How Many Pull Ups Can You Do?

.5

60 for the first set at 220 lbs it falls really quick in the next couple of sets.

i can get around 21-23 on the first set.
no one is gonna do 60 at once unless they have no legs or are a wheelchair athlete or something.

Somewhere between 1.5 and 3

zero--none--nada

absolutely, especially if hes 225

I agree with you.

I can do 8 1 arm chins with each arm (I am holding my working arm around the wrist with the non-working arm...not a "true" one arm chin-up), but I've never been able to do high reps in chins/pull-ups. I think I can get 10-12 for a set or two and then I'm toast for the next sets of the exercise.
-
Did 4 sets of 15 yesterday to warm up felt great! Havent done them in awhile used to be one of my favorites for back..
-
If you guys can't do any pull-ups, utilize the negative technique...
Put something underneath the bar (such as a box or a step-stool) that will allow you to get into the top position in the pull up, where you're all the way up holding yourself up. Grab the bar, contract all your muscles to hold yourself there and lift your lower body into the air by bending your hip and knees up. Now, you should be in the top position of the pull-up...
Lower under control and very slowly. It should take you 10+ seconds to reach the bottom. It will be very intense. Once you reach the bottom, get back up the same way you did the first time by standing on the same object then grabbing the bar in the top position. Get back up there immediately and repeat.
Do this until you can no longer lower yourself under control and are therefore reaching negative failure.
(NOTE: Even if you can do positive pull-ups this negative technique is extremely useful. Strap some weight onto your waist with a dipping belt. Get the total weight (including bodyweight) up to about 110% your estimated 1 rep max. This works wonderfully for growth in general, and especially for breaking plateaus.)

60 and that's the truth set number 2 is usually 20 and that's a struggle, because i keep the rest time short.

there is no way a 225lb guy is going to do 60 pullups at once followed by a set of 20.
unless you have nothing from the waist down, and all your weight is in your arms lol

Or he's one of those guys who bearly bends his elbow....monster 5" range of motion....haha
-
I have slowly worked my way upto 10 using a underhand grip. Overhand wide grip I am not sure.
-
30 on my first set. I haven`t really tried to go beyond that on a first set as I try to do 50.
The next set I use 90lbs, then 100, then 110 with a chain.
By then I am at 50.

Ya, but you weigh like 140lbs. now, of course it's easy at the bodyweight...try doing 30 at 250, LOL

I can do this at 183.

When we're talking about pull-ups, are we talking about underhand close-grip or wide-grip chins?
On the former, I have no idea - I never do them. On the latter, about 13 for a first set.

5 - 8

I am better at overhand grip than Underhand grip.
I am amazed at how this is not true for the majority.
-
Once did 20 with a 25 on the belt. Now: none. Don't miss those at all.
-
20 with bad form for the last 3-4 though. How long do you all rest between sets. I'll usually only do 15 my first set, then abut 12 is my max and after that 6-7. I rest 1 minute between sets, i'm wondering if i recover slow and if i should rest longer or if this is normal.
-
Are these full chest to bar pullups? Or Chris Cormier 5 inch movement pullups?

12 or so.

20 full ROM chins

Haha if you can do just ONE one armed chinup you are elite/world class, but the beast youngblood can do it for 8 reps with 2 45's strapped to his back. ;D

There's talk of a pullup competition on the Powerlifting Board:

::)
That is a ridiculous thing for him to say... I can do 10-12 and I know full well I can not do ONE single arm pull up... NOT ONE.

How many can you do RIP?

How many can you do RIP?
When I am in contest shape, prolly 16-18. Now that I am heavier and out of practice, maybe 10-12.

underhand involves biceps too much. I only do them overhand.

a chin is underhand
a pullup is overhand
chins better for lats IMO

Can anyone do "muscle ups" where you do a pull up then keep the momentum going to push yourself up over the bar. This one trainer at my gym used to train navy seals and could knock out a set of 10 of those no problem. I can't do any.
-
no where to try it in my gym though i doubt i could anyway. I am sure at least 3-4 in my gym could

All I know is my cousin is a Navy Seal, and he is incredibly strong when it comes to pull ups, they do alot of them i can imagine, and I've seen him knock out 40 full reps easily, but I would like to see the dude that claims he can do 60 reps, that would be impressive if its true..
-
How about these?

15 at 235 lbs

easy

It's all about progression with muscle ups. I'm not saying they're easy, but if you train towards them they are a lot less difficult than you imagine.
-
Depends....anywhere from 20 to 33 on the first set. After that, it drops to about half. Then to about 10 reps, down to 5 to 7 or so by the end.
-
easy
impressive.....
-
20 when i was 75kg......
now at 89kg, i will be happy if i get 12

For the people who have a hard time with pull ups, we have them do assisted band pullups.

i dont know,i dont work out
;D

My question for all of you is...
If you set the lat pulldown machine at your bodyweight, how does the number of reps you can complete compare to the number of bodyweight pull ups you can complete?
Can you do more lat pulldowns with your bodyweight than bodyweight pull-ups?
Or, can you do more bodyweight pull-ups than lat pulldowns at that same weight?

Interesting. I am similar.
My old training partner used to be able to do a LOT more with his bodyweight on pull-ups than on lat pulldown. I'm different, and apparently you are as well.
Now I'm wondering what other Getbig members will report...

what kind of band is that? pretty good idea

::)
Roll those eyes all you want.
-
15-20 full range, overhand, to chest. 12-15 overhand, to the neck. 2nd set is usually only half the number of reps..it's a killer exercise.
-

Flex bands.

this goes to my point in another thread about functional strength........there are plenty of people who can either bench or deadlift huge weight that can't do 5 pull ups or 20 push ups........strength training with weights is not optimal for developing functional strength
-
5x10 every back day
-
Last back workout chins were:
1 x 6
1 x 7
1 x 8
1 x 9
1 x 10
1 x 11
Super strict, full rom, bodyweight only, 191 lbs. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
-
-
i'm going to try to give you guys 30 at 252lbs bw..
yeah i put a little back on since the cut.. whatever HAHA!
there's a video on the powerlifting board of konti doing 55 at 275+lbs bodyweight..
and people think powerlifters are fat worthless slobs ;D
-

Yep.
-
that's my main focus with all my training and clients..which is why i'm such a big gpp advocate.. i want functional training as well as sports specific training. I want all my training to be able to carry over to other forms as well as everyday lift which is has and does.. keep your eye on the prize.. and the other on the rest
-
i never do them, but out of curiousity i tried them recently and got 8 good ones and 2 3/4 rep ones.
When i started working out I tried them in the old gym i use to go to and couldn't get 1, felt ashamed, never tried them again. ;D

You may be a bit gullible.

20 on first set

i am heavier that the lat pulldown stack so i dont know.
lat pulldown is awesome way to work for chins.
also my lat pulldown machines has no knee support rest thing

lat pull downs are not really comprable with chins or pull ups i've seen people who could use the whole stack on a pull down machine who can't do 1 pull up

what i meant was to work towards being able to chin.
do a underhand grip on a bar and very simlar movement
-
what i meant was to work towards being able to chin.

no i fully understood what u meant.......the best way to work towards being able to chin is negative or assisted reps.....pull downs of any form aren't a good indicator or way to work towards it.....when i first started training exclusively with bw exercises a few years ago i could deadlift ,row and pull down all kinds of decent weight but i couldn't do a single pull up ...... now i have no idea how much i could lift in those exercises but i can do 35-40 pull ups with no problem in a set
-
What teh hell is a pull-up?
-
a pull up is a chin.
my mate trains his clients who cant chin by adding a plate on pulldown machine each workout. EVERYONE can chin once they work up to near their bodyweight and rep it easy enough

ok if u say so i'm not gonna argue with u but thats simply not the case

i have seen people who cant chin work to full chins by doing lat pulldown with close underhand grip.
to say its not the case is absurd

i'm not saying its not possible its just not optimal it would take way less time to work up to chins by just doing assisted chins or negatives

How Many Pull Ups Can You Do?
6...I do 4 sets of 6
-
It's impossible to compare considering all the cheating going on with chins. I see guys doing what's called kip ups where just jerk your entire body up to create upward momentum calling it a pullup. Others cheat by not going all the way up and not going to a dead hang.
I'll answer like this. 17 real pullups with an over hand grip. With an under hand 20. Doing kip ups and not getting a full range of motion way over 20.
-
best ever. 25 straight at 190 pounds.
right now probably 20 or so
-
Personal best was 51 at 183lbs. Currently 35-40 depending on my body that day.
None of that half rep stuff. All the way down, all the way up.

Heres a chance for you all to prove it! We're having a contest on the PL/Strongman Board to see which Getbigger can do the most pullups. Have a look.

I wouldn't go that far....it's a matter of working up top them. Besides, you're a big dude right? I'm hovering around 200lbs.

have a nice day :-*

im about 248lbs. And i didnt grow up training back. When i was 190 i could do a smooth 15...
-
Wow, I've always been able to do the "hold wrist with one hand, bar the other" one hand pull-up but never thought I was strong enough for the mechanics to do that. I need to try that now.

That was only for 5 though... Where is the x 8 ;D
If anyone could do one arm chins by 8 they'd damn sure be posting a video of it.
