Title: Obama team uses focus groups to sell stimulas plan
Post by: Bindare_Dundat on February 03, 2009, 09:54:19 PM
While Karl Rove and the Bush Administration came under fire for governing in constant-campaign mode, it looks like the shrewd Obama campaign will use some of its tactics to help rule. In hopes of selling a $775 billion stimulus plan to Congress, the Obama team has turned to polling and focus group data. Expect to hear poll-tested language, including "recovery" (not "recession") and "investment" (not "infrastructure"), during Obama's term.

Bloomberg reports that public polling by presidents is nothing new. Bill Clinton polled policy details, while George W. Bush tended to poll the presentation only.

Of course, messaging is an important way to pass legislation (for example it's much easier to push a "rescue" plan than a "bailout"); but, focus group feedback probably shouldn't replace in-depth policy research or be used to manipulate the public.

both parties have used their mccain/obama email lists to spam us with their viewpoints on the stim plan.

Obama 2 emails.  mccain 1.

Obama is still trying to baffle people with bullshit, the longer this sell goes on, the more unpopular it becomes.

Will focus group feedback be used for anything BUT to manipulate the public?  Obama's entire campaign was based on touchy-feely slogans ("Yes we can", "Hope", "Change" etc.) and warm fuzzy infomercials designed to manipulate the public.  Why should this be any different?

Then again, polls and focus groups might be the best way to listen to what the people want!

Gallup reports his popularity is unchanged.

For a long time republicans have been king of that shit.  They knew exactly how to doublespeak titles to get things to pass.  Clear Skies, No Child left Behind, Healthy Forests, Patriot Act on and on.  One of the heavy inner criticisms among dems is that they didn't do that nearly as well as the republicans.  So now we see a full circle of bullshit doublespeak. tit for tat.  My only hope is that it's not doublespeak and rather trying to sell the actual idea and that the idea is good.  I have little hope of that being the case, we'll see.
