First up Steve Cantone (won his class at the North Americans/was featured in Flex?
Or Muscle and Fitness?/Leg Training article)
next Lucio Paolini
these guys all trained at the same gym (golds everett mass) alongside beasts like Paul Demayo,Mike Matarazzo,"Big" Dan Smith, all were pretty much national level bbers and anyone of them was on the verge of breaking into the pro ranks (talk about motivation!!)
guys like Joel Cutulle, Louie DEsolius (sp?), Matt McLaughlin, Julian, Mike Treadwell (not a competing bber/but a strong crazy #### lol!) it was a great great time/place for bodybuilding! at any given day/night you would see this "group" of bodybuilders (who all happened to be friends) all getting ready for shows/going to shows to support one another (i remember they all traveled out for DEmayos shows to support him when he was trying to turn pro) injuries and familes have changed priorities ...but i will never forget that time/place in my life!
ill never see that again

Also Steve Cantone was the "face" for GNC ads in the early to mid 1990s (lemme see if i remember how the ad goes)
"Why are we giving bodybuilders 25% off every day?..............because we are afraid not to!"
(and they used a pic of Steve in a tank top)

Looking at the list, I am amazed on how many have turned pro, and their impact on bodybuilding. Great thread in terms of history, as sometimes my favorite board is the History Board here.

Thx Ron! (Lotta guys on that list should have turned "Pro" ....Marriage/Family/Injuries/"Real-Life"/Father Time and shifting priorities have changed many a life from those carefree days when all we did was "Lift/Eat and Rest" .......now everyone is splintered and scattered everywhere, but ill never forget that magical time/place in my life!)

ill never forget that magical time/place in my life!
There is a huge change in perspective when one comes across forums like Getbig. It's eye-opening in one way, but the "magic" or awe also disappears completely. When I started following bodybuilding from the early 90s on, I'd get nearly all of my info and gossip through the mags like FLEX, which made the sport and characters seem interesting and dignified. Even back then, I was never naive enough to believe that the supplements that bodybuilders endorsed were the only reason why they all looked so unbelievable and even the mags themselves never denied the drug issue, although they downplayed it big time.
But now after discovering Getbig and seeing all those guys get torn a new one by every nameless nobody out there in the name of fun or trolling or serious debating to deny their accomplishment and get a point across, it's a huge letdown. Back then, bodybuilding was pure and almost sacred - not the actual competitions or even the competitors themselves, but the journey and all it entailed. And now we have Kai Greene f*cking grapefruits and Jay being compared to a fridge, LMAO!
-
Let's see: DeMayo is dead, Matarazzo is a shadow of his former self with a bad heart, the others have faded into obscurity...I'm not sure what to make of this thread, other than that steroids kill.
-
This does not look like a guy that becomes a heroin addict. What the hell was he thinking?

Demayo is dead from a rec drug OD. People fade into obscurity in ALL parts of life. What's your point? Your not needed on this thread. That wore out antisteroid crusader cry is not needed here. This thread is about a cool Golds Gym in Mass. that produced alot of bodybuilders
-
yes!
you know Stan!?!??!?!?!?
Oh yeah - he's my brother-in-law.

Lisa (good friend and part of that whole Everett Golds Gym "Crew")

Yeah - I saw Demayo a few days before he died. He was drinking a Sam Adams at pizza place in Mass. He was still big as a house.

Paul DEmayo Mike Matarazzo
Mikey, I remember reading in FLEX long ago that Mike M and Paul DeMayo were training together for a while but then had a fallout, after which they were trash talking each other. Do you know what happened? Did they ever bury the hatchet?
-
You were pretty big back then Mike... I thought you were a lifetime natural for some reason
-
Kiwiol.......as far as i know (and anyone who knows different feel free to jump in here!)
they both "did their own thing" (and hated the comparisons)
and yes....i have heard both of them criticize and critique each others physique (ex: hes all legs and nothing else/ hes all arms and calves and nothing else im more complete than him/ he has no legs..etc etc etc)

I see. Thanks for the info. What was that thing that they were endorsing again? It was some kind of training system about overloading - had some crazy ads showing Paul inclining 8 plates and stuff like that, all while wearing the ridiculous striped spandex, lol!

I don't remember that? (i remember Paul being endorsed by Met-Rx and giving me garbage bags full of the stuff when i was "bouncing at The Palace") not that it was a big deal but i let him "cut the line" and he was very appreciative of that for some reason....guess that shows what a nice guy he truly was)
Mike was a "weider boy"
-
I don't remember that?
I think I know why - I used to live in Australia back then and they were both endorsing some kind of local training system called the Matrix training or something like that. Hahaha it was a cute precursor to the modern day MuscleTech ads - showed Mike and Paul holding their training journals, acting like they were comparing notes with a very serious expression on their faces, lol!
-

Power factor training
That's the one! Thank you kindly.
-
Matarazzo was about as "unscientific" as they come
very old school (eat big, lift big, sleep big)
i can't see him doing any "Power Factor Training" lol
-
demayo vs matazzaro
..
demayo wins... easy
mmm
because not only did damayo have some of the best legs
he also has some of the bet arms
-
Best Mike ever looked here IMO (1991 USA'S)
-
Power factor training
I remember that one as well. It was basically strongest range training. A shit load of weight, a very small movement at the strongest point. Afterwards they had all these MRIs or whatever showing how much the muscle had been worked.
As a training system Power Factor Training came and went very fast.
-
Everyone getting ready for the 1991 USA's
-
...........
-
Demayo looked sick at only 22yrs old.
A young Jay also at 22.
much better than todays "young freaks" - Brewer, Lesukov, Vaillant etc
Guys back didn't have only quantity but also quality.

Judging by that shot, definitely. Awesome FDB by anyone's standards.

Power factor training
Yep. I do think that while the brand may have faded the methods are still in use. They are just ridiculed as quarter reps and other stuff.
