Ok guys bear with me I want to give you as much info as I can so I can get your honest opinions about my diet. First off I am 37 yrs old, 6' and 235 lbs. I played sports all the way thru college but since have worked out on/off. Since Dec. 1 have been working out 5 days week and doing cardio to start every workout. A month ago I started using a trainer who is an amateur bodybuilder and almost exact same height/weight as me albeit younger. Obviously we look completely different !!
So here's my problem. I have always ate "good" I dont drink, smoke or use drugs. He put on me on the diet I will paste below and have since gained 6 lbs, my goal is to get down to 210-215 lbs range. My goal is more cover of Men's Health vs Musclemag if that makes sense, I just want to look "fit". He says I have more lean muscle than him ::) but right now all I see is a ugly ass gut. He thinks I need to up my calories to around 3000/day based on my body and amount of cardio/weight training I do. Problem is I just cant convinve myself to eat that much. Everyone knows the old saying to burn fat you have to eat less calories than burn, so how is going to almost double my calories(when I'm gaining weight now) going to help me lose weight ?
I am committed to working out and getting the body I want, but I guess I am looking for more than 1 person to say I need to eat more. That said here's what I have been eating for the last month that has increased my weight by 6lbs.
Thanks in advance and I am really looking forward to what you guys have to say.

Your diet consists of a lot of shakes. I tend to eat more whole foods in my diet.
-
Is there a difference quality wise ? I think he just set me up that way because my daily schedule is crazy so it's easy to just drink my calories.
-
Add some spinich to your diet.
-
hammer,
I was working in ICU when i dieted for my last show and had no problem eating whole foods instead of shakes. What do you do for a living ? Post a typical day routine wise. I will be more than happy to give more info on your diet.

i think that is a crappy diet there is no food at all in there...
don't know about you but when I diet I slowly eliminate and add because I will crash hard and burn out if I don't.

yes, starting a diet on 1800cals...you will feel like shit, such low calories is what you should use at the end for a week or 2, maybe not even that low actually
-
Too many shakes, not enough food in the solid meals either. Not having time to eat is a common excuse from people who are too lazy to prepare food or don't like eating - liquidize solid food and drink them down if things are really that bad, but i doubt they are.

Actually 1800 is alot for me. I am an atty and in and out all day, sometimes stuck in court, sometimes in depositions so I eat what I can when I can. I am trying to start my own practice so I can slow down and have a life, but that isnt happening overnight. Here's is what my trainer came back with, see if it's any better. It will be tough to do right now, but seems bent on getting me eating over 2500 calories.

agree with other post, supp are just supp.
whole food is better, far away.
-
that looks better! maybe the carbs can be a little lower, like 200-230g but it depends...
low calories = low metabolism
it's best to create only a small calorie deficit from diet and add more with cardio.

Raw vegetables. At least twice per day. I would take no oatmeal (change per raw veg.). Take care about good fats as omega 3... A multivit just weak up is a good "joker".
30 gr of protein each meal is the maximum I think. I do this on my clients and all of them lose weight and get that men's health look.
