T-Nation: Out of all the men you competed with and met, who were the biggest gentlemen and who were the biggest jerks?
MQ: Almost all the guys were real gentlemen back then: Lee Haney, Lee Labrada, Berry DeMey, Mike Christian, Ron Love, and Bob Paris. Toward the end when I was competing, two European guys, both now dead, struck me as being the same way. That was Andreas Munzer and Momo Benaziza.
The only jerk I knew from my day was Shawn Ray. I was standing next to him once when this young kid, maybe ten or eleven years old, walks up with his mom to Shawn. The kid's mom says her son has Shawn’s pictures up all over his bedroom wall and would love an autograph. Shawn just blew him off and walked away. I felt so bad I gave him one of my photos and signed it. Later I got a letter from the mom saying her son had torn down all of Shawn’s pictures and put mine up.

No one likes Shawn and hes thinks it because everyones jealous of him, Hes wrong the guy was just an asshole, never won the olympia, great physique, but rembered by his peers as the biggest jerk in bodybuilding, thats his legacy. Those who think different, just plain dont know him.

I am sorry to say that the exact same thing happened to me at one of the very first BB shows I ever attended in the very late 1980's. I actually purchased a poster of Shawn Ray and then asked if he would sign it and he laughed and said "no" and then turned away. Mike Quinn was also at the same show and behind a table selling photos and posters. I bought a great black and white poster of Mike and although he had a very intimidating persona, he was nothing but friendly. When asked, he graciously signed a long autograph on my poster. As I walked out of the show, I threw the Shawn Ray poster in the trash. It was one of my very first experiences meeting pro bodybuilders. Mike Quinn was the real deal and always supported his friends as was evidenced one year at I believe the Mr. East Coast in NJ somtime in October right before the Nationals in which he flew up with his friend who was competing. I believe his friend who looked like a replica of the Gold's Gym statue was robbed in his placing and Mike was very upset and wished to talk to the promoter and the NPC rep. Both guys tried to make an early exit and Mike was looking for them in the parking lot as word got to him that the promoter claimed not to be afraid of Mike and actually said some inflammatory remarks. Needless to say, neither promotor nor NPC rep was anywhere to be found as Mike made it known to everyone that he was in the parking lot waiting.

Thats because you have never done business with him and there was no way he could use you to make any money for himself. He'll be great and everything and then fuck you in the end. You hear it all the time. He uses people and companies as much as possible and then fucks them all. Then he tells everyone he si a born again Christian and he would never do that. Basically he is a piece of shit in a short black body. But other than that he is a great guy ::) Take it as you were one of the lucky guys who only met him and never had to do business with him.

The only first-hand knowledge I have of these claims was at the Arnold Classic back in 2002 or 2003. I was right near Shawn who was eating a subway sandwich at the Expo around some other Pros. I don't know if that was around the same time or not with the talk about him making or comeback or not. Anyways, someone approached him for an autograph and his response was "I will after I get this sandwich down, I need to get this down first". Struck me as egotistic. I guess you have to be to some degree to make it in the sport.

Not only Shawn Ray,I say this to all of you pros.
You have to be nice to your fans even if your mom or dad is dead in that day. Because, you are making a living with this.
I see all other business which is open to the public do this and treat their clients right. Even the evil politician is nice to the people always.
Plus dont forget. Its only BBing. Not baseball,Football, Soccer,tennis, F1...etc.
Its a MINOR Sport. Even you guys should be more nice to the fan.
And even I have more fan indirectly than most of you guys due to being a rice cake producer. At least I entertain 10000people in every month. AND I AM VERY NICE TO MY CLIENTS ALWAYS unlike you guys.

Yes, plus I know someone that worked with him - soem international seminars he did. Said Shawn was not only nice, but helped him with advice etc.
I am not saying the guy is perfect, but perhaps he is just a businessman.
I've owned two businesses for over a decade, and I know quite a few that think I am nasty due to business decisions I made. Like once I canned this single mother for constantly, and I mean constantly calling in sick. Sounds harsh, as the business was appt based [a upscale spa where we charged minimum $100 an hr] I was losing money hand over fist by employing her. I felt bad for her, she was a nice person but that doesn't pay my mortgage. Those that critized me, glossed over all the charity donations my company made and also when I asked whether they wanted to give me $15,000 a year to make up for it - strangely they then didn't want to lol.
In business and getting ahead sometimes hard calls must be made. Many people are downright nasty yes, perhaps Shawn is I do not know, but in business you make some hard calls and many will say you are nasty anyway.
