Gym is great. Arnie trained there in 1968/9 i believe.

Haha the weights and equitment were built in Harland & Wolffe, where the titanic was built, handmade 50years ago.

If they were gonna snap they should have snapped by now lol...but yes i was leg pressing today and had to do it in socks as the platform you press your feet with was moist with dew and was slippy lol

if someone gets hurt, how does the owner manages it without a signed contract/warranty ?

a contract can be oral, written or through conduct. You are given a monthly paper membership card. he also keeps a copy for himself.

If you get hurt you put a plaster on rest until its better then come back down. No need to sue for everything.

pec/armpic area was fucked badly...seems almost better enoughto train though i am waiting till monday just to be safe and benching a onster 200lbs 5x5 hopefully lol if i can.

That angled leg press is a fucking curse to load espec when plates are cold and damp they freeze together lol. Some stronger guiys load a barbell across it to add extra weight

I trained in a gym with a leg press like that a few years ago - your fingers get a workout just from loading and unloading the damn thing.

Nothing wrong with old equipment but looks like a bunch of lazy fucks workout there.  Nobody seems to pick shit up.  Looks crowded too.  But the old school equipment is cool and all you need!  20 pounds a month?  LOL what a scam though!  I'd pay 5 pounds a month for a place like that.  I pay $40 a month for a brand new commerical gym here in the US.

100lb metal 50yr old dumbells weigh the same as 100lb rubber coated dumbells.

Plus its so convenient, 3 inute walk from my work. i train then dander around to work.

It is old and rusty but not that dirty.

The owner and the only staff member is a 71yr old man. No point in him trying to tidy as 30mins later its a mess again though occassionally ill tidy up weights and he tidy's up before hometime

That's my  point.  People should be cleaning up after themselves.  I see that shit all the time in the gyms I've belonged to.  It's laziness and if I owned a gym I'd get on people about it.
Title: Re: Welcome to my gym
Post by: Ursus on February 17, 2009, 03:20:05 PM
Its easier for plates to be scattered all over the place than in one corner. E.g if someone is on the incline bench and teh plates are up near dumbells carrying plates would be a pain in the ass.

I wont lie i leave plates at my ass but at least not in the middle of where people walk. I dont leave dumbells lying about though

In that gym there is too little storage room for all the weights though. I understand what you mean in other gyms that do have the space for proper storage of weights. I hate when people leave bars loaded

That looks like the gym I used to train at, no machines, no fancy electric gizmo's, just shitloads of metal handmade years ago.  I miss training at that place.  Although it was never as messy as that.  There was some weird guy who used to come in and he never worked out, he'd just put all the plates and dumbells back in place for a few hours then leave.

Gym equipment can be good even if old. However, modern equipment works so much better than the old stuff. Who here would use that leg extension-leg curl? I haven't seen one like that for decades. The leg press and hack squat are primitive and probably need new wheels. Most good machines use linear bearings nowadays. If equipment is smooth then that is half the battle. There is no excuse for the extremely bent bar on the Smith machine. They need plenty of racks and more plates.

Benches and squat racks should have safety stops. Upholstery should be replaced when holes are in them both to protect the padding and for health reasons.

Tell the owner to look for used equipment from auctions when gyms close. Even equipment 5 or 10 years old can be cheap to buy. If they replace one piece of equipment every 3 months they will have a much better gym in a couple of years. I see no point in keeping old equipment just because it is old. I have seen a couple of gyms like that in Sydney. I told one owner that he had a museum because the equipment was primitive and from different builders. The comment wasn't appreciated. Of course, I design and build most of our gym equipment and still have trouble keeping up with requests for new and different equipment.

From the photos it seems the owners never reinvested much at all in the premises and equipment.

there are so many plates its insane. always plates lying about and more than could be used at once.

for teh peoepl that train there its suiots them. for fancy gym and trainers there are plenty of those also.

its just a spit and sawdust gym. no frills. no thrills. just weights.

weight is weight no matter what. plus they have lasted 50years no rpoblem. BTW those machins are smooth as hell believe it or not

Is the Smith machine still smooth? It would be dangerous to use with that bent bar.

As long as equipment pivots in the right place it should be fine. Arnold and others built themselves up on primitive equipment. Most of the equipment there seems to suit taller individuals as there aren't many adjustments for leg length, etc. Not good enough in today's commercial gyms. No wonder women haven't joined.

women cant join. only one changing room.

it suits shorter people to be honest

it is old and rough looking but many great physiques have been built there

Did I see a picture of you in the new Reps magazine?

It looks like you with Larry Scott back in the day.

Chuck still own that gym? and is it still across from the FD?

That was a bad ass gym.
Yes he does. Where its at now is a new location, its in the middle of an industrial/warehouse area, i believe its literally a few buildings down from where it use to be. From what i heard where it originally was, was pretty big, could land a plane in there. Its about an hour from where i live, so ive been there only 1 time but i agree its a bad ass gym and definately worth the drive. Im all about finding little hole in the wall, hardcore gyms, even if its an hour or more drive. Ive been all over chicago/burbs just to train at a hardcore gym.

I don't get Reps magazine so wouldn't know. Larry Scott gave a seminar at my gym in 1979. The best seminar anyone has given in Sydney in my opinion. His arms were still big then and he even competed again after that but didn't place. Robert Nailon took a photo of Larry and me with the painting Robert did of Larry posing. Robert made Larry look even bigger than he was. I will have to find that photo somewhere.

they would definately find you interesting unless you are an american tourist who wears a bumbag and has a camera around their neck with sandals and white socks.

if not then yes...yes they would
