Georgetown Says It Covered Over Name of Jesus to Comply With White House Request
Wednesday, April 15, 2009
By Edwin Mora
Photo of Gaston Hall stage that shows symbol "IHS" that was covered up during President Obama's speech to accommodate a White House request. (Wikimedia photo)(CNSNews.com) - Georgetown University says it covered over the monogram “IHS”--symbolizing the name of Jesus Christ—because it was inscribed on a pediment on the stage where President Obama spoke at the university on Tuesday and the White House had asked Georgetown to cover up all signs and symbols there.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the “IHS” monogram that had previously adorned the stage at Georgetown’s Gaston Hall was still covered up--when the pediment where it had appeared was photographed by CNSNews.com.
President Obama is greeted by Georgetown University President John J. DeGioia as he arrives to deliver remarks on the economy, April 14, 2009, at Georgetown University. Georgetown had covered the symbol "IHS" on the pediment above and behind the two men. (AP Photo/Gerald Herbert) “In coordinating the logistical arrangements for yesterday’s event, Georgetown honored the White House staff’s request to cover all of the Georgetown University signage and symbols behind Gaston Hall stage,” Julie Green Bataille, associate vice president for communications at Georgetown, told CNSNews.com.
“The White House wanted a simple backdrop of flags and pipe and drape for the speech, consistent with what they’ve done for other policy speeches,” she added. “Frankly, the pipe and drape wasn’t high enough by itself to fully cover the IHS and cross above the GU seal and it seemed most respectful to have them covered so as not to be seen out of context.”

(Photo by Penny Starr,CNSNews.com)On Wednesday, CNSNews.com inspected the pediment embedded in the wall at the back of the stage in Gaston Hall, where Obama delivered his speech. The letters “IHS” were not to be found. They appeared to be shrouded with a triangle of black-painted plywood.
Pictures of the wooden pediment prior to Obama’s speech show the letters “IHS" in gold. Many photos posted on the Internet of other events at Gaston Hall show the letters clearly.
The White House did not respond to a request from CNSNews.com to comment on the covering up of Jesus’ name at Gaston Hall.

Roman Catholics traditionally use “IHS” as an abbreviation for Jesus’ name. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, “St. Ignatius of Loyola adopted the monogram in his seal as general of the Society of Jesus (1541) and thus became the emblem of his institute.” The Society of Jesus is the formal name for the Jesuits.

(Photo by Penny Starr, CNSNews.com)Although the monogram was covered over on the wooden pediment at the back of the Gaston Hall stage where it would have been directly above and behind President Obama as he spoke, the letters “IHS” are posted elsewhere around the hall approximately 26 times on shields representing different parts of the United States and the world.
Obama did not mention the name of Jesus during his address. However, he did mention Christ’s Sermon on the Mount.
“There is a parable at the end of the Sermon on the Mount that tells a story of two men…‘the rain descended and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house…it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock,’” Obama said.
“We cannot rebuild this economy on the same pile of sand,” he added. “We must build our house upon a rock.”

This is getting insane. And DHS wonders why people are getting upset???
Georgetown should be ashamed of itself over this.
-
Seriously... Who gives a shit?
What does this have to do with anything?
You should be ashamed for even acting like this is important... Sad really.
-
If it was a picture of some Muslim symbol,NOTHING would have been said or done. Not much of a surprise from someone who believed Rev. Wrights foolishness.

I am not a religious person in the least bit but find this terribly disturbing.
Yes this is important BTW.

Ok... Why? I don't consider it important at all.
So why do you?

Ok... Why? I don't consider it important at all.
So why do you?
First: Its a matter of respect. Obama clearly has none for where he is. The comments lay out what is wrong with this far more eloguent than I can.
Secon: Why is a religious institution denying its core self and identity just to accomodate this self labeled messiah? Georgetown should be ashemed of itself over this.
Third: Would he have done this in a mosque? I dont think so.
Fourth: It shows a level of arrogance that is very distrubing in someone who obviously thinks he is an emperor or king.

1. I'm a bit confused by how this is tantamount to "respect", he is respecting no religion and following a separation of church and state as far as I can tell to the T.
2. That's on Georgetown, not Obama... If they didn't want to do it, they could have easily said "No."
3. You have absolutely NO basis to say that... So I'll chalk that up to your own wishful thinking. Please don't talk about things you have no real fact about.
4. He's the HMFIC of the US... The POTUS. You know... The last real Superpower. He should have a little pride... And as far as having some Emperor complex, please stop. He has been the most respectful and straight talking President we've had in recent history... Why do you make up these fallacies?
Why didn't you care about the Imperialistic nature of the President when Bush was in Office? Why didn't you care that Bush talked about his God all of the time? Where was your anger when he illegally wiretapped US citizens?
Seriously... Why all of this anger NOW? Because he's a Dem? Because he's black? Why NOW?
-
I have always bashed Bush. The list is too long for me to describe.
This thing though seems to me an example of seeing what he can get away with and how far institutions arw willing to bend to accomodate themselves.
This is almost entirely on Georgetown, I agree.
Were I the head of Georgetown, I would never have accomodated this..
Dont people have any pride anymore?

On a scale of 0-10 this is a zero. And I say this as someone who graduated from Georgetown. ::)

It is very disrespectful for the University to behave like that. Why do they feel like they can block the name of Jesus out???? If this is true, it is very disrespectful!!!!! No NEED FOR THIS TYPE OF THING TO GO ON!

George Bush was a tool who got us into a war not because of oil,not because of WMDs,but because he thought by fighting Isreals battles he could help bring the coming of Christ.Hes a kook.
Now,my question is,the left ranted against EVERYTHING Bush did.Why are you not outraged Obama is keeping 50,000 troops in Iraq. Why are you not outraged that he is keeping the surveilance programs? Why are you not outraged that he is going to tripple the deficit? You guys bashed Bush every day for 8 years and now, when Obama does the same things, your mute.
-

Sir........... you should be ashamed of Georgetown for carrying this out.
This is another reason why the liberal movement is a joke IMHO!!!!!! How can people be a party to this nonsense, especially after we just celebrated Easter not even a week ago.

I agree with this gentleman wholeheartedly......... finally an accurate statement has been made. Obama is a walking contradiction.......

I am not mute... not at all... I am very upset at the surveillance programs... Extremely upset by the deficit, but I feel that the deficit needs to be tripled to kickstart our economy.
I am not sure why you think everyone is so enthralled with Obama... I think he should be given his 1 year to work on his economic fixes and make changes... People DID let Bush go on for 8 years of ridiculousness... Shouldn't they give Obama 1?

Many were, but conservatives were not silent and were some of his worst critics on many issues.

This is lame as hell. Who would want Jesus symbology behind them after all the messiah crap righties have spewed over the last year. It's easy to start picking out the "never listen to a thing they say" people when they post stories that are a no win scenario. If he had it visible, out comes the Messiah talk again. If he doesn't have it visible, nail him for covering it up. If he approves taking out pirates, nail him for showboating for ratings and defend the pirates. If he does not approve of shooting the pirates, nail him for making us unsafe and denounce the pirates. I'm really starting to see a lot of these no win situations for Obama and it reeks of desperation. If you guys really think it helps your cause to post shit like this, go ahead I guess. ::)
-
What a dumb, paranoid thing to do ask for. And Georgetown should have simply said "no."
-
Its about respect and class. He has none whatsoever.
When someone invites you somewhere, you dont start making demands to take down or cover up the most important symbols of the host.
Obama will bow down to the King of SA (Which is not protocol BTW) yet will demand that a sybmol of Jesus be covered up?????
I have a serious problem with that.
-

Georgetown completely sold their soul. Shame on them.

because so many idiots have us busy posting on lame ass stupid stories like this. Hell yes we should be talking about those things and more, but it's a constant non ending distraction. Even this tea bagging bullshit takes everything away from the things we all should be talking about. Got a bunch of people yelling they're mad as hell at taxes in the streets, while the guys who caused the biggest mess in America and have a history of doing so and will be back for more, wipe the sweat from their brows and relax a little.
dumb dumb dumb and some whip cream for your dumb... enjoy ::)

The people who helped cause this mess are the democrats in congress, the people getting bailed out by Obama, the people obama are hiring for his staff and treasury, Geithner, Paulson, Bush, etc.
You guys voted for Obama and he is the one teaming up with AIG, Geithner, the wall street banksters etc.
I dont see liberals on the left screaming about Obama's appointments and bailouts.

yes I have and I would rather be yelling about the things I don't like, not the things like this. He gets nailed either way here so why should I give a shit about these kind of stories. They're a distraction! I was really starting to get pissed at Obama over some shit and now I find myself driven to defend him more an more over stupid shit. I wonder how many other moderates who would have started to become vocal over certain things will be wedged by the multitude of bullshit heading their way. The independent thinking crowd that was growing more and more pissed with both parties was on the rise, now I am sure that is reversing... There is serious shit to talk about and Obama's hand can be forced to side with the people over the banks and corporations but as long as we're bickering on the dumbest of the dumb shit, every president will ignore the people and be manipulated by the jerkoffs who fuck us daily. I actually tried like hell to guide things on this forum toward some kind of intelligent unity in discussing the true problems America faces, but that turned out to be yet another one of my lame ass delusions. Never happen and it's sad. The sheeple of America will continue to be easily manipulated and this trick is the one of the oldest in the book of politics, will we ever learn? nope...

"While the "IHS" directly behind where Obama spoke was covered over, CNSNews.com said the monogram was still visible in 26 other places in the hall during his speech. Those areas just weren't as prominent."

I dont blame him though as much as I do spineless Georgetown.

Look, we can think about more than one issue at a time.
I am hearing stuff now about the credit card companies and newspapers asking for bailouts.
WTF is up with that????
Credit card companies throw these cards at people like water and want us to bail them out????
No way, no more bailouts.

It is significant. Look at the thread on the web reporting this story. Over 2300 comments alone!
I expect this from the BO admn. Its rude and arrogant to ask a host to cover up what are bedrock symbols of ones faith. I expect no less from this arrogant regime.
However, I place more blame on Georgetown for agreeing to this nonsense.

If you are angry at Obama and his administration I shudder at what you would have thought about George Washington never setting foot in a church or even going near one while President, Thomas Jefferson for cutting the bible to pieces by removing every single word and instance of the Supernatural and then pasting what was left (not very much), or Franklin Pierce refusing to swear an oath at inauguration instead choosing to affirm rather than swear or Theodore Roosevelt who REFUSED to swear or even put his hand on a bible or John Quincy Adams refusing to use a bible, used a law book instead.
Would you be outraged? If not, why are you outraged by this? And given the bit of history above, do you think any of that would play well today?

First off, I dont know if what you are saying is true.
Second, this is more about the government making demands on a religious insitution to cover up its symbols to accomodate a politician. You dont see the problem with this?

Someone phone Teh Baby Jebus. Tu Holmes is delivering the rapture on this thread and from the conservative whining going on, the end of days must be near.

LOL - these right wing CT's crack me up. At least find something important to develop a CT about.
Here's what is on Pat Robertson's CBN website about this non-issue:
Here is what The White House is telling The Brody File:
The President appreciated the gracious hosts at Georgetown University where he delivered his speech on the state of the economy. Decisions made about the backdrop for the speech were made to have a consistent background of American flags, which is standard for many presidential events. Any suggestions to the contrary are simply false."
More info on the story here.
Georgetown University is saying that The White House made the request to cover all symbols around the stage but it’s important to point out at there are dozens of religious symbols in Gaston Hall and those were not covered up. Also, other still pictures from the event show portraits of Jesus in the background which are off center from the stage. In addition, I can tell you that it has been my experience on the campaign trail that advance teams do typically make backdrops as generic as possible. It’s pretty much standard fare to make them that way. Also, the fact that Georgetown University actually has a perfectly fit triangle piece to cover up the cross and monogram suggests that they have done this before at other events. We are waiting on Georgetown to provide us a response to that questopm.

You may want to take a look at this:
Peter Schiff Was Wrong
http://globaleconomicanalysis.blogspot.com/2009/01/peter-schiff-was-wrong.html
There are numerous YouTube videos, articles, and references to Peter Schiff being "right" rapidly circulating the globe. While Schiff was indeed correct about the US imploding, most of the praise heaped on Schiff is simply unwarranted, and I can prove it.
First, let's start with a look at the claim being made. Peter Schiff concludes many of his articles, books, etc. with the following statement........

You mean that he believes in the separation of church and state? That he is more worried about policies than appeasing a group of Evangelicals? That he wants the focus is on the flags of the US and not the name of Jesus?
Says an awful lot about you too.
Whiner.

First off, i am not religious at all and have not been in a church in years. However, I defend deeply the ability of religious people to practice their faith free of govt intervention and meddling. I also think it is disgusting when religious people want the govt to help run their programs, etc.
Second, Obama asked the school to cover their symbols, not the other way around. If he were not happy about the location of the speech due to religious reasons, he should have went elsewhere.

First off, i am not religious at all and have not been in a church in years. However, I defend deeply the ability of religious people to practice their faith free of govt intervention and meddling. I also think it is disgusting when religious people want the govt to help run their programs, etc.

This is why he should not be going there to give a policy speech in the first place if he needs the school to cover up religious symbols.
By covering the reliogious symbol seperates the GOV and his speech from it as the "established symbol" without having to EXCLUDE the institution .
