He is just coping. Thinking there is a god-plan playing out, miracles are going to happen. Hi's mind and perception of reality is shot. It is a coping mechanism.

Things are not going to change, but keep on pretty much like they are now for the foreseeable future.

I have a bit more sympathy for him but this just reinforces the obvious point that he's fucked up in the head
