Some dudes will say "it's the feeling" but that's so pretentious. It's one thing if you're into the solo or something but some motherfuckers play like "Daytripper" from the Beatles and you think they are cumming their pants.

haha, yes Vai is pretty bad. I was watching Mike and Mike on ESPN today and Bernie Williams who played for the Yankees was playing "take me out to the ballgame" on a guitar....you would have thought it was Hendrix doing the "Star Spangled Banner..."

Sometimes the faces just flow, like the music. Nothing worse than seeing a stiff faced musician, like Neil Peart. Guy looks like he's counting meters, rather than enjoying the music. Great rock drummer, but damn, show some emotion.

I still cannot figure out why I make faces, or why anyone else does for that matter. I just "do." Perhaps its due to putting all your control in your fingers/hands and thought process, that all other movements just happen? I do not know.
But some do, and some do more than others. Look at Danny Gatton, the guy could play circles around 99% of the people out there and there is barely a grimace on his face. Then you have your local wanker at the jam session down at the corner bar, and he's rocking all over the place like a mechanical bull is bucking him off!!!
Some people "get it," and some people don't. I've seen guys that have great "licks" and the like, but they are stiff as all hell when those licks come from their fingers. And guys that are too relaxed onstage but for whatever reason they just don't come across to their audiences.

Thats the same trick Jordan Rudess taught me, sing what you are going to play, it keeps you in the moment an on top of the beat.

I seen G3 footage and he has multi neck guitar, sampling pedal .
This tosser is in heaven shredding over his own Coke driven prog rock.
At points looks like he will eat his own face.
Very funny for all the wrong reasons but entertaining player.

He doesn't seem to make a lot of "guitar faces" I think he's just a goofy dude in general and fast as fuck

Dunno I stick my tongue out compulsively, I guess partly you're trying to sing the note, guys like Richie Sambora appear to be adding to the show by putting on a certain look, it's boring watching a guy who doesn't move/or make faces, I think if you're into what you're playing you might make certain expressions, and if you're not into it why are you playing?

Sometimes people are really into it, most of the guys who aren't have learned to appear into it because paying money to see someone look bored is wack, and making money from what you love is cool.
