I was reading a Palumbo column yesterday. He said carbs are your energy source, so you should use them to fuel your workouts. But when it comes to adding muscle, the macronutrients that matter are protein and fat. Is this true?
-
How many essential amino acids are there?
How many essential fatty acids are there?
How many essential carbohydrates are there?
Unless you're using something else, the answer to the above questions answer yours too.

Muscle is over rated. Society is designed so you never need muscle. Adapt people.
-
let's say you drink 2 scoops whey, a few times a day.
you take your BCAAs between meals.
You take fish oil caps.
Now you're free to just mix in carbs, and it's a win-win?

Society is designed so you look like crap.

I would agree, but not necessary unless you are obese and have a hard time putting on muscle without adding a bunch of fat. Or if you want to lose fat without sacrificing too much muscle.

Define "adding muscle"! If we are talking about size, the glycogen (from carbs) and the water it binds in the cell increase the volume.
Paul Diver approved.

To answer your question. No this is not true, infact it is completely false!
Maybe you should ask him why he includes alot of simple sugars before and after the workouts in his offseason diet, and why he includes carbs
in the offseason if he believes that all you need is protein and fats.
The fact is that it is extremely hard to grow muscles without carbs, the state of ketosis mimmicks starvation.
They use it with patients of epilepsy because of this. Look it up.
In my opinion no carb diets are not necessary at all and simply a gimmick to make people like Palumbo money.
I get about 400 grams of carbs daily when getting ready for a contest, 600 when I'm not.

The thing you have to take into account is that these guys are already huge! Toney Freeman uses Palumbo diet and gets shredded no doubt, but he is already huge, he built that physique from years of eating massive amounts of carbs. I'm sure the same thing goes for Centaponi, he gets ripped when using Palumbo's diet, but I pretty sure to put all that mass on his frame he ate a ton of carbs for years, then used Palumbo's diet to refine and tighten up..right now he's trying to put mass on to compete in the pros and I'm sure he includes ton of carbs in his meals daily, but when he starts his contest prep I'm sure he'll go fat/protein.

yes. good point. exactly.

ah, this wasn't aboit keto and didn't forbid carbs.
this was about offseason gains... saying fat and protein were the macros that were to be emphasized, with carbs being a 'whatever'.

Its true as long as he stick to his GAS use....
Take the Juice out of Palumbo and all he needs is protein and fat, to become the next Bob Paris (only Uglier)

while carbs are not essential in any diet, if one is looking to grow muscles at the fastest possible rate, then a high carb intake is definitely necessary.
palumbo is wrong.

RIP Dan, hope you gettin' plenty of female ass in 'roiders haven!'

Sadly, he is going downhill, he eats more and more clean, neglects saturated fats and simple sugars... Actually he's quite depressed these days, the shadow of his old self.
