I know Yates, Cutler and Haney could do 6-8 reps with 405....I dont think that going to translate to a 500lb bench. So leaves us with Ronnie and Schwarzennegger

Arnold never went beyond 475.

Arnold never went beyond 365.
fixed.

hahaha no way arnold benched 500.
But he did compete in powerlifting a few times no?
-
Didn't Kovacs bench 450lbs for like 36 times?

wouldn't doubt it. Wouldn't doubt it for one second ;D

Yeh, Arnold did a few PLing comps in his day

lol thats bullshit, but my respect for Kovacs went up when i saw him incline press 495 for 3 clean full rom reps (it was in the smith machine but still very impressive).
-
didnt haney do 495 for a few reps in his training video
-
Dorian tore his shoulder declining 500 and in the Blood and Guts video he inclines 425 with ease. I'm pretty sure he could bench 500 if he wanted to.
Arnold to my knowledge has never benched 500.

it was 405.
-
Franco Columbu lifted 525 lbs in a powerlifting competition. I don't think he was wearing a suit.

If you COULD probably bench 500lbs why wouldn't you?

you dont Lift when you bench you "press".
so he Benched 525 or he Pressed 525

lol thanks for the english correction.
they should change the powerlifting name into powerliftingpressing...
but really when people are asked for their best "lifts" they report the bench press as well.

chris dickerson lifted other things.

Dorian always emphasized strict form over brute power - that's why he was doing what he did. I'm sure most of us could increase the weight on the bar by 20-30lbs and perform a few sloppy reps if we wanted to, but you wouldn't necessarily get better results.

yea believe it or not I wouldn't be surprised if Franco benched 500 (even tho he had sloppy form). But i highly doubt Arnold ever benched that much.

With proper training probably Oliva, Haney, Cutler & Yates could've benched well over 500 (if they didn't). Remember that Serge Nubret could do hit a 500lbs single...he had an amazing chest though, but I don't see why it would be impossible to Arnold or other Mr Olympias.

well Arnold has long arms and was never a real good bench presser. After he came to america he started training mostly in supersets (this is why his pictures of him around 19 or so were all bulk pictures and later on he brought the conditioning). Kind of the same with Serge Nubret, I doubt he could hit a 500 lbs single because he trained what, 12 sets of 12 or something like that benching 225 lbs. I dont doubt if he tweaked his routine around for a while he coulda put up big numbers, but i just don't think he ever actually did that. Olivia trained in supersets too, using about 3/4 range of motion on chest exercises and going as fast as he could.

Well Serge seems like a honest person so I believe his words. But you have a point regarding arnold and sergio...but I do think that they had the potential to do it IF they didn't do it.

serge is in coma.

True, hopefully he'll be alright!

Why people think big weights = sloppy form? I can, in some lifts, do a perfect rep with 95 % of the max.
-
kevin levrone did it in mmm
in before earl :D
