The number of Americans who applied for first-time unemployment benefits holds at 627,000.
The number of Americans continuing to file for unemployment benefits has hit a record high, according to a government report released Thursday.
The number of workers receiving unemployment checks for one week or more rose to a record 4,987,000 in the week ended Feb. 7, the most recent data available. That tops the previous week's revised level of 4,817,000.

Does anybody have any links to info on how long the typical person on unemployment stays on it?
I saw somewhere awhile ago that once on unemployment, most people stay on as long as they can until they go get another job.
ANYONE can find a job really quick if they want to. McDonalds is always hiring.

Yeah, but if you are getting the max amount of unemployment because you had a high paying job, plus the new tax free distribution on unemployment up to a certain amount, it may be more money to stay home, rather than work at mcdonalds.

DUD DUH DUH.... If you had a high paying job...that means you live in a better area, have a car, children, a wife, insurance, investments etc etc the highest unemployment is in the 400 dollar range before taxes so how is a person to survive on that??? I guess if they lived in a trailer like you they would be fine...but a person with a house or apartment would find themselves using ALL of their unemployment just to pay the rent or mortgage. You guys need to get out of your parents trailer and on your own, so you can have a real grasp of the world...Right now mom and or dad is taking full care of your asses and it has fucked up your minds. Nonetheless unemployment is coming your way...your mom or dad will soon be standing in line themselves...

yep. If you cut unemployment from 6 months to 1 month, you'd see the unemployment rate drop.
Let's say a grocery manager was making $500 a week slaving away 60 hours at his grocery store... He got laid off. He's still earning $340 a week now. Maybe picking up something on the side, maybe living on savings, sold a thing or two.
He's now sleeping til noon. Some cash still coming in. He's going to the beach, chillin, talking about how bad things are. He COULD be working 2 fast-food jobs while applying at other management jobs - but then he'd still only be making $340 a week, and wouldn't be at the beach all day.
unemployment should be shortened significantly.
