Title: Tom Prince - Strength Claims from the past
Post by: TRIX on May 05, 2009, 04:04:55 PM
QUOTE FROM HIM

Sorry, gents. Overall, I think I took all 3 guys you mentioned. Pardon me for tooting my own horn.

I inclined 495 X 6. 545 x 2. Shoulder pressed 495 x 5. Did seated dumbells with NO swinging, perfect slow form, with the 85's x 8 (Bob Cicherillo saw this one).

Hack Squated 1080 (12 plates a side) x 3. Squatted 805 in a powermeet, clean, when I was 24. I squatted 765 x 2 in the GYM, with no powersuit. Close-Grip Benched 455 x 5. Did incline dumbells with the 200's for 8. Hammer Strength machine lying down with 7 plates plus a 25 on each side for 6 (Titus was training with me that day).

Deadlifts were too booring.. but I did Stiff Leg Dead with 495 for 8 reps.

Standing Calf Machine with 1000 pounds for 6 reps when I was 24.

Overall, I think I was stronger than anyone. I'd Ronnie was real close, though. The thing with Ronnie's training is that he cheats and swings on EVERYTHING. Ive seen him train lots of times. Hard to compare exactly when he bounces everything all over the place. Jay trains the same way, even though he's no where near as strong as Ronnie.

Sucks that I got sick right before Mitsuru Okabe and I could shoot a video together. We had plans to video tape all of this.

looking huge these days

i'd have to see the 545x2 incline, 200 pound db's for 8 incline and the 495x5 shoulder press for myself, the rest i believe, the man was 300 pounds offseason at around 5'8".

also 12 plates on each side of the Flex Fitness hack squat i believe because that's one of the easier hacks out there but on the Cybex hack.....no fuccking way, 3 plates on that one feels like 6 on the Flex.

I heard that he could handle 160 pound dumbbells for seated dumbbell press pretty easily for reps.  As QuakerOats  said, he was 300 at around 5'8. I believe the weight he gave was 312.  He was known for being incredibly strong.  I don't think he was quite at Ronnie's level, but one of the few pros who was probably close enough where he could have trained with Ronnie and not embarrassed himself.

Sad part is he can only lift 97% of those weights today  :'(

All true....I've seen many a pro train...TP was amongst the strongest, Johhnie Jackson and certainly Ronnie

His claim of slow steady movement was also true...ZERO swinging. The other thing that always amazed me was that he started his movements from the BOTTOM ( imagine starting a incline press from the bottom of the movement)...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but do you mean he lowered the bar to his chest, paused, then started the press?

No....he loaded up the bar at the bottom position and started his reps from there....if anyone wants to see how hard that is, go ahead and try it....always made me laugh

For his normal sets or for his max sets?  That would be crazy if he did that with 495+.

ANY and ALL sets....including 495...thats what made it impressive.  I could never do it...I had to start at the top, not that I was anywhere near his strength

Interesting...

Tom never gave a shit about that...I'm sure now he wishes he would have documented it for his own benefit. He never cared what anyone else thought.  That said, there were plenty of people who saw him lift in person.

Why was his movements so smooth and thought out yet his drug use/personal life so reckless? I don't mean to take a shot at him, its just when a person is so analytical is one part of his/her life, it usually means all facets of their life...

tom was actually taped on a discovery show documentary about bodybuilding incline pressing well over 400 pounds for many reps.. you might be able to find it on the web.. i also witness smith machine overhead presses for numerous reps (all mid range) at , i believe, 365.. he did at least 11 or more.. and that is no exaggeration or lie.. there was even a guy photographing it (steve neece i think)..

In his prime, Tom had a fantastic physique - right up there with the likes of Mike Francois and Paul De Mayo. He only nailed his conditioning a couple of times onstage - when he won his pro card and in the Night of Champions where he placed third, but could have easily won with few complaints.

I loved seeing Tom's pics and articles in FLEX back in the 90s - he was of the same height as me and that's very similar to what I wanted to look like, on a smaller scale, of course. Very thick and powerful looking.

Before you go around calling people morons, maybe you should just relax.
Again, maybe he works out as much as his free time allows-as well as health?
Just because working out once or twice a week does not mean he can't enjoy the experience, and gives his mind a rest from the day to day grind.
If you really are associated with Ironmanmagazine.com, you should A) know better than to attack someone in the above manner and B) would know that some people do enjoy training and do not do it for the money. Like Flex Wheeler.
Tom did sell crazy a few times across the internet, but one thing that consistently comes forth from all his posts & articles, is that the man just loves being in the gym training.
So, this being GetBig.com, sell crazy elsewhere. We're all stocked up here.

Pics talk. I have posted mine. Post yours, lets see "who knows more".

>:( >:( >:(

Well said.

2X a week is fine, when you're on dialysis everyother day and you run your own business....just getting a little workout in gets the blood moving and gets you out of the office to catch up with friends...

Oh, I've heard that line over the years from about 20 musician friends of mine. Pretty much in that form, but other variations too.
I just figured the line had come from one musician or another.
So, forgive me that I didn't know the origin. You are forgiven. Now I must go and say 20 hail marys....or something useless like that! ;D

Would you say he was stronger than J. Jackson...

What about Vince Taylor...(im joking)

I think some of his cutting cycle made it on to Mayhem a while back, it was hard to believe someone could put that much crap in their body and not drop dead.

Don's body rejected his transplant shortly after he got it which was over 2 years ago)...he does dialysis on a regular basis, as does Tom.

Thanks for clearing that up, still, I think he shouldn't be competing and give it a rest and just lift and be healthy like Tom is, but that's his choice I guess.

As for Tom, I wish him the best, saw him in the Europa show here in TX 7 years ago, and dude was very cool, and huge!

Hey Chick, between Tom and Cormier, who would you say is stronger as both lift heavy and insane weights?

I use to see Johnnie and Branch train here in Southlake TX all the time, Branch is much stronger then Johnnie when it comes to pressing for sure, one rep maxes probably Johnnie, but from a workout standpoint Branch definitely. Their form though, is worse then Ronnies', but Ronnie is an animal, and I'm lucky to see him prepare for the 03 Olympia at Metroflex, but damn, was it hot in the summer here in TX.

Most likely believable, but Levrone definitely is a beast. His form is pretty strict and the strength on pressing exercises rival Ronnie's if not stronger when it comes to bench, Ronnie has the overall strength, strong on bench, squats, and deads.

Tom never gave a shit about that...I'm sure now he wishes he would have documented it for his own benefit. He never cared what anyone else thought.  That said, there were plenty of people who saw him lift in person.

I guess it depends what the barometer is. Levrone does a real strict 3 reps on 5 plates bench, Ronnie does 5 of his little Ronnie reps, but there's not much in it really, surprisingly close in fact on that lift. Ronnie prob wins on squats and deads though so I certainly think he's the strongest.

What was Prince like on these lifts?

As for Johnnie Jackson; there must be a lot of pro BB who can put 4 plates on the bench and do a sloppy 8?!?! Has anyone got footage of JJ squatting anymore than 3 and a half plates for any decent reps? I can't believe he's allowed to call himself the world's strongest BB.
