Title: What is the Strongest (Caffiene) Coffee?
Post by: darksol on February 19, 2009, 09:02:50 PM
The strongest stuff I ever drank was Starbucks breakfast blend whole bean.  I used to grind it and run it through one of those cheap $20 espresso machines.  It would seriously wake you up.  Just wondering what everyone else drinks.  I am currently drinking folgers 100% columbian.  When I say strong coffee I am not talking about the coffee used to ship poorly packaged kilos accross the border.  I am talking pure regular coffee.

sorry my friend but you are not a real coffee drinker when adding sweetner and cream.

I don't know about the strongest, but here's the best:

Kopi Luwak (pronounced [ˈkopi ˈluwak]) or Civet coffee is coffee made from coffee berries which have been eaten by and passed through the digestive tract of the Asian Palm Civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus)

I don't think you could afford that for even 2 weeks.

Most of the World's best coffee is made from the Arabica coffee bean, that isn't very rich in caffeine. The most loaded on caffeine are the robusta beans, which make cheap Honduran and Brazilian coffee. IMO, the best way to take caffeine is by just taking the 200 mg extra-strong Noodoz or Vivarin pills. That is a pretty hefty dose, and it allows you to control exactly how much caffeine you're putting into your system.

lacks all the healthful benefits of coffee however, which may add to the synergistic effects of caffeine on neurodegenerative diseases.

I agree if caffeine is all you are worried about.

I like the taste, and feel of coffee.  Telling a coffee drinker to just take nodoz is like telling a body builder to not eat tasty steaks, but to just hit the juice.  I just want to know what is the strongest coffee I can buy.

Robusta beans from Brazil. You can buy them in bags for a cheap price. They contain more than 1% caffeine by weight.

I came across this, but I have no idea what the numbers mean  ???  Doesn't seem to be a huge variance regardless of what they mean  :-\

Caffeine Content in beans and blends

(Source: Newsletter--Mountanos Bros. Coffee Co., San Francisco)

VARIETALS/STRAIGHTS
Brazil Bourbons  1.20%
Celebes Kalossi  1.22
Colombia Excelso  1.37
Colombia Supremo  1.37
Ethiopian Harrar-Moka  1.13
Guatemala Antigua  1.32
Indian Mysore  1.37
Jamaican Blue Mtn/Wallensford Estate  1.24
Java Estate Kuyumas  1.20
Kenya AA  1.36
Kona Extra Prime  1.32
Mexico Pluma Altura  1.17
Mocha Mattari (Yemen)  1.01
New Guinea  1.30
Panama Organic  1.34
Sumatra Mandheling-Lintong  1.30
Tanzania Peaberry  1.42
Zimbabwe  1.10

BLENDS & DARK ROASTS
Colombia Supremo Dark  1.37%
Espresso Roast  1.32
French Roast  1.22
Vienna Roast  1.27
Mocha-Java  1.17

DECAFS--all @ .02% with Swiss Water Process

These numbers may be correct for the coffee offered by Mountanos Bros. Coffee Co. but they probably are not necesarily correct in a generic way. Caffeine will vary from farm to farm and plant variety to plant variety.

As a general rule robusta has approximately twice as much caffeine as arabica.

Why not drink tea, then? Even more antioxidants than coffee. And I doubt that the antioxidants in coffee would make that much of a differences in preventing things like Parkinson's, Alzheimer, etc. There are foods that contain far more antioxidants than coffee and far more potent too. All things considered, a guy who drinks no coffee but eat lots of veggies and fruits will arguably have a lower risk of neurodegenetation than a coffee junkie who eats no veggies. The true neuroprotective function seems to be caffeine's effect on dopamine and not the antioxidants that coffee has. For neuroprotection I'd take selegiline, a selective monoamine-oxidase B inhibitor, carbodopa and cordegocrine mesylate, which protects the brain from oxidative stress, increases blood and oxygen supply via vasodilation, keeps neuronal mitochindria small and efficient and stimulates the growth of dendrites. Of course, it's also very important to eat a diet moderate in calories with little saturated fats to keep your brain capilaries free from clog and take ample omega-6 fatty acids to support the myelin sheet of dendrites as well as to further keep capilaries free from clog. Coffee is redundant.

SMM, your posts would improve 1000% if you

a) could add a column once a while and

b) could not try to come over as a smartass-know-it-all all the time.

Spread the love, this could make this great nutrition board awesome.

the lighter the roast, the higher the caffeine.  I am drinking a light roast Costa Rican Tarrazu right now and I feel like I am on the verge of a panic attack.

Starbucks and Panera Bread have the strongest coffee I've had. Both happen to be very bitter and tasteless too IMO. One large 20 ouncer and I'm shitting my brains out, 2 and I'm having heart palpatations and feel like I'm having a heart attack.
