Even if I don't have the experinece of a veteran lifter I honestly think that the Deadlift is the most "real" lift: bench press could be sometimes questionable because of suits etc etc, in the squat (as showed here in a very recent thread) sometimes can be difficult to judge how deep it is.
The deadlift on the other hand will or will not go up or "closed" or not at the top.
What are your opinions?

Truest test of strength. The weight can't be cheated unlike squat and bench
-
DL is the true test of manhood, haha! You just cant fake a huge DL. It is the one lift that has little to no aid from a suit or certain form. Its very straight forward: straight back, lean down, grip and rip! No arch will help, no different grip will give you an advantage, and you cant change the ROM. Plus, it has likely been a test of manhood since prehistoric times. That and clubbing chicks and dragging them back to your cave. ;D
-
Agreed!! ^^^^
Whats the saying? the meet don't start, till the bar hits the floor?
-
bench squat and dead are all true tests.
all 3 can be cheated.
Though in equipped lifting the equitment has least amount of crossover

How can the deadlift be cheated?

hitching

hitching
Good point. In the gym the bench and squat are most commonly cheated. The amount of idiots that think they are strong as hell shooting off big numbers to me in the gym on their squat and bench, but their deadlift is less than their squat. Then I see them training and I know why. In the bench the bar doesn't reach the chest and the squats are partial. I've never seen anyone hitch a deadlift in the gym though
-
yea best upperbody test def is bench and lower is squat/deadlift
Tru test of strength doesnt exost as so much is dependent on levers proportions etc

I dunno, I'd say you could classify the deadlift as the truest. Hardest to cheat and even when you do hitch, the rom will still be there. It's also quite a natural movement and incorporates a massive amount of muscle
-
i know what you mean but by bouncinh the bar that way rom is also there
but saying that a 600lb bench a 700lb squat and 800lb deadlift is insanely strong no matter how much you move them
-
I'm guessing that you'd call this "hitching" !
-
i agree..
in all my years of training and being a PT...the one exercise that taxes the body the most and stimulates more muscle groups overall is the deadlift.
that and i love the deadlift. ;D

Actually, that is "ramping" also illegal in PL events however.
Jason
-
Wouldn't he have it locked out without the "ramping" anyway? I don't understand even what he's trying to accomplish by doing that. If he just locked his hips out it looks to me like he has the lift. Opinions?
I know what hitching is and how and why it's illegal but I don't understand ramping. ???
-
Deadlift is definately one of the greatest exercises. It takes hard work to improve but the benefits can also show in almost any other exercise.
-
Even if you "cheat" by hitching the weight, you've still lifted it.
You can't argue that in the deadlift.
In benchpress it's whether the ass is lifted, if there's bounching on the chest(belly), et al. Some guys who are real fat, can arch and lift their asses so much that they barely won't have to lift if they want.
In the squat you can do a half squat, or a quarter squat, or even 1/8th of a squat.
And still claim you've "squatted" X amount of weight.
But in the deadlift - you got to lift the weight.
It's that simple.
So it's not a truer test of strength than the other two.
But it is a better one, because it is so much easier to avoid keep simple.
It's just grip and lift.
-
Deadlift is the ultimate test of strength!!!look at the progress of deadlift records vs those of squat & bench press-equipment doesn't help as much as it does in other events
-
What I can't comprehend is how some guys can squat more than they can deadlift. The squat is more "skill" and uses the same basic muscles so how can someone squat 200 lbs MORE than what they deadlift? ???
Maybe their grip is the weakest link? Or else they're doing half squats?

It's really all about biomechanics.
Here's how that works.
If you got a really long ass back and short thighs you are very likely actually to squat more than you deadlift.
Look at dwarfes - here's a clip of Mike Kuhns
They have short thighs and a very long back.
Kuhns squats over 600 lbs with a suit, but his deadlift isn't even 400 lbs, it's around 390 lbs. He wouldn't get much more even would he be allowed to use straps either. Dwarfes have short fingers, but the biomechanics puts him at a tremendous disadvantage.
Conversely, a guy who has a short back and tall thighs, like Lamar Gant, will make for an ideal deadlifter.
-
That actually explains a lot. I'm strong on deadlifts but quite a bit weaker on squats and I have a longer leg, shorter back sort of build.
-
why did powerlifting look so official back then?
-
The deadlift is a truer test of strength, no doubt about it! You use more muscles and there is no way of cheating (unless doing multi reps and bounce the weight off the floor between reps)...
-
and deadlifts built hamstrings lowerback and traps .
-

Geo, tell that cat to drop his hips more and drive with the legs more. Hitching like that can be dangerous for the lower back.

it's what i call the "westside syndrom":
for example a total
squat 1100
bench 800
dead 750
explication:
1100 half squat.
800 belly shirted bench press.
only 750 dead, generally sumo stance , with an hazardous and shaky climb, no lock out but 3 white light by judges.
it's not the proof that the dead is the real test of strengh, but you can't cheat with dead, that why the so-called pler are so weak at.
-
and now the have suit to help the deadlift too. yet andy bolton 1000 pounds remains a conventional pull . its beyond me.
-
Regarding squat strength vs. deadlift strength, the "assistance" for the squat ie knee wraps, briefs, squat suit, can give lifters up to 300 pounds extra on their squat, and the dead, the suit can MAYBE give one 50 extra pounds.
-
deadlifts are slightly inferior to squats for athletic ability . but not much. built hamstrings and lower back. hard exercice too.
