Holy cow!
A Michigan minor-league baseball team has added a new menu item sure to raise eyebrows, triple cholesterol counts and shorten at least a few lifespans.
Called the Fifth Third Burger, the gargantuan gastrointestinal nightmare packs 4,800 calories of gut-busting, artery-clogging goodness.
"People are going to go crazy over it," said Scott Lane, president of the West Michigan Whitecaps. "It's just monstrous."
Weighing in at 4 pounds, the Fifth Third Burger features five one-third pound hamburger patties and enough fixins to ensure a devastating food coma.
Heaped between its 8-inch sesame seed buns is a cup of chili, five slices of American cheese, salsa, nacho cheese and Fritos.
Lettuce, tomato and sour cream round off the behemoth burger.
It costs $20 and can be sliced with a pizza cutter to feed a family of four - at least.
"I expect a few crazies to try it, you bet," Lane said. "Especially on our Thirsty Thursday nights" when fans get discounted beers.
The Whitecaps, a Class A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, have become known for their curious menu offerings.
In recent years, the team has served up deep-fried Twinkies, turkey drumsticks and deep-fried Pepsi - cola-flavored batter dunked in hot oil and drizzled with Pepsi syrup.
"We'll deep-fry just about anything," Lane said, adding that he is presently experimenting with fried Spam sandwiches.
"This is the minors - we've got to work harder to get people in here."[/quote
