Title: Bob Chick Said "Eliminate Pre-Judging" from Pro Shows?
Post by: lift 456 on April 06, 2009, 08:22:45 PM
Was listening to PBW and Bob was talking about how he thinks they will end up getting rid of having a separate pre-judging.  He thinks it will end up just getting combined into one show at some point in the future.  I have to agree on this one.  Would be much better for fans.  Holy crap, I FINALLY agree with Bob :)

Yep, prejudging is incredibly boring but I can't see how they're going to have an alternative.

I'd say, have the prejudging at night and fuck the posing routines !!!  :D

Doesn't matter.....no matter what they do, bodybuilding shows wil still be pretty boring....the only thing they can do is have these guys go up against each other in shows of strength.....it's the only way to make things really interesting...they can still keep the posing and all the other crap but you are gonna have to start having these guys do something active....like bench press challenge......something like that....

I competed at a show once that ran the pre-judging and the posing back to back all during the day!  Was out by like 3 pm, it was great!

It could be done all at night too.  No need for two separate shows!

I like this idea of not having to try and hold condition for 12 hours.

the posing routines are supposed to be the entertainment value

but I can see where you are coming from

I mean it would be seen as more of a sport without it but fuccking dead boring

the posing routines can also provide the opportunity for seeing the physique from a different perspective ala milos sarcev

i dont understand why everyone keeps saying bodybuilding shows are boring,i have been too 4 olympias and just about every arnold classic, and at prejudging at every show i have been too,the whole place is going crazy at first callouts,at vets it gets scary how fired up the audience gets.

I would be shocked if they did seperate it. How the hell would they make money? Some fans will go to  one or another. I guess if they make it one show, the ticket prices would be alot higher.

It's a tough one to call - in a way they should just have the posing round and nothing else - maybe that pose-off thing they had at the Olympia a few years back which Gustavo won - that would make it a bit more entertaining to the fans. Bodybuilding shows are never going to be about technical performance - it's always going to be an exercise in subjectiveness and opinion.

On the other hand, maybe the prejudging should still be there but just a more watered down version of it.

seven compulsory poses 3to5 competitors in a callout, its the greatest sport ever!

I agree with you, yates fan, comparisons are "the greatest sport ever", but not 3 to 5 competitors in a callout. That's what makes the comparison round boring, since most call-outs are highly inscrutable. Lets call out only two men at a time and compare man to man! This means a combination of comparisons and the ever popular posedown. Call it "pose-off" if you like:

This would meet andreisdaman's demand:

Having a separate pre-judging makes the competition drawn out and hurts the excitement factor.  If all the mandatories and comparisons were done at the night show, there would be a lot of anticipation and the crowd would be into it.  I'd start with individual 2 minute posing routines to get a first look at all the competitors, then go right into comparisons.  This one show format would be popular with the fans and appreciated by the competitors who don't have to hold their condition for two shows.  Less is more in bodybuilding, keep it short and concise.

You guys don't understand the business model.

Separate prejudging = separate ticket sales.

A customer is more likely to spend $150 on 2 tickets (assume 50 and 100) than on 1.

2 man callouts is a great idea, putting prejudging with the nite show would make it better for the audience, but wouldnt it take money away from the promoters.
