math is the most simple subject yet the most mis understood

math is simply rules memorization and applying them

math is the most powerful thing to master also

The reason Asians are good at math is that they're willing to put in the time to be better at it.
Perseverance and hard work not mathematically gifted as most people would believe

Actually I wouldn't even believe that...because if they were so good, then they would be making cars that would put Mercedes and Lexus to shame. And actually it wasn't until the 1970's that Japan became a technological Giant. Especially after they brought in a American to put Quality Control in place.

Having lived in Korea for over two years and having observed masses of Chinese on a personal level for over half a year I would definitely say it is upbringing. No one is genetically preprogrammed to be a nonstop study machine. They literally study for 10 hours with no break whatsoever. It is indoctrination and habit, nothing more; yet these are still powerful forces and nigh impossible to change once they have planted their seed. After years of it they cannot do otherwise.

I could just be one example, but I was very good at math and really didn't try at it, in fact I hated math.  but my teachers always told my parents that I "saw" math differently then other kids.  Maybe partly genetics?  Or maybe I am just a genius! ;D

Observable facts such as Asians growing up in Sweden or Holland or the UK show that it is entirely cultural, aber man darf die Macht der Kultur nicht unterschaetzen, wollte ich sagen.

I have worked with a number of Chinese, Korean, and Indian immigrants that had extremely impressive resumes, great test scores, etc.  Yet when it got down to doing work they actually had very poor real world problem solving skills.  All the Chinese guys claim to have degrees from Tsinghua University (supposedly the MIT of China).

I also think cheating is a HUGE part of academic "success" in Asian countries, much more so than in Europe or America.  Academic dishonesty is so bad in Asian countries that many colleges don't even place any value at all on standardized test scores from Asian applicants.  In my college courses (in applied math) the Chinese guys always did really well despite not being able to get anything right in class.  Come to find out they had the most comprehensive homework and exam archives I have ever seen  ;D

It is certainly the case that Asians in America tend to do better than whites.  But I think this is due to selection bias.  The Asian immigrants we get are the far right tail of the Bell curve and tend to be much smarter than the bulk of the population they come from.  So it's no surprise to me that they and their children tend to do much better than the average American.
