal of attention to it, we are at fault if it fails.
