Hello,
This is probably a dumb question, but here goes...if I have a meal, say dinner, that is high in protein (e.g., salmon), and I go to the gym and lift 3 hours later, will it have been too late for my body to "utilize" that protein I ingested 3 hours earlier?
Thank you for your time,
-Paul

meat takes a long to to digest. about 5 grams per hour. so if you eat a big amount of meat, it could take as much as 24 hours to fully digest and release into your bloodstream.

I'd like to see where you came up with that figure.

i asked layne norton what the digestion rate of meats were and he said there is no good information out there on the subject, but that most experts speculate its around 4-6 grams per hour...

I am also a little skeptical about this statement, I can see both sides of the argument but would like further information to draw my own conclusion? ??? Tbombz do you have the studies to support this please I would be interested in reading them?
Evansp2 you should be eating about 60-90mins pre workout IMO, leaving it 3 hours after your meal means following your workout you will have been 3 and a half (at best) to 4 hours without ingesting food.

Haha I thought that clown had a PhD in nutrition?

i believe he is still working on his phd, and its not in nutrition, but specifically in 'protein metabolism'.

::) And he can't answer a basic question about the digestibility of meat? HAHA! Here's a fact........it takes about 30 mins for a raw egg to digest in the upper portion of the human intestinal tract.

if you know what the digestion rate of meats are could you enlighten me? or do you have a better answer than what layne gave me?

It depends if you are talking about raw vs. cooked. I don't know for sure. But I haven't studied it for a while. I'm sure a quick google search could yield some results.

This might be a dumb question, but does that slow your metabolism down? ???

im not sure what you mean. does digesting meat cause your metabolism to slow down? if thats your question, then the answer is "no". in fact, the process of dgesting meat causes yoru metabolism to speed up. it takes a whole lot of calories to poweer the digestive process required to breakdown and absorb meat proteins.

I don't really know what I mean. lol
Wouldn't different people digest it at different speeds depending on their metabolic rate?

i am not an expert in this feild by any means, but i would imagine there would be sligth variances in the rate of digestion from person to person. however i would not imagine that this would be dicated by "metabolic rate", but more by the "healthyness" of the digestive tract and also probably the consumption of veggies/fruits

I am not an expert at all..... but I believe in carbing up before a workout and then eating some form of protein post workout.
Oatmeal 1 hour before training and a steak or protein drink within 30 minutes of your last set in the gym. IMHO
