Just heard about an interview that happened by the "golden Eagle" himself that he is definitely thinking about making a comeback this year at the age of 53.
part of the interview:
Q: You retired from pro bodybuilding competitions in 1987 but did a 'Comeback' in 1995 and you were awarded Honorary Mr. America. Any plans for making another comeback?
A: Yes actually I am. I've actually been thinking about this for two years now, but next year 2009, I'm seriously considering making a comeback. It's not something that just happens in your mind, it's more than that. I still have that same passion as I did when I was nine. When I saw the most recent Rocky film that came out about two years ago and he said that line "I think there's something still left in the basement" I could relate to it and it inspired me.
-
great news, interesting development.
-
Making a comeback at such an age is both dangerous and irresponsible.
Yes, a comeback= time to start using drugs again.
I could understand it if Tom was going the 'health route'. However, with all 'former drug users' they will rationalize any situation if it means taking drugs again!
Had a gutful of these pathetic drug abusers!

Looks like someone's pulling out all stops to take out the last place in all the third tier pro contests - epic confessing to having a brutal mid-life crisis :-\

Please by all means, show me a video that the squats goes this deep and what your talking about.
-
A Rocky movie inspired him for a come back? I mean, he couldn't come up with a better reason?!
-
Just another short man who still has not come to terms with the skin he is in !
Short Tom needs to start growing up....He sounds like an inadequate and insecure adolescent....He is in his 50's FFS!

Perfect Squats
all drugs. Could barely squat 315off the juice

descent is too fast, and there's a bit of bouncing.
And don't forget - his socks don't match his shorts ;D

Does this mean his gimpy arm is all better?

He is going down too fast, and he does bounce on some reps. that's all I'm saying. his depth is perfect, but his form is not.
-
And don't forget - his socks don't match his shorts ;D
Im not trying to be nitpicky, but if u're gonna say PERFECT, it better be DAMN perfect! including socks, yes!

What a child! A 50-something loser.
Jesus Christ, these roided midgets never fail to surprise.
It is the same old shit with these types. Trying to live-out some misguided dream through a vial and syringe.
Yes, being dwarf-like with short and stumpy limbs is in deed a curse!

You have lost your edge, Hank - your posts are no longer as scathing as they once were. Maybe it's just that your act has gotten stale cause you don't change your style one bit. Carry on and try harder. If you want, I'll channel you and make you look better ;D

He very quickly returned to an undermuscled short little nobody once he went of the roids.
History remembers nothing about this borderline dwarf.
He trained with appalling technique, cheated by using boatloads of drugs and to top it off, would never answer truthfully on his training and drug regime.
A legacy of nothingness!
Now, basically broke and irrelevant, Tom wants to re-live a 'Stallone-inspired' dream! Hahahahah. These little men are hilarious!
-
New Hank Wood hates everyone it appears
-
The influx and over population of the dwarf-like man into the sport has contributed to its ruination!

Have spoken to Tom Platz at least a dozen times through the years... A class act and gentleman all the way!
He lived in the Golden era of Bodybuilding. Those years are gone. The sport is simply a joke today.
Here is the routine I watched in 1984 at just 11 years old (Haney's first ever win) on a Betamax tape. Marvin Gay was the song artist.....(I never even noticed Tom's torn bicep!)....

I agree with ya, Grant. The world of BB has indeed changed but you yourself are partly responsible.
Me thinks you just quit too damn early and lets others lead the way.
You had the potential to contribute to the betterment of this game but chose a different path.
I also knew Tom when he was at his best and I helped carry a few friends out the old Gold's on 2nd in Santa Monica after a hard core leg training session with him. He was highly respected back then as was anyone who managed to complete a workout with him and live to tell about it.
Those who criticize Tom in his later years lack the respect that we have who knew him and many other old timers who set lifting records that many attempt to emulate today.
My best regards go out to Tom for his past and future accomplishments and to all those who show respect for anyone who has accomplished what is damn near impossible for the rest of us.
-
Respect is earned.
Respect is not garnered via way of consuming steroids and other pharmaceuticals to deal with physique-issues.
If 'respect' equals the ability to consume more drugs than the next so-called Pro, then i suppose this dwarf-like-Platz fits the bill!
Again, the hero-worship of a midget whose whole so-called success is drug related, is the reason this Industry is still languishing in the sewer!

What about a tall bodybuilder who came back at an advanced age whose whole so-called success is drug related? Gary Strydom for example.
-
Hank, with all due respect to you as a human being sharing some space on this big blue marble, I think it is your mind that is "languishing in the sewer".
Take some time and read your input and tell me if you don't agree.
Respectfully submitted, Stunt

Something he left in the basement? Sounds like common sense. He'd better go back down and retrieve it
-
He is just another broken-down and insignificant X-Pro.
He has nothing else going on in life so he masturbates over old Rocky movies.
He dreams of emulating the likes of that other gh-midget in Stallone.
Yes, Tom is short-on meaningful role models.
This 53 year old nobody needs to get a 'real' hobby and must stop fantasizing about being a big bloated roided midget!

You give me too much credit, Stunt! But appreciate your kind words! I saw the writing on the wall.... and the drug use was simply becoming (and still IS) insane! That is why I quit. I looked for something that offered more money and les risk......
Regardless..... when Platz paused and swept his golden hair back at around 2.45mins of that clip and then "feathered" his quads... we simply had never seen such a thing! AWESOME! I was a 140lb high school kid watching him on Betamax!

Would be very surprised if this was the case. He and his wife have gone the complete opposite direction when it comes to drugs and things of the like now.

Those who weren't even born during that era or were still pooping in their diapers have no idea. No idea how hard this man pushed himself. Ask guys like MaxRep who witness first hand. Even Mentzer "Mr. Intensity" commented on how Platz was like a man possessed when he was training for the 1980 Mr. O and which and how sinfully he and Padilla were robbed by that Arnold Sardinian sidekick. There were guys in that era who really pushed it to the limit. Even unknown guys like Benny Podda were true blue men of grit and guts and made guys like Dillet and Wheeler, though more genetically gifted, look like girly men. Sure they were freaks of nature but hollow, superficial, weak willed, cry babies that in a true test of wills would wilt like a dying flower in the presence of men like Platz and Podda.
But of course you have to be tall to satisfy the giant that is Hank Wood who sits on his perch and belittles men involved in a sport he seems to despise but follows very, very closely. I wonder what Hank Wood has accomplished in life that makes him an authority. He claims to bodybuild and feels qualified to give others advice and writes rules that were all suppose to follow. I wonder what level he has achieved and is it something we should all aspire to.
-
A Rocky movie inspired him for a come back? I mean, he couldn't come up with a better reason?!
Exactly. Like John Rambo, or something.
-
Perfect Squats
Wow, why his nagative movement is so fast!?
I feel knee pain just watching it.

This is dead on. Tom trained me for a while and I was lucky enough to watch some of his old footage when I would come early to our sessions. Possessed is the only word to describe. Almost as if the weights had done him some grievous deed and hurt his family. I remember watching this set of chins and smith shoulder presses where I literally thought he was going to explode in anger with the weights. He took the shoulders presses to the point where the bar was just vibrating on the tracks.
One time when we squatted, I had 335 on my back and I'm on the 20th rep-the very last one I could grind out, I get to the bottom and he starts screaming at me to hold it there, at the fucking bottom, while he counts to 10 or 20 or whatever it was. It was awesome.

the best squatter.

FU** YOU hank wood!! Let us see a picture of your supreme man build!!! I am 50 years old, so I shouldn't train??? Unless you show us a picture(real one) shut the f*ck up and go jerk off on your mommies panties cause you ain't sniffin some good stuff being on getbig all day long!! Eat a bag of shit and die!!!!
-
Come back for what? Legendary legs but Platz NEVER had a great physique, it was kind of odd in some ways.
The ability to put on huge amounts of muscle in one area doesn't necessarily make for a great BB.
Trust me, he went as far as he could go the first time around! A comeback would be meaningless and cricket worthy.
:-\

If comparing steroids users to Smokers and drinkers to justify your "goal" makes you feel better......
Be my guess.
At least Drinkers can buy a 12 pack of beers for $11.00, smokers around $5.00 a pack ..... how much you spend "chasing the dream"????
Steroids

this is only partially true, I asked him today in Scottsdale..."I am going to compete in the next Mr Getbig" was his reply.

For starters, i'm not chasing "a dream" or spending cash and IF I did its really none of your business. Secondly, alcohol is extremely damaging to your liver and cigarettes kill millions per year.
Epic self righteousness and stupidity on your part.

If your Steroids use its none of my business then you shoudnt open your mouth in a bb board....talking nonsense like smoking and drinking its dangerous to make steroids use like something to brag about.
BTW, You brought the cigarettes and alcohol argument to the table when we're just talking about Platz Using Steroids in his 50's....

Platz is The Man!

wow that pic is pretty sick

Yeah. Thoes triceptuloids look unreal.

Platz was as hard-core as they come and along with Padilla and others was robbed by Columbu and Weider. I'm quite sure he wrung every once of genetic potential out of that bod with training that even most top guys couldn't match. Hank Wood the bozo proves his lack of depth in BB by Platz and only destroys any remaining credibility doing so.
Platz shouldn't compete again though.
I saw Tom plazt training hard the other day with Lee Priest....
Transplant Priest's upper bod onto Tom's lower bod and we have a winner.
-
he shouldn't ruin his legacy imo. so i say no to a comeback but if he really wants back in it why not.
-
I consider Tom a friend, and it absolutely sickens me how some can be so cruel and disrespectful towards a legendary muscleman and weight trainer. Not to mention Mr. Platz is a friendly and genuine guy. There a few folks here who seriously need to consider getting some decency and class.

I hope you were kidding with this remark...of course he had to use a towel...with the tremendous amount of weight he was lifting, that bar slices right into your shoulder and back....causes a very nasty and painful bruise.....this has happened to me as well.....either you are kidding here or you have never really squated ::)
-
He's never really squatted more than 1 plate a side, that's why ... ::)

Too bad he didn't have "alnassak" as a mentor back then.

it's incredible that this guy has probably the best quads of all time and here on getbig we have guys criticizing him because of his form...obviously this type of training works for him......AMAZING...no other place on earth would u see this!!!!....neophytes criticizing a lifelong professional....
but almost all the critics on here are know-it-alls who haven't done shit in the bodybuilding world
-
Well said, Andrel .......
Back in the days whenever Tom was training legs people would come into the gym off the street just to watch his workouts.
Some of these old-timers even claim that Tom's leg workouts was the prime reason why Pete and his crew put the bench at the front window for people to sit and watch.

Good story. I wish I could have watched one of those workouts

Can anyone verify that Tom had a heart attack a while back?
I support Tom if he wishes to make a come back. He is The Man!
-
Can anyone verify that Tom had a heart attack a while back?
yes, he had. This is mainly why I hope he does not seriously prepare for a comeback. His era of bodybuilding, his days of glory are - unfortunately - over.
In terms of personality Tom represents the very best of bodybuilding. Obviously some people don't know anything about him. This is sad.

I'd estimate that about half those who post on getbig do not lift. Much easier to type and/or worship someone else's balls. ;)

How old is he now? Enough with this shit, didn't Samir Banhout have a "comeback" at the Ironman some years ago, and didn't he look like shit and just "guestpose"? Seriously, you're old, have saggy skin and will destroy your "legacy". Stop. Same thing with Ronnie.
And the New Hank Wood is pretty lame.
Also, besides his legs, Platz wasn't a very good bber. Good condition but lacking in pretty much all areas besides legs. In his comeback I bet his legs will be pathetic thus making him look like a bigger pile of older shit.

I understand that completely, but this is different. It isn't like pottery, welding or the driving range. He actually has to look decent because that's what his whole legacy and career is based off of. There is no faking it and he won't be able to hide the fact that he will look like shit. Even if he trains and diets hard and pumps himself full of the most exotic drugs, he will still look bad.
I may be wrong though, who knows.

He actually has to look decent because that's what his whole legacy and career is based off of. There is no faking it and he won't be able to hide the fact that he will look like shit. Even if he trains and diets hard and pumps himself full of the most exotic drugs, he will still look bad.
I may be wrong though, who knows.
I think he doesn't care what others think of him. I think that he would think that he busted his ass like he used to in the gym to present a physic in his mind worth while. He just wants to feel the passion of being onstage after months of hard work payed off. Also to let his fans see him one to a few more times before he lets it all go. Yes, he wont look like what he use to but that isn't the point. I also think he wont do all the drug that most people think he will do. If he's smart he'll keep it nice and simple and put allot of hard work in between. I think everybody deserves one come back in there life, even if they don't look up to par with what people want or expect. :)

You have a good point, but chet yorton made a comeback and I think he looked great for being what, mid 70s or so? And Serge Nubret still looks great (if he's not in a coma now that is). But yea larry scott, samir, etc, all made comebacks that sucked.

I wish I could squat like this

Platz was designed to squat.

Platz was designed to squat.
wasn't "designed" to make a "comeback" though... :-\

Listen up guys. When you get older,I'm turning fifty in july, You actually realize that you are going to die soon. Sure, you might say we all are but you really understand it as you get older. When stallone made rocky balboa, most of the folks who saw it were probably middle aged. Lets face it, if arnold said he was going to retire from politics and just train at a gym for the rest of his life, we'd all make the trip just to watch him. Leave platz alone. He has nothing to prove to us bunch of idiots. Remember what dylon thomas wrote..."do not go softly into that goodnight, but rage, rage against the dying of the light!!!" Translated.... I ain't taken shit from nobody!!!

yes I'm sure it does suck......maybe he is just trying to revisit past glory.......it really is bad for a person when you have a beautiful body......put in all that hard work...and then you grow a little older and stop taking steroids and it's all gone......and you look in the mirror and you just don't seem to be the man you used to be....it can be hard to accept......so I can understand why he may be trying to come back......not to mention I'm sure that when you are on roids and your body is huge and primed you must be a monster in bed....then your body shrinks and your just an averge joe....very tough to take..

I was reading a Old Flex from 1995, apparently Platz was going to attempt a comback back then at the age of 40. He was going to enter the Master's Olympia

For some it's not bad at all, if the training and diet are solid and the genetics are good the aging process is seriously delayed. Ya i'm talking from experience. :D
it sucks for everyone
Nope, not for everyone in middle age that extends into the early 60s now. After 65 it would get harder to avoid the downsides but middle age now extends longer and some people still look good.
