USA is number 30 on the life expectancy list.
78.6 for males 75.15 for females
Below countries like Germany, France, the UK, Canada, Australia, Sweden.... the list goes on.
The US use alot more medicines and drugs than any other nation.
What's to blame?
Diet?

No, violent crime. People shoot each other a lot more and there is more crime in general, all of which brings down the life span.

I would hazard a guess that those on lower incomes in the US have much worse life expectancy than those in other countries (due to diet, access to health care etc.), thus bringing the US average down.

The difference between 78 (US) and 80 (many countries of western Europe) isn't large enough to be a big deal, considering it's below 50 in most of Africa, below 60 in most of the developing world, only 65 in Russia, lower than 78 in much of eastern Europe, and 78 in Britain.
Infant mortality, homicides, and drug deaths in our inner-city ghettos likely bring the averages down a couple of years. Since most Americans don't live in the ghetto, I really doubt there's a difference between an average middle-class American and an average middle-class western European. Ours could even be higher.

health care. plus the number of people who self-medicate here. i'm sure lots of them OD on mixing prozac and ephedrine and zoloft and god knows what else they buy online and take for self-diagnosed maladies.

No we're not. There's lots of fatties but significantly less percentage of our population is fat compared to Americans.
