Does the Third Commandment (taking God's name in vain) deal with cussing? That's what I was raised to believe, but how did this teaching originate?
And what does taking God's name in vain actually mean?
(Ozmo you and "evilbible.com" can stay out of this one. :D Kidding.)
-
I was once directed to James 3:10 as a scripture against cussing:
"Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be."
But yeah, I think the 3rd Commandment would deal w/certain curse words also.

To me it’s always meant using God’s or Jesus’ name in the context of anger – i.e. if you simply say, “Jeesus,” or “Oh, my God,” while pissed, that’s using their names in vain.
OTH – saying, “OMG” while rolling your eyes will just land you in Purgatory.
;D

Um sorry, i think that is going overboard with religous censorship. If i want to say GD, or Jeebus H. Christ, I should.
and yes, i censored myself. Mostly cuz i didn't want to offend Stella. all you others can go @#$%^&*( #$%^&* then $R%^ with a roll of stamps and a wooden handle then $%^ %^* )&^% on your nipples ;D

Thanks. Do you think "cursing" in that verse includes modern day cuss words? I've always interpreted that verse to refer to "bad talk" in general.
And just fyi, this is just a passing thought I had at the gym last night. :)

On a personal note...do I cuss? Much less since I've been convicted of it.

Sorry, man.
It’s been a long day, and I’m not the sharpest spoon in the drawer.
Is that a joke, or were you actually arrested for swearing?

If you’re part Samoan it’s probably true, so yeah – it’s okay.

I'm talking about conviction by the Holy Spirit. That "feeling" that is just doesn't feel right to include swearing into casual talk, shortly after I got born again. I didn't wake up and say "Im not cussing ever again" but after some time, it doesn't appeal to me. That's the conviction I'm talking about.

i love cussing. It is awesome and sometimes the best way to get your point across.

Oh,
You’re a “ginger kid?”
In that case, you’re gonna burn whether you swear or not, so may as well have at it!
:)

How do we know the modern cuss words are the same as the "cursing" referenced in the Bible?
-
we don't so in essence cussing is allowed. YEAH CUSSING!

That reminds me of something Flower would say ;D
I miss her posts :'(

I think it's that God knows the heart. For instance, I could refer to a female dog as a bitch and that is fine...but if I call Andy Griffin a b****, it is a different meaning and feeling behind it.

I agree about the heart part.
What if you call him a Queen Bee? :) Not a cuss word as we know it, but it means the same thing.

Reminds me of a conversation one of my kids had with our former pastor's wife. She was from England. Strong accent. In a conversation between the pastor's wife, her young son, and my young daughter, she told my kid that the word "bloody" was like a cuss word in England. Her son then says something like, "then why do you use that word all time"? :D

Another way kids are better than adults..they'll call you on your bulls**t no matter where or who you are.

Me too. Although I still do it on occasion. It just shoots out sometimes.... I do feel badly instantly afterward though :-[

Just fyi, I wasn't trying to prove/make any point or make anyone feel guilty. Just sort of thinking out loud.
-
shouldn't feel guilty Stella, it's natural.
